The sad story is once upon a time Apple products used to be made in the USA. It'd be great to it come back though

Come back? What about Apple's customers that don't live in the USA? Why would anyone want the price of their goods to increase just to have products made in a different country that is also not their own?

I really wish we could get back to manufacturing here. You make very valid points Full of Win, but since Apple are building certain Mac Pros in the U.S. why not bring the rest back?

Hasn't all the quality control and other issues of the last 2 years meant anything to Apple as far as their rep? (Silly question as the profits speak loudly)...in any case, until Apple redesigns the current iPhone I'll stick with my 3Gs.

I really hope this doesn't change prices of the iPhone but we'll see.

I didn't know they were doing that with some MacPros. I don't know if I would call it building; perhaps assembling would be the more accurate term here. Even if they were, the parts being build, such as the chassis, PCB, RAM and sundry parts are all fabricated oversees. As for quality, I'm not sure what effect making it in the US would have. Dell uses foreign made parts to assemble many of its desktops in the United States, and I don't think they are of higher quality than other computers.

One rule to consumer electronics. EVERY Contract Manufacturer no matter how large of an IP portfolio they have is always replaceable.

Other CM's will come in and redesign your product for you getting rid of the competition IP to have your brand on their design.

While I doubt if Apple will do that, I'm sure if Foxconn gets too bitchy they will be kicked out of bed and soon replaced by another lover.

Too Big to Fail?

When I first realized how big Foxconn is, I thought to myself "that's a powerful company". Now they're raising their prices. Maybe it's time to rethink the whole global outsourcing thing and keep these jobs right here at home. Yes, their will be price increases by doing so, but we're getting those price increases anyway.

We may not be the dominant power that we used to be...money isn't the only power. Our influence in anything we touch causes a ripple effect throughout the entire world. And that's because the US owns some of the most dominant corporation in the right sectors to make influence.

Influence is true power.

right, to pay for my already overpriced laptop only made by United Apple Workers union who drinks and smoke pot during lunch.

ives opens his newly minted liquid metal MBA smelling like a friggin bottle Colt 45 or it came with a 'special' piece of hash...left by our proud UAW worker, nice.

Wow, at least we all know where your bias is.

So Apple will simply switch manufacturers?

Or if they do raise the prices and Apple sticks with them hopefully they increase the worker's wages, and manufacture higher quality goods.

if the point is too increase their profits as stated in the report, then I don't think the worker's wages are going to increase.

Made in USA.

What they need to make is facilities that are fully automatic. No workers. Just a handful of experts over seeing things. Or have a lot less workers due to more automation.

Even if this is the direction Apple want to take.. have you any idea how long this transition period would take and the affects it would have for the company?

You are talking about building new manufacturing process to go fully automactic LOL.

Clearly you have no idea about Foxconn.

Clearly few people here have any idea what they're talking about.

Buy out Foxconn?
Turn Apple into a manufacturer?
Bring back production to the US and/or fully automate?

Jesus Christ.

I DEMAND Made in USA buy AMERICAN GRRRRRRR!!! Because Made in USA = thumbs up and screw China or anything other country that steal our jaabbbs.

Ignoring the fact quality, efficiency or even competency requirements would raise the MSRP to a whole new unacceptable level. Said truth globalization means you have to out-source in order to remain competitive. Don't place blame on the source countries rather than American corporation whom have the interest of their shareholders and their pockets. It is hard to have it both ways.. well actually next to impossible.

A price increase is appropriate.

After all, everything else we buy is subject to rising prices.

Yes inflation would be acceptable/expected. Bring manufacturing back to the USA to appease (I don't know what) would have a price increase so high there may be a revolution!

not sure what your talking about in relation to computers, all computer parts are cheaper than the equiv parts from 2005 and nearly HALF the price of 2003

hell a gaming laptop used to be $3000-$4000, now you can get a gaming laptop with a 5870 video card for $1200 (or even cheaper if you look)
