I bought mine on Amazon UK. I guess it may have been opened before..or something unusual happened at the factory. The phone seems to have no problems so far...

If the phone was sold by Amazon directly I think you're ok (probably a factory inconsistency). If the phone was sold by one of the numerous 3rd party vendors on Amazon I'd definitely be worried it was repackaged.

I remember when I went to replace my iPhone 3GS couple of years ago. I had bought it Sim Free from Apple. When I opened it the mainboard plate was covered in fingerprints, was rather shocked I thought the factory workers would of worn gloves.

Who said the phone was used?
He found a fingerprint on the cable and a spec of dirt on the EarPods.
Certainly increases the possibility that something other than normal might have been going on there. Again, most likely nothing major or even moderate, but still perhaps something more than nothing which might make a difference to some.

To each their own. Dirt and fingerprints in an expensive electronic device I would question. Especially the dirt

He bought it from amazon, they wouldn't have the means to shrink wrap it like apple do.

It was probably a factory worker in china.

You would return food that costs $0.59 had a fingerprint and dirt in it no questions asked. A device that costs $800...meh

Guess what? He's not going to eat the phone. It's a device that will get hundreds of fingerprints every day.
All he has to do is wipe it with something and fingerprint is gone.
But please continue, you make perfect sense...

No need for snarkyness, this is a discussion. You may feel like it is no big deal, OP feels differently. And after seeing the different viewpoints in this thread, I agree. A new iphone, should come in pristine condition. You bought a premium device and paid premium device prices. Dirt is not premium.

A fingerprint on a brand new device doesn't make it not in "pristine" condition.
If it has scratches, scrapes, chips of other cosmetic or functional issues then it's a problem. Hes taking about a fingerprint on the USB cable.
I'm done responding to this nonsense any more.
Just go back and tell them to replace it then since you found a fingerprint.
See how crazy they will all think you are.

The definition of pristine would likely disagree.

Ultimately, to each his/her own--everyone expects what they expect from them money they spend on something.

I wouldn't really be concerned if I knew for sure that the fingerprint was from the factory. It's not supposed to happen but it does not affect the phone. It's the possibility of it being a used phone that bothers me.

I feel like this question is being too picky....are smartphones that big of a deal? what about when you buy a car that costs 15-100x more than a smartphone....guess what...everyones touched it....do you question it?

I mean if it works great and has 0 issues, why are you concerned enough to even question it?

It appears as the smartphone adoption rate increases....so do people's OCD levels...

When I buy a new car I expect pristine condition. You know people sit in the car, start the engine, but the car should be free from dings, dirt and visible defects.

Electronic devices are manufactured in special environments. I don't expect any electronic device I buy to come in contact with dirt of any form.

Return it , it isn't a new one !
Every one I know bought an iPhone , iPad or iPod ... Didn't find any finger prints on the USB , headphones or any thing !

I would probably wonder where the dirt and fingerprint came from but I wouldn't drive to the apple store to return it for that. Seems like a lot of work. All the parts still have a warranty and if the phone looks good and unused then I wouldn't stress.

Finger print on the plastic that wraps the cord on my charger when I took my phone out of the heat shrinked box.

Should I take it back? Conspiracy by the govnt? Did the NSA grab my phone in transit and bug it? OMG!!!!!

Seriously dude. Its a freaking fingerprint. Is China known to have great examples of manufacturing process all the sudden and I missed out on that memo?

Wow. Dude it's not the fingerprint it's the dirt. You bought a premium product and expect the white glove treatment.

OK, so a tiny spec of dirt on an ear pod as the op stated and a piece of dirt on a USB cable?
This is not world ending to where I would return the phone.

Again, they are manufactured in China. Does everyone expect only the Elite chinese citizens to work on Apple products? Has anyone ever known the Chinese manufacturing process to be consistent by any means or reliable?

If they were we would not have seen as many scuffed phones out of the box as we did last year. My advice to the OP is be happy it was a spec of dirt and not scuffs all over it like most on here got with their slate IP5's
