Personally I don't want to close my eyes and rub the bears fur, I'm liable to grab something that would get me in trouble either way.

The forums are getting unbearable because certain people are complaining about smileys.

What is the big deal.

I'm not complaining about smilies. I was trying to make a helpful suggestion because other people were complaining that these "forums are getting unbearable". :)rolleyes:)

The smileys are not the reason the forums have gone to ****, the people using the forums are the reason. The ratio of idiot posts has over taken the smart posts. This has nothing to do with the  smile.

This can be put down to "product release syndrome". It'll be fine in a couple of weeks. It's just been happening more than usual recently with Arrandale (both the user and the thread), then iPad, then iPhone.

It has been slowly getting worse for 4 years since the original iPhone was released.

It was a different friendlier forum pre iPhone existence.

The decline of the forums, IMO, has been an influx of kids. Has been happening since the iPhone was first released.

Is it possible this is some sort of fallacy of nostalgia? I find that people always seem to look back more favourably on history than it actually was.

Um, I meant that in a way that it is like the drivers license in a way that you have to pass the test before you can drive.
Arn won't do that because he doesn't want to limit who can post here.

Nostalgia is one thing, trying to wade through nonsense posts is another. We all understand that the forums will never be what they once were but we still should have the ability to enjoy ourselves here.

... now look at this:

Feel the difference?

Nope.

Which is wrong IMO. It should be quality over quantity. If I were running a forum, I'd rather have fewer, quality posts than many more posts by people whose IQ is lower than their shoe size. Look at sites like 4Chan. Yeah, they have a ****ton of posts, but the place is the biggest cesspool on the internet.

It may be, but I came here in 2008 (not long ago, and not because of an iPhone) and was regularly visiting and posting at AppleInsider, which was slow and "niece", like a small town or some village. When I came here, the tone was much rougher and the posts short like ten words or so.

Now, when I visit AI, the tone has definitely changed as many trolls have plagued that forum and long time posters seem to be posting less and less.

I haven't been here long enough to see such change, but the iPhone and iPad and the Intel Macs have brought a much larger crowd to the table, and many seem to be just impolite.
I can see it sometimes on my reaction, as I'm quite sarcastic in some of my replies, due to some of the ignorance spouted in many posts. I have to restrain myself from posting often. Very often.

But nevertheless, I agree with your second point, as the pasts seems to have always been better than the now, especially in communication skills and methods.

A better idea would be to force people to pass an IQ test and score higher than a grapefruit before being allowed to post.

Exactly. The forums would be decimated.

You're affected way too much by a sarcasm smiley. It's the words that should bother you, not the smiley. Besides, when you are being sarcastic, it's one way to let people know.

You've missed the point of what's wrong.

Exactly. I've never understood why certain members haven't been banned long ago. Also, the new ones that come on here and immediately start their crap, TO them, and then ban them when they start again.

If anything, make them click on an agree button that they read what a post title should be!!! However, a test would be better, but I doubt they'd ever do it. I wonder if they'd have a problem implementing that for members who get TO's though?

They can click an agree button, doesn't mean they read it or agree with it. It's like the 50 page long EULAs no one ever reads when they install software. You have to have a quiz on it to force them to read it (although I don't want to give software companies any ideas, imagine a test over an EULA before you can install ;))

No, this wouldn't be like a EULA. I envision one in BIG letters saying write a proper title and don't say HELP!, etc. Pretty much what it says right next to the title in making a thread. (I know, they don't read that either, but it is small print, so maybe they overlook it) Click "I read this."

How about only allowing people to use https://www.macrumors.com/trolls until their worth is accessed high enough to be in the real forums?

Better yet, https://www.macrumors.com/trolls
