Does it seems odd that the insults we allow are insults against the defenseless? If you are not going to allow insults like name calling of forum members, what is the benefit of allowing name calling of non forum members?
As @Doctor Q Already stated, The rules do not prohibit insults on non-members

From my perspective, I see why we have rules prohibiting insulting members, as we are a community discussing a common interest, insulting another member will degrade the open discussion, derail a thread, and cause people to refrain from expressing their opinions, i.e., will be openly mocked.

At the risk if misrepresenting what Doctor Q stated, a similar chilling affect on open discourse could result if we restrict members from openly expressing their opinions regarding non-members.

I see your point and your argument. I believe we as a society would be much better off, if everyone was treated with respect and courtesy and perhaps such insults should not be permitted as they do contravene our idea of being respectful

I think after further reflection, its hard to be respectful, and have a constructive debate when that debate is filled with insults towards a non-member.

Rules for Appropriate Debate
Respect
Guidelines: Show respect for your fellow posters. Expect and accept that other users may have strongly held opinions that differ from yours. In other words, basic human courtesy.

Debate
Guidelines: Be willing to engage in fact-based, constructive debate. Look for ways to inform and learn from others.

Is a violation having your posts removed or a suspension or both?
We moderate based on an escalation approach.

That is, we'll issue a reminder, then if that fails to alter the behavior, we'll move on to suspensions, and if behavior is not changed we'll increase the suspensions length until we reach a point where a permaban is the last option.

As for the post remaining, or being deleted, it all depends on what is in the post, for instance, a post that only has LOL (frivolous post violation), it will be deleted, other posts that have content that is on topic may remain. It all depends

I moved all of the PRSI discussion to a new thread, so the we can remain on topic for the OP's question/concern.

That discussion can be found here: PRSI Forum discussion

What’s an example of insulting a non-forum member? A remark about Tim Cook’s...hair?

That's my guess. I can say Bill Gates is a silly pig dog and smells of elderberries, and I fart in his general direction --- but the moment I say you, Glockworkorange, ______________________ --- I get suspended or warned.

In all the times I've seen the heavy hand come down, it's been warranted because of that reason - the talk went from the topic to personal insults. It looks like even if the offending parties make up afterwards, it's still a suspendable offense, if caught or reported.

I’m not allowed to give you a personal example because of the forum rules.

Let’s say there was a story on the front page about a user on another website unearthing some information and someone on this site called that user a bad word. THAT is completely acceptable, but if I were to say that the person that called them a bad word was a bad word, THAT is NOT acceptable because they are a forum member.

Simply put, forum members are considered honored guests. As such, you cannot insult a forum guest, make a forum guest feel unwelcome, or tell a forum guest he or she has to leave the forum.
So, a forum member says something insulting about a non-firum member and then you criticize the forum member for making the insult, then you might have a problem.

Got it.
