Was at a friend’s house over the weekend and, for the first time, got to see and handle one of those $2k foldable Samsung phones that open to roughly the size of an iPad mini. I was super curious to see it. But man… What an epic POS. It’s stunning, actually. The screen crease is appalling. You think notch is bad?!? Seriously, I can’t believe that made it to mass production. Again, stunning. The aesthetic and build quality are just terrible. Cheap materials, cheap fabrication. I can’t believe anyone would drop $2k for that garbage. I’ll be surprised if her device makes it last a year before breaking or a piece falling off. It’s really that bad.
Blah blah blah 🙄🙄🙄

Pen included is my take away. Quit being so cheap Apple. Throw the Apple Pencil in with your high end iPad.
Yeah the fact the iPad Pro models don’t come with a pencil is, well, very Apple. In my opinion Apple will need to step up iPadOS to justify iPad Pro sales, because at a minimum, if you buy the 12.9, and you buy the pencil 2 and a case, let alone the Magic Keyboard, you are in it for $1500. I love the iPad Pro and whole Magic Keyboard/Apple Pencil 2 combo, but it’s overpriced when compared to the more functional/productive Tab S7 and now S8 line. And this coming from a long time iPad Pro user and fan. But truth is, Apple has chosen to keep the iPad Pro over powered and neutered software wise.

True, from a productivity standpoint the Samsung tab tablets are simply better. Apple really needs to do something with iOS 16 to fix these flaws on the software side. I actually use my iPad Pro far less these days since I got the fold 3 as that’s my tablet usage these days

Not only do Samsung offer the s pen with the tablets the keyboard cover is also free with pre orders

Completely agree. Apple has all the parts to make the iPad Pro truly great. Software is what is lacking. And that is insane how much better of a value proposition the Tab S8 is honestly.

I agree. I feel Apple is working towards making iPadOS great but they move so slow its almost painful.

While I'm definitley not an Apple fanboy, these new models are a little underwhelming. Given that Apple seriously lags behind some other players in 8k video, I (before this announcement) had seriously considered getting a new Samsung if and only if
1, it fixed the 8k video recording issues and
2, it upped the maximal 8k framerate from 24 to 30.

(At least) the second hasn't happened.

So I'll now wait for the iPhone 14. Hope it'll offer proper 8k at last. If not, I get the then-best 8k Android handset, independent of the manufacturer.

Samsung already have the Samsung tag + which uses ultra wide band technology. Thu didn’t talk about it at the event but it’s been out for about a year now.
Thanks for the update!
So where do they have their UWB chips? In all their phones/tablets now (at least the high end) and in their Tags?
Does their system exploit an ad hoc mesh network (like Apple's does) to work reasonably well as long as there's as adequate network of devices around the tag to propagate the info?

UWB is present in their latest flagship phones from the note 20 ultra upwards. It uses the smart things network which is built into Samsung phones. So it’s very much like the find my network. How well it works depends on how many Samsung phones are nearby where you lost your item. Then same as with the AirTags. I guess it depends on the area. Where I live it’s predominantly iPhones so an airtag would work better her for finding lost items than a Samsung tag.

The model's angsty-face and gangsta-like hand gesture is just plain silly and too much.

I long for the days when "image" and "flash" didn't matter so damn much.

Considering how many of Apple's recent blunders could be fairly blamed on a form-first design mindset, I'm loving the chunky function-first MacBook Pros more and more.

Maybe next we'll see more tech commercials featuring average Joe over-the-hill 30-something models, and less Miss In-yo-face hip chick dancing to a pulsating throwaway song nobody will hear again in 5 years.

Now pardon me while I go yell at some clouds.
And when were these glorious style-free days? Presumably before the 1920s...

Since this was a Samsung launch event, I'll just make a sideways reference...

Quality is always vendor specific. Always. Samsung phones have equivalent resale values to Apple phones, if not even more so, but I won't split hairs here.

That seems unlikely to me.

I just did a quick scan of eBay and iPhone 12 Pro seems to cost from $750 to $1000 depending on details.
Meanwhile Galaxy S21 (which I guess is essentially the same sort of level? I don't understand how Samsung branding works, or what the Ultra means in a Galaxy S21 Ultra) seems to cost from $380 to about $800.

So, when their marketing mocks Apple for having a notch, are they completely unaware that their own product development is about to add a notch? Or do they know and just not care?
I don't work for Samsung, but some of my clients are that big. Yes, in companies that size, it's common that marketing is unaware of product roadmaps beyond the next quarter or two.

I just saw MKBHD review the regular S22 and S22+, and low and behold they both now have 120 Mhz variable refresh rate screens....like I said about the S8 tabs, Apple are now playing catch up again and need to bring Pro-motion to the regular iphone 14.

Something isn’t right there even my 12 Pro Max can hit 450mbps easily
Exactly. I’m in Canada on Bell and just did a speed test on 12 mini only on mobile to Rogers. Results below.
I have gigabit internet service through Comcast and I have no Apple products that can currently benefit from those speeds. My M1 MBA and MBP barely get 400Mbps and my iPhone SX Max is about the same. My S10+ and Note 10+ show that's using WiFi 6 but see the same speeds.
Well you better check your modem and plan with your carrier. Not saying the iPhone XS (there was not xs model so probably a typo on your end). M1 MBA May not support wifi 6E but 6 quite possibly. Curious what the bandwidth differences are between all your devices for best 2/3 tests.

I would say it is very Apple-ish that you need to buy a $1200 tablet and then you need to buy a Apple Pencil for another $100.

The modem is working correctly. The only device that I have that can see the modems speed correctly is my iPad Pro, it's getting 700Mbps, everything else is below 500. It's brand new Comcast service with the latest modem they have.

In the poosite, I am glad that I can get 128GB Pixel 3XL for 150 dollars, it is depends on perspective. Resale value means nothing to me because I never sell my phone anyway.

If I want to experience some other phones, low resale value is perfect for me.
Heh. Yeah, for me that's been an advantage with Android phones. I'd get an LG G4 that came out 4 years ago for $200, and then $100. The phones lasted a good while (although I've increased my budget in the years since then).
