I don't want my previous votes carried over and like I say if my votes are going to be visible i'll stop voting. It works better (for me) when you don't know who's siding with you.

1. Your votes won't carry over.
2. Like I said, I expect your opinion of the system will evolve once you see it in action. You will likely use it differently. Apparently, you vote now to "side with" someone. That's not really how I expect Likes will be used.

I've seen it on other forums. It works how others have said. People group. They use it to show solidarity. (because they can see their names)

1. thanks :)

Or that's how you think other people use it, because that's how you use it. :)

I'm thinking that, since the functionality is changing, you shouldn't import old likes as it's a fundamental difference from the up vote button.

My 2¢

You can use it to show solidarity, you can use it to pick on someone. It can be used both positive and negative. The problem with anonymity is that nobody knows and thus using this system negatively (picking on someone) is rather easy. It will also hide people who just simply like to mess with the scoring (guess why nobody but me has a score of 0 ;)). In that case, what does the scoring mean? Nothing because it got sabotaged. The same for people with OSD that are turning the scoring into even/odd numbers. Just a "like" and preferably a more public "like" (we have public polls here) makes it more meaningful and might add to a discussion/troubleshooting.

However, since a lot of people on the internet can't stand other people having their own opinion I think it is very unwise to have such a system at all. It'll turn into a meaningless bashing system.

I like the current system because there are times I can see no point in me continuing to post because other posts have lots of upvotes which tells me the direction of the conversation. If people's names were attached people would see groups forming and be less likely to post when they see people in a new topic. Oh no not them again. Thats the sort of thing I've seen on other forums and they ended up removing the feature.

Time will tell. Maybe it'll work here.

I do not use the up votes to dictate whether I want to give my opinion, but rather how other responses are. If the discussion is such that I feel I can provide my opinion then I will regardless of the up votes. I think you're artificially removing yourself from discussions when you don't need to. Just my $.02

Empathy, reassurance, confidence in the 'Like' feature

You can use it to show solidarity, you can use it to pick on someone. It can be used both positive and negative. …

If a post that's liked is simply inappropriate, I can simply report the post.

Less flippantly: I do empathise, deeply and personally, with dyn's concern about the potential for abuse/misuse of the 'Like' feature (I experienced "troubles elsewhere", and upvoting of inappropriate negativity was amongst those troubles). That said …

… Time will tell. Maybe it'll work here.

… I have seen enough here, over the past five months or so, to firmly believe that the XenForo implementation of 'Like' will work for MacRumors Forums.

Just, you know, making sure...

;)

+1

I still don't know how you can put a like/up vote button without having a dislike/down vote button. A single button either way is absolutely pointless. Why should those in agreement be able to simply click a button but those who disagree must start an argument and write an entire post?

Either have a system that reflects both options or get rid of it entirely.

There are numerous closed topics about down-voting, plenty of points of reference.

I responded in one of the open topics: https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=20515135#post20515135

Mods deleted my post in that thread so I'll respond again here. Many threads have been written about down voting because the current single option system sucks.

Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.

[MOD NOTE]
Arn stated what he's planning on doing with the new system and how he'll not be stripping the anonymity of the voting system. With that said, we don't need to yet another thread about the positives/negatives of the current voting system.

At this stage, nothing more needs to be said.
