I've had the same Dell laptop for almost 4 years (I use it every day), my wife has had the same Dell for just over 5 years. Sounds like you either bought junk or don't take care of your computers.

It was most likely both, honestly.

I'm 19, so I was only 12-14 at the time and except for the first one (Toshiba Satellite) they were all refurbs from third-party sellers.

----------

As I write this, there is a MBP i5 for $929 on the refurb Apple site. Full warrantee, Apple Care, good as new. That's where I'd go.

I had looked at that... however the total (since apple charges Tax) is $985. I only have $970 I can spend.

You could sell a kidney, you only need one.:D

As a person who has a Grandmother who's been suffering from renal failure for a good 3 years now and has to endure dialysis 3 times a week, I don't find this comment the least bit amusing.

Especially since she's not able to get a transplant due to breathing problems.

Are you serious... If you cant sell, borrow or do something to raise 15 dollars then i dont think you'll even be able to understand how a computer works.

I smell something from the OP... Its coming out of his mouth

Perhaps if it were legal to sell kidneys there would be more available. These days you can't make the slightest joke without offending someone.

I think the OP is just looking to stir up problems... I doubt he even has a current blackbook

I'm offended that today's college students (i.e.: our supposed future) cannot grasp the concept of a sound financial decision. No wonder why credit card companies target college students.

If google has anything to say about it, you're right. Must amend my "son" comment but then again "daughter" sounds so much less stern. :D

It was the babysitting comment and the offended because my grandma that made me think so. Who knows, it could be a 50 year old fat man eating Twinkies.

And what a mighty fine definition that is. Ten years older and she probably has another definition for it, like

Without learning there's no need for her to have a laptop for school. This works out well. You all just saved the OP $970 in cash/bonds.

Funny you say that... considering no one will give me a credit card.

I live with my parents while attending community college. I have a car as old as I am due to the fact that it only cost $300. I never carry my bank card on me unless I anticipate needing it. I don't have any bills to pay (besides contributing to car insurance when I can and classes that F/A doesn't cover which come out of a different fund). To me, it is a sound financial decision because my parents take care of most, if not all of my needs. Yes, I am still a kid and I do have a lot to learn... but when it comes to money I'm usually pretty good with it.

And I am a girl...

Then sell your blackbook and use the extra cash to buy the mac you want

Did this not even cross your mind?!

Oh wow... One of those people!

Okay, wow... ya'll got me. However, I do have to ask... what the hell does the definition say? Because I can almost guarantee it was a joke between my friends and I at the time. Either that or it was during my "off" years.

Edit: Never mind... I found it. Yeah. Definitely my "off" years... and a joke between my friends and me, as well. I actually like school much better now that I can schedule when the classes are... I don't function properly before 8-9am.

Not really, esp since the display is going bad and will take a good $300+ to fix.

You're not a kid. That's the issue here. You're a sophomore in college and that should make you what? 19-20? You're not a kid at all. You're young, and that's totally okay. Heck, it is even fine living at home while in college; I sure wish I had taken that luxury myself. But a sound financial decision is not made simply because mom and dad carry you. Wouldn't you rather spend less, save some, and perhaps start looking towards a future? This is a great time to do that because you have nothing to take care of. Why would you want to blow every single penny on a silly laptop? Because it's Apple? Because it makes you feel superior? What's the real point here?

Like I said, you're going to do what you're going to do. You came here for advice and I think you were hoping for a pat on the back and accolades for your wonderful CL search capabilities. That went south fast because we're a bunch and yahoos around here and we like to hear ourselves type. Just think about it. Think about you saying you're a kid, a sophomore in college, and you rely 100% on mom and dad. I'd tell you to man up but that doesn't work here so do whatever we women do similar to manning up. ;)

I am sure there is something around your house you can sell. Hell, $15. I am not sure how much you drive but most people can save that by driving less for a week. Sell lemonade, sell a barbie, or a tooth to the tooth fairy.

You know you can sell items for spares and repairs right?!... You'll probably get over 100 for it easily!

Its like talking to a brick wall

If there is a display issue that will cost $300 to fix then fix it. That's a very good decision right there and you get to keep using your Mac.
