With all the iphone posts lately (last few days), I see more and more insults to members with derogatory name calling and put downs where it is making these forums not pleasant to read through

Has everyone noticed this? I have been reporting but that of course isn't stemming the issue really. I feel that the "culture" of MR has become more immature lately and I don't know how this can change for the better. I have noticed that these cases are largely done by relatively new or not substantially active members.

Have you been reporting these types of posts?

Your face is getting unbearable! ;)

For everyone that thinks things have gone down hill since they joined, I promise there is someone that thinks things went downhill because they joined.

As said by others, the user base is forever changed. The good helpful posts have not gone away, you just have to search a little more. The forum volume is changing hand in hand with what Apple is focusing its attention on.

I've noticed the forums become extremely hostile. I'd say a good 40% of the posts I make get replies that somehow insinuate I'm making a useless post, I'm an idiot, 'your mom (blank)', etc. etc. It really makes posting here seem counter-productive sometimes.

I agree but I think the way Macrumors administers its forums are equally immature. Just read the forum rules - some, like 'chattiness', are ridiculous.

The whole thing of time-out and banning users at the drop of a hat (where the users can then simply re-join anyway) is childish and pointless.

I think MR needs to adopt more of a congratulatory culture. Give users the option of 'thanking' other users for their help and ensure that the longer one is a member and the more one is thanked, the more access/privileges the user gets.

Rewarding good behaviour is just as important.

Says the banned guy, lol.

But I think this is a good idea, why not add a karma system? I know most people wouldnt care but it cant hurt.

Your mom.

I've pretty much stayed away from the iPhone forums, and my sanity has remained intact.

Mods,

What is the policy regarding abusive and insulting posts directed towards forum members? Do members posting abusive or insulting things about another forum member get a free pass if that member is featured in a front page news item? I'm thinking of Justin Wagoner.

I was asking more what the MR policy regarding the situation with Justin's case, as he is an active member of this forum who just happens to have what he is doing getting on the front page. Does him being on the front page exempt him from forum rules when others insult or belittle him?

But thanks for the tip. /s

No, all forum rules apply. If you are really asking if the attention he's getting exempts others from the forum rules, the answer is still no. However, we have to use common sense when a forum user is engaged in a very public activity. Negative comments about "public figures" (e.g., Steve Jobs, Mac columnists, industry analysis, etc.) are permitted under the rules while direct personal insults against forum members are against the rules. He joined as a member yesterday, putting him in both categories. It's of course up to him whether to roll with the punches or report posts he thinks are inappropriate, as can other users.

Because people will negatively rate posters because they disagree with their opinion, not because they're actually trolling.

Under such a system, I'd have an extremely low rating because I make posts supporting Android over iOS, and I make perfectly valid points and am not trolling, but I would get dinged because people don't like my opinion. Such a moderation system itself would require moderation, doubling the mods' work since they'll have to remove those bogus ratings.

Maybe this little guy should be banned for some time: ---> <---

While it is indeed amazing how much disdain it conveys in so few pixels, I believe it does more harm than good to the community.

Hmm, I tend to think that people who allow themselves be so affected by a smiley probably do more harm than good to a community and perhaps to themselves.

I think he looks quite cute. It doesn't have the same level of arrogant cynicism that  has.

Damn. (must try harder...) How about this?

Though I use the  smiley in a more self-depreciating way and to express frustration at situations more than directly at people. So I like the little blue smiley of controversy.

Another is the lack of comprehension. That's been challenging.

2 seconds ............ just TWO seconds ....... of thought put into reading a post before responding would make things sooooo much easier.

Straight To Voicemail Feature?

Will the iPhone 4 incorporate this feature into their new handset??? I notice the droids have this feature, and with my circumstances and lifestyle this feature sure could come in handy for unwanted attention...

That's not a true 'straight-to-voicemail' feature.

A better idea would be to force people to pass an IQ test and score higher than a grapefruit before being allowed to post.

... now look at this:
