I am not a fan of most of the media surges that are occurring, including Amazon, Facebook, Google, Disney and now Apple. But everybody getting into their very own buy it from us or see it nowhere service isn't surprising. It's making money. And since everyone is buying production companies you can't just be a distributor anymore, the way Netflix and Hulu got started. You've got to either own a huge and popular library (Disney) or start making your own content.
Don't like it? Think that everybody shouldn't set up their own production and distribution? Then don't buy into it, at all. The thinking now is that you can't make as much money splitting the profits with a production company and a distribution network as you can if you are all those things yourself. And at least initially, this seems to be correct. At some point there will be too many one or two hit wonder streaming services that still need to have SOMETHING for people to watch beyond their few hit shows and seldom watching anything else there, and people will also tire of paying 6 or 7 providers to get what they used to get from just Netflix, HBO and/or Hulu, when 90% of the shows aren't popular. But it will take time to reach those tipping points.
