Well, if I ever find a lost one, this'll be good. Got notified that my engraved AirTag finally shipped today, coming from Kunshan, China. It's currently in Shanghai.

Well I don't know about you but for things like keys, wallet, backpack, suitcase I just have something with my telephone number or email on it. That works just as well with an honest person finding them
I find the idea of a 'lost mode' a little bit ridiculous.
Maybe airtags need their own airtags to find them when they are lost?

Airtag meet hammer time.
Nah, now you're destroying someone else's stuff.

Just go in to /Settings/Find My/Find My iPhone and turn off Find My network. Highly annoying although not unexpected that Apple opts you into that by default.

I have a pTouch label on the bottom of my MBP with my contact information, and my contact information appears on the login screen. I have a business card inside my iPhone case and when I travel I put my contact information in the phone wallpaper.

The honest person is going to return your stuff, so make it easy for them. The dishonest person it doesn't matter what you wrap around it, you're not getting it back.

I assumed that when you put an AirTag into 'Lost Mode' it would notify any nearby iPhones that it's nearby & lost, but this isn't the case.

They have to actually *see* the AirTag and then use their NFC reader to get the details. The only thing 'Lost Mode' appears to do is allow you to display a phone number (the message thing doesn't work for me) for the person who does scan it.

So it makes no sense whatsoever to hide an AirTag if you expect someone to help get it back to you. They need to be able to see it so they can scan it.
"if it's been separated for a period of time from its owner then it will make a sound to alert anyone nearby."
This feature might do the trick if it's not immediately visible.

It's invasive technology, used to spy on and commit other crimes, so any Airtag owner can assume I will destroy their found airtag, including any attached item, if any. For others, I also recommend destroying the found airtags - remove the battery, out of concern for the environment. Stop using that ****.

Why would anybody

Maybe I am aware? Maybe I hate Apple because I know what an invasive and leaky system it is? Offers privacy and collects all possible data about the user? Due to the fact that the system is not open, we do not even know how it harms users. Invasiveness is therefore not justified. All the main politicians, lawyers, prosecutors, journalists attacked with Pegasus in Poland used the iPhone;) The system is as leaky as Swiss cheese. Moreover, it is
costly expensive, because everything has to be repaired by an expensive service. Apple does not allow you to replace any parts yourself. Users are naive. Also listen to the specialists on YT if you dare.

I seem to be right. Are you the conspiracy theorist in the videos?

but they claim not including a charger saves trash. yet if you dont have the charger, one has to buy one with additional packaging. its all about revenue. they dont give 2 ?'s about trash
Unless it's a new Apple user, regular Apple users have chargers from the past. Often lots of chargers from the past.

Also know that if, for whatever reason, your Airtags get orphaned from your account the Apple support people cannot reconnect them.

I ran into this when am iPhone died and needed replacement. You'd think the swap would be seamless... it's not. The Airtags didn't transfer and no longer show up as Items in the Find My app.

That and the iCloud website doesn't even show Items AT ALL.

No idea how the transfer botched it, but that's where they got lost.

I did manage to find one of them (it's battery was dead) and succeeded in reconnecting it back to the apple account

So now I have about a dozen (or more?) Airtags hidden away in various places that I'll have to manually find and reconnect. Sure, I'd have to lay hands on them again if/when their batteries die, but at least I'd have a list of them in the Find My app to go on as a reference. Now I just have to guess which things might have had an Airtag placed in them. Linings in luggage, hidden spots in bikes, scooters, etc.

I escalated the call with Apple support and they confirmed they can't get the Airtags reconnected.

Which is odd, especially since when I tried the reconnecting process using a different Apple account said it could not because the Airtag already belonged to another account (the original account). Apple's database clearly still knows about the Airtags, and which account owns them, but support seems to have no way to reconcile it so the Find My app can see them again from the proper account.
