I noticed microsoft messenger and skype when running in the background they cause to trigger Nvidia gpu. I hope automatic switching will be addressed soon

For everyone using gfxCardStatus, I discovered that there is actually no need to have the polling interval...one of the notifications my app already received gets called when the display configuration changes (NSApplicationDidChangeScreenParametersNotification for those interested). For the sake of minimalism, I removed the extra preference and commented out the related code. Now we're at...*drumroll*...v1.3.

Awesome, you rule. Thank you!

You've got one whole point up on the other guy. :p
Is there anyway to get your app to open at startup?

Haha, sure - just throw it in your login items. System Preferences > Accounts > [your account] > Login Items tab, then just click the plus and add the app to the list. I think that's one thing he has over me...his has a menu item that does this for you. Seeing as how you only need to do it once though, and it persists after updating, I don't see it as a big deal.

Nice. Only one thing missing...
Good luck on finding a way to force it to intel I really hope u find a way.

Definitely, it's nearly top priority. I can't tell you how badly I want to use Google Chrome while on battery power...but I've resolved to using Safari until I can lock the Intel card on. If I get anything close I'll be sure to update you guys.

I've written a menulet-style application that will inform you, real-time, which GPU is currently running.

Can pick it up here:

http://gpuinfomenu.dotstrosity.net/GPUInfoMenu.zip

Currently identifies (tested) Intel/Nvidia on systems with Intel HD and Nvidia 330m. Should also gracefully detect ATI based cards and also can handle an unknown situation. Auto updating is built in, and it can toggle a run at startup.

ok really? lets make an app that already works amazingly and copy it and release it on the same thread that the first one was made. That doesnt sound like copying at all. Bitninja make a great app on the 20th of April and you make the SAME EXACT THING 4 days later! sounds like you saw a great idea and change it a little and call it a new product. Tegeril product does the same thing Bitninja does, his just looks way better than yours. thats all i have to say about this. wait no it isnt! Tegeril makes another thread acting like its a brand new thing, well its not. then later in his post, he says "well it looks like someone else made a GPU checker app!"-summed quote from Tegeril. at least say that yours was made second and his was first, and better. now thats all i have to say here.

I'm stuck on the NVidia gfx also. I've rebooted and it still won't revert back to the Intel gfx. Was working fine yesterday I think. Weird...

Same here. It just stays with NVidia regardless of what apps are open. Even if I reboot the Nvidia shows up. This would explain my disappointing battery life though.

I also just noticed that Quicktime 7, regardless of whether a video is open, also triggers the 330M. The new Quicktime (10?) does not, even when a video is playing.

cheers for the gpu app!
in terms of browsers using google chrome after 3 tabs the app showed nvidia graphics kicking in but on safari after 15 tabs still on intel hd. gchrome is faster in my opinion but if i can easily get an hour extra by using safari and intel hd :D ill use that!

Thank you! :D

Absolutely! Glad you like it. :)

No problem at all! And I agree - I'd rather use Safari than have three or so less battery life...it still uses WebKit and everything, but Chrome's JS engine (V8) is waaaay faster. Oh well. Until this is fixed (either by Apple, me, or another developer), I'll stick to Safari as well.

ShoveBox Forces NVidia GFX

I had ShoveBox installed and running in the background - it was forcing NVidia gfx and destroying my battery life. Once I killed that app - now I am running on the intel gfx for the first time.

I hope Apple exposes a method to force Intel gfx - hopefully separate settings for battery vs power adapter - 99% of the time I want intel with the battery and nvidia with the power adapter...

In case anybody cares or was wondering, DVD Player does NOT activated the 330m. Granted... that spinning drive motor will kill your battery a lot faster anyway

Almost makes you wonder if they didn't put in some special exclusion code to keep Safari on the Intel processor...but I am suspicious by nature.

Thank you for figuring that out!! I never would have guess such a minor app would cause the prob. It was driving me nuts but glad to have it solved.

Watch out for MS Office 2004

All of the Microsoft Office 2004 apps will cause the Nvidia Video to activate. Those of us that still need VBA in our Office apps use this. Thanks to Cody for his gfxCardStatus to allow me to identify this situation.
