What is the better thing to do to make it harder for them. To wipe or not ?

I think it's up to you, my opinion is it's safer to wipe because they will need to enter iCloud password to use the phone after it's wipe, and if they use a service to unlock the iCloud, then at least your data is gone.

I appreciate the help

On Android there is an app called Cerberus where you can remotely take photo/video/recording and other scary things, unfortunately iPhone don't have that.

It would be pretty cool if you could turn on the camera to see and speak to the character that has your phone. :)

Just don't remove it from your iCloud account. If you remove it, then it won't be locked to an account anymore.

I tried remote wiping on my device and here's what I found.

If you remote wipe, the device is 'activation locked' and you will need to enter your email and password to activate and use it. However you will no longer be able to track your phone. So once you wipe it you pretty much given up the phone as lost.

The activation lock is turned off if you remove your device from iCloud's Find my Phone. This will enable the thief to use your phone.

If you manually do "Erase All Content and Settings" on the phone itself, it will automatically log you out of iCloud. So only do this if you are selling or giving your phone away.

Most likely they took the NAND, flashed it fresh & then (this is the part I can't believe) must of ran a recovery utility to get back all the photos that had just been wiped ^^ hahaha someone must of been a bit bored no? Good for you man :)

(this is the part I can't believe)

it's funny how this is the only bit backed up without any evidence, and that 3h after turning it on they decided to email him photos (how did they get his contact details? how did they know there was useful stuff on it? that doesn't correspond with what he said was his lock screen message...)

i smell exaggeration

It is quite the story.

My guess is the person with the phone may not have known they bought a stolen phone - but that's me assuming the best about them. I don't know what I'd do in this situation as I've never had a phone stolen yet. All my photos are backed up to Amazon Cloud, OneDrive, and Google Photos so if my phone disappeared, I wouldn't miss the data on it. People not backing up their photos just astounds me... I've had coworkers with YEARS of photos on their phones have their phones crash then they freak. Why? Why??? Why when Google Photos is free?

If you don't care about the phone I'd probably just erase it from my iCloud account and let it go. At least the person who bought it got Apple and may/may not know it was stolen. I'd like to think that's what I'd do but easy for me to talk as I'm not in your situation. :p

My 6S was stolen a while ago. Fortunately it was recovered a couple of days later but it's still not a nice situation to be in. I do have my phone backed up though in case it gets stolen and it doesn't turn up again.

wait, am i lost or missing something? why didn't you try to "find my iPhone" the moment you knew it was stolen or lost? I would have never left the dealership if i knew i couldn't find my phone.

And again

The phone probably was sold to Vietnamese which brought it to his/her country.
