I am curious as to why Scott is so unpopular on this forum. If Ii didn't know better I would think he had horns, cloven hoof and a tail from reading this forum.

What's the deal? Maps excuse is lame. Gotta be something else.
Thanks
It's the typical of a mix of rumors and half-facts. People read, for yeas, about his so-called attitude and ego, then he was let go, then iOS changed dramatically. And for some reason, many people on this form mix their loyality to Apple with cheering and supporting every decision Apple does, never admitting that Apple is run by people, who make mistakes too. I am not pro Scott by any means, but I don't take anything Apple Inc does as the bible either.

This is America, we love to either love or hate people.

Maybe just this once we ought to do what Steve would have done...

Every time I read about a round peg being let go from a square hole company, I get this out and read it and think: "Now THAT firing was a big mistake."

"Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules...

"You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do."

OK, you defend too much for iOS7 and you are going to pay for it.

Look at the UI of the new control center:

View attachment 451103

Now, tell me how can I open the 'Music' app like I did in iOS 6?

Yeah.. good luck finding the control center in iOS 6..

Since when users are suppose to interact with gray-out item?

The apple approach is that list items that you cant interact with shouldn't be shown. So the highlighted search result is very good. I sometimes have a hard time finding sth. i searched for because i couldn't see where it was (highlighted).

To be fair, the control center is tricky from a UI design point. I, too, had a hard time figuring out what means on and off the first times i used it. Now i got used to it and know it.

The main theme I get from all the griping about iOS 7 is that many people on this forum want to elevate their personal preferences to the level of design doctrine, and aren't afraid to throw in some hyperbole trying to bolster that attempt.

Good luck with that.

Posted on my iPad, with a flawlessly-performing iOS 7 Safari app, while enjoying the vastly improved (IMNSDHO, of course) appearance and overall experience.

ETA: Oh, and so long as we're tossing out anecdotal evidence as though it meant anything, "every iOS 7 user I know" is very happy with it. Maybe you're just hanging out with the wrong people.

This guy needs to go back to Apple.

Ive's iOS7 fiasco is much worse than Scott's Maps fiasco.

iOS 7 is a very good OS in terms of looks and polish, in my opinion, but there are some serious bugs that are in dire need of being squashed. Hopefully 7.1 is a "fresh" update that will bring speed, much better battery and an overall stability to iOS 7.

Come back, come back!

Thanks God for this thread, I feel I'm not alone in thinking iOS6 was not that bad.

The need for texture is still needed in a GUI because we live in a textured world and we are still humans.

There are still new people that need to learn about iOS.

And there are still basic design practices that are still valid, like:
- is better to read black on white
- reading letter on top of a picture is not better than reading on white
- a font like times new roman is interpreted better by our brain

I feel that there are a lot of people who want something mode similar to iOS6 and there are also people who say that iOS7 is the best thing that ever happened and that it has no flaws.

I will love to see something in the grey area, not a copy of Windows 8 and not totally different from iOS6.

And I would definitely not make fun of Apple in a keynote and I would not fire the guy who invented the most important tech Apple has right now, iOS!

Traveling and Philanthropy aka Unemployment
I'm sure Scott signed a non-compete before taking his generous severance payment. Therefore, he was legally obligated not to pursue a job in his field. I suppose he could have slung burgers at McDonalds, but philanthropy sounds more rewarding.

Scott is more resilient than people give him credit for

I expect Scott will re-enter the Tech universe with some profound ideas. Remember even though he was responsible for skeuomorphic design at Apple, Jobs was his biggest cheerleader. I'd like to see what he makes of himself now that he has no one to answer to. A lot can happen in a year, and though he was gallivanting the third-world feel-good, he just might yet be able to inspire us the way Jobs once did. Skeuomorphism or minimalism, Scott is a lot more capable that skin deep eye candy.

iOS 8 with a toggle to switch between iOS 7 and iOS 6 look would satisfy everyone, but Apple would never allow that.

I just had a vision of flicking the silent/ringer switch and having iOS instantaneously switch to iOS 6. :D

I just don't understand why they couldn't simply give iOS 6 a new coat of paint. Keep all the buttons, just remove the gloss, tone down the texture, refresh the icons if you want... but there was no need for switching to text-only links, there was no need to rush into it, there was no need to make it all so hard for themselves... all they had to do was add a new coat of paint to the existing design, plus any additional features they wanted (like Control Center), and everyone would be satisfied.

Because it was half of iOS 7 is about refreshing the UI, and half about making a statement with it - that statement including the fact that Apple is NOT stagnating, that things are changing, that Scott has moved on and that Apple can compete with Android.

Which means, unfortunately, that some usability of the UI in iOS 7 played second-fiddle to this statement.

Sounds like he was pushed out for having a strong personality.

Methinks that had Steve been part of this new Apple he would have been axed as well.

The whole skeuomorphism thing was horrible however.

Seriously...you just made that up.

Non-competes are invalid in California. Law states you have to be able to earn a living in your chosen profession. Of course, he couldn't go to Samsung and start spilling all of Apple's secrets but he could still work in the tech industry.

I would love to see him compete with Apple. Imagine if he decided to create his own UNIX or Linux-based distro, make it stable as hell, and sell it.

Imagine if Google snapped him up to modify/improve/expand Android and it's ecosystem.

A man with his skills is incredibly valuable, regardless of his alleged personal abrasiveness.

And as a side note, it may be that I like his sense of taste as well. To me, he seems like Steve Jobs real protege, and it is Steve that I miss.

Apple now seems to be driven by external forces, reacting to what the tech community wants (loss of skeuomorphism, trendiness) , responding to attacks by making fun of itself ("can't innovate my ass; no cows were harmed in the making of this app").

The Apple many of us knew and loved is DEAD. Long live the new Apple.

For the first time, I'm looking forward to what others are bringing to the tech table, because I see that Apple's direction is not where I want to go.

So c'mon Scott. Be like Steve and show us something great again. You're now free of the box Apple's putting itself into.

Those two quotes made me cautious about updating to iOS 7. I would most likely have done the mini. There was something unsettling about top execs mocking the system that was on products sold by Apple at that time.

Glad I watched the keynote. Happily on iOS 6. Yes, I am OK with green felt and leather stitching. At least I can find the icon that represents the function I want.

Go ahead, fire away :)

A shake-up is right...

Around about that same time, Maps went down hill, and Tim issued a "sorry" statement...

Well see, but i think more is going on under the hood than just Maps, what Apple believes.

iOS7 while looking ok, looks nothing like i imaged it would..... tacky transparency everywhere.. It almost looks like they got rid of the green felt but decided to load it up with "see-though" stuff...

Customers would like that ... :p ya, now my phone looks like Windows XP, only wish allot of transparency..

I don't care what anyone says.... I reckon these new people at Apple have allot to do with it, and Apple is not telling us anything. Covering it up and saying "its Maps"

sure .... Give people MORE responsibilities.... This is why people leave, cos they can't cope..

Craig will be next to go... I'm positive.

Lets face it, he doesnt have to work ever anymore....why botter. Simply dont upgrade from iOS 6 to iOS 7.

“…traveling to various countries like Italy and South Africa…”

Let's see… Chile and Singapore are at the southern tips of continents. Maybe you'd count Yemen as the southernmost nation of the Arabian Peninsula. Sri Lanka as another country like Italy & South Africa in that India is north of it, too, at the southernmost extent of South Asia.

Should we count New Zealand vis-à-vis Australia? Panama?
