So, by the looks of the teardown photos, do you electro-wizards think this thing is at least sweat resistant? I plan to use the shuffle when i go jogging....

Thanks! :D

Question is, where does Apple go from here with future shuffle designs?

I guess they could remove the bu... oh wait. :D

I guess they can increase the capacity and/or decrease the price.

I use my 2nd generation iPod shuffle and it works great, but it lacks playlists. At that price, it could be worth it to upgrade, especially if I can have 20-25$ for mine.

If a user brings in a broken shuffle, it'd no longer be worth it for them to take the time to fix them. Might as well just give them a brand new one.

Um... unless you collect your sweat in a glass jar and submerge the shuffle in that jar while you jog, I think you'll be fine. :)

Hopefully, not too far. The basic design is nearly perfect. They got it right really early, IMO, and it's bad to mess with something when it isn't broken. Apple did that once, and they ended up with the 3rd gen shuffle :)

Very nice. Love looking at the inside. :)

ARN on Shuffle Chip.jpg

BTW, didn't realize that arn was involved in the Shuffle design. :p :D

I love my stainless steel 3rd gen shuffle!

yeah if i had one, and it broke, i don't think i'd waste too much time trying to fix it. i'd just buy another if i liked it

Yup, just what the world needs. Another inexpensive/high demand disposable electronic gadget with a non-removeable battery going to the landfill.:apple:

So of the two chips i guess the big one is the flash storage and the tiny tiny one on the otherside is audio decoder and controller.

So would that tiny chip tied to say an Wifi Chip would be most of what is required for 3rd party manufactures to add AirPlay Audio to a device?

Who said it has to go to Landfill all the parts have a good degree of recyclablity.
Sure repairing is hard, but that doesn't mean you can't just break it up at the end of life and recover materials.

Reliability

Is the clip on the new iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano reliable? Is it strong enough to stay on the shirt while running or lifting weights?

This clearly illustrates just how far behind energy storage technology has lagged behind advances in all other areas of technology. The circuitry that once would've required a football stadium full of vacuum tubes is now able to fit into into the size of an orange pit. Meanwhile the space required to store equal amounts of energy has progressed from like a refrigerator size object to like a shoe box sized object (I'm totally guessing those size changes btw). Battery technology has advanced in the past few decades, but at a snails pace when compared to the advances in other technologies.

Slow news day.

"Stuff inside small thing is small." :D

It is nice to know the components that make up our devices though.

Leno would love this

That headline sounds like something Jay Leno would talk about on Monday night. :p

It reminds me of one of my favorite headlines that was featured on the show:

"Kayaking is hard when the water is frozen"

:D

Why does everyone complain when they do the "Will it Blend" feature (destroying an iphone or ipod) but when they do a teardown, everyone loves it. I propose the Will it Blend company gets way more press than iFixIt.

Maybe it is because people like me actually use their tear down for instructions on upgrading or repairing components. Upgrading a MBP to have a large SSD was very simple thanks to their photos and instructions.

Will it Blend is just worthless and a destructive waste of money and hardware.

We have the technology to store (well, harvest) a lot of energy in a little space, but I believe it's called "nuclear power," and a lot of people probably don't want it on their arm. :D
