I'm excited. He's greenlighted many of HBO's hit shows (Game of Thrones, Westworld) and even humble about shows he gravely regretted passing on (Mad Men). I felt bad that AT&T Corporate basically kicked him out after buying HBO but good to see he's gotten a good rebound gig.

Playstation 4, Xbox One would be nice. If they want this service to ever be a success, it needs to be everywhere Netflix, Hulu, Amazon etc are.

Again, it depends on how you describe success. The goal is to enhance their ecosystem. I am not sure there are many people that have Xbox or PlayStation consoles, own Apple devices and do not have at least one TV that supports the AppleTV+ app.

I have a new Sony smart TV just before they decided to include airplay. So no, not going to spend extra money to watch another streaming service when all other services have multi-platform compatibility.

Why would I want to game on that thing? I have an Xbox One X and a full Gaming PC for that.

Xbox One app, Android TV app and Amazon Firestick app so that I can watch it on any device in my house.
?..........Admit it. U just came here to hate on any thing Apple, didn’t u. LOL, if u did any research, even a simple google search u would have known that the Apple TV app is on tones of devices, Smart TVs, Roku TV, as well as your beloved Amazon fire Stick, & TV. The only reason u mentioned the Fire TV stick in your comments below, is because u probably thought it was one of the only devices that didn’t have the Apple TV + app, LOL. Your whole comment just has angry hater written all over it. Where do people like u even come from....😒 it’s a shame really.

Ok. So they signed him. So what? That is not going to help us THIS year. Even if he started a project immediately, which he won't, odds are that nothing will be ready before end of the year.
There are 40+ movies/series/ documentaries in various stages of production. Quite a few will rollout this year even without this deal. But you have to keep filling the pipeline.

Apple continues to make all the right moves wrt content. Anyone who isn’t satisfied with the current amount of content can simply not subscribe. I don’t see why anyone should be upset with an optional purchase.

Plepler worked at HBO for 27 years before leaving in February 2019, and under his leadership, HBO had hits like "Game of Thrones" and "Big Little Lies."

I often hear these types of quotes.

So how much did this guy contribute to Game of Thrones?

Just because this guy was there... and GoT was a hit... are we just gonna assume that he can deliver similar results for Apple?

If he was responsible for greenlighting GoT... then that's certainly a high point on his resume.

But all he did was just say YES. The real magic still came from the writing, direction, cinematography, etc. It's possible that GoT could have been a hit on some other network.

He could have just gotten lucky. I also wonder how many shows he greenlit that only lasted one season?

SmartTVs are still pretty dumb TV's, their user interfaces are always laggy, ugly and have a short lifespan considering support for them is typically limited to a couple years.

A couple of years? In what universe. :) Most barely get support for a full year (read all the threads on AVS Forum with people complaining about this or that feature that was added to the current model, but no others), but other than that I agree with your points. The Roku TVs seem to be the best, and even they are pretty awful.

Just get a proper streaming device like an Nvidia Shield TV, Amazon Fire Stick 4k or at least an Apple TV.

Agree with you on the FireTV (cheap) or AppleTV (for Arcade games and other Apps). Think that the Shield is over priced and not that interesting, but now we are just getting into personal preferences (as opposed to facts like SmartTV interfaces suck). :)

My Sony is extremely fast, and I use my Xbox One X for most things anyways. It's ridiculous that Apple hasn't released an App to stream their services to these devices yet.
Does Sony want Apple TV on their platform? An Xbox app is likely at some point but I doubt it’s a very big priority.

WHOA! This is BIG!
MAN!......2 Big. With Apples deep pockets, & Plepler’s vision, this is a match made in heaven for both. They could be set to absolutely destroy any competing streaming service, accept maybe Disney +, but the others should be terrified. I would be. He’s responsible for the freakin Sopranos, & Game of Thrones, just Emagine what can be done with Apples deep pockets...this is really big.

Winners with an outstanding track record are almost always a good bet.

I wouldn’t be concerned if I were you but I understand the level of concern serious Apple fans can have about wanting only the best for Apple :)

Did this guy actually create any content? Did he write or direct anything?

Why would Netflix and Amazon be worried about Apple? Netflix has by far the most original content and Amazon has just as much unlimited resources as Apple. No one is "terrified" by Apple regarding tv and movie content.

From everything I've learned about human behavior, they won't. They will never admit they were wrong about something. If that turns out to be the case. It's a never ending argument.
It works the other day. There are plenty of usual suspects on here who blindly support any and everything Apple does and would never, ever say anything negative. That's just as annoying in my book.

Come on people - Don't spend your money on smart TV capability. It's much easier and cheaper to upgrade a streamer box then a high end TV when the next big thing comes along. The streamer boxes have a much larger installed base and much better support.

How many of you bought TVs that had embedded VCRs or DVD players? Almost nobody right. How many of you rely on your TV sound system or do you get a Receiver or Soundbar instead.

Let the TV do great video and the components do the rest.

IMO always get a dumb TV and use smart media boxes. IME the software smarts of TV suppliers are pants.

If the man is able to recognize solid pitches backed by solid creative staffs, that's a benefit and allowed him to secure those (future) hit shows for HBO rather then letting them go to a rival network.

So now as a producer, he can use his instincts and knowledge to hire skilled writers, directors, cinematographers, etc. for his projects which should statistically improve the chances of them becoming (future) hits for Apple TV+.

Yes... I understand that his ability to recognize talent is important. He obviously liked GoT's pitch and that's why he greenlit it.

But the act of greenlighting happened once... then the 300 people who actually made GoT still had to deliver a quality show, every week, for years.

You're right though... as a producer he'll be able to use his vast knowledge in a whole new capacity.

I didn't mean to sound like I was crapping on him. :)

Netflix is gonna get crushed by Apple and Amazon in the next three years. These guys can just dump cash and with Plepler Apple will start using it better. Might Start to look more like an oligopoly.

Great hire for Apple. I’ve been impressed by Apple TV+ so far and I think it has potential to be better than Netflix pretty easily in terms of original content. Netflix has the volume, but most of it is garbage.
