Chinese (humans) are cheaper than robots — fact.

Robots can work 24/7 with minimal downtime providing the same result consistently. Humans cannot function like this. You can typically fit more robots in a facility. Humans need more space.

It's not always about cost, but about volume production.

I said this a while ago. Sadly, a life in China isn't the same the world over. A 16 year old girl is always going to do this job cheaper in China.

If I were Emperor of the USA, I would say that if a company sells 50% of their goods in the USA, at least 50% of the goods must be manufactured in the USA. If not, 75% tariff on 100% of goods sold in the USA. Take America back!!!!!!!

Aaaaaaand 20 mins later you would be rousted from your bed in the castle and hung from a streetlamp. The world doesn't work that way anymore.

No doubt these bots were never designed to work below 0.05 mm anyway and its just a website finding a non story.

Foxconn started with Fanuc robots from Japan which were perfect! I guess they tried to do their own robots and failed miserably!

Foxconn, stick to Fanuc!

Glad to see the blurry photos of iPhone assembly back in the news. We've had way to many leaks with crystal clear pictures these last few years.

"Unfortunately, the bots are proving to have an accuracy to 0.05 mm, which is above the 0.02 mm tolerance required to assemble Apple's products."
Samsung is reported to be buying all the first generation robots !

Hard to believe robotics are cheaper than China's slave wages. Maybe the execs just now figured that out when they heard that China just bested the U.S. and is now the #1 economy on the planet.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

As long as they keep their minions from jumping out windows...

Ha... So are you volunteering to pay 75% more for gasoline? :p

Great Comment. I love these people who make these comments... right up until the "oh, crap, this will affect my life" realization hits them. Obviously no Idea how the world works and probably never even left the country to see how it does work.

Could another reason be that robots might be able to do the work faster. Not necc cheaper. Important when you are on tight deadlines from Apple.

People don't launch investigations of humans rights or work place violations for robots. That could be the reason.

Well, not yet at least.

Please tell me this comment was a joke.

NOT a joke. It would be nice to live in a country that can again manufacture goods/services we all use. It happened once upon a time... I love Apple, but they are the epitome of greed. They are a company, and I expect that, but maybe at $300bln in the bank, they can start passing us some savings. Just saying.

STop getting your information from your FB friends! American jobs left because Americans got greedy, not companies. Ask your local teamster what their wage per hour is for driving that truck, or bolting on that door. It's more than the guys developing the robots (who are also Americans).... dude wake up.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm i am excellent designer

Okay so apple needs accuracy .02mm, let me take the time to build it to .05!

WHY IT NOT WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we had given NASA half of what we ended up spending on the wars in the middle east, Americans would be building iPhones on the moon by now.

I know, because WalMart would go under if they paid union wages to all their employees. Your argument falls flat. Same with Apple. Dude, and I use that in an endearing way, what is the difference between $50bln in the bank and $100bln in the bank? It's GREED. That's the difference. Again, nothing illegal here, just a bit immoral IMO.

Maybe I'm in dreamland, but if I ran a company, I'd sleep better at night making a billion/year in profits knowing my workers were paid a great wage.

It takes a pretty sophisticated robot to match the steady fingers of a 14 year-old child

Come on :apple:Apple, let's see those robots working in the empty GT factory in Mesa, Arizona.

No, how about the energy companies take a 37.5% hit in their inflated profits, and we split the difference?

I just read that oil companies make 5 cents a gallon of gas in profits. The US government takes about 70 cents a gallon (in California. Varies by location depending on local taxes). So two questions : between those two... Who is taking an excessive amount? And do you think 5 cents a gallon is excessive? Do you think that the percentage of profit is more or less than the majority of businesses? People that make such "excessive profit" claims have never even compared profit margins as compared to other industries.

Love how so many Americans are the first to jump in with all the morals and ethics in spades when really these slave labour issues are all part of the "American way" and living the capitalist american dream. It reeks of hypocrisy that we (the rest of the world) have all come to know and love as the good 'ol US of A.
