There's good and bad to that. We don't want to be charging our phones all the time. Batteries only last so many cycles. If you're charging a lot when the phone doesn't need it (say when it's at 80%) then you're using up those cycles when it's not needed and will kill battery life in the long run.

What's needed is a charging routine that only charges when needed or when the battery gets to a certain level. Otherwise you're looking at having to replace your battery yearly or even more frequently.

There's no real way to do that though- if you use the phone, the battery discharges, and you're going to recharge it so you can use it some more. Having the phone on the charger when it's full isn't really considered an issue, no one is suggesting you wake up in the middle of the night to unplug your phone once it's full.

If the phone is full, its circuitry prevents overcharging, even allowing a slight discharge. So for the sake of argument lets say it goes from 100 to 99, 100 to 99, ten times in an hour. And for the sake of argument let's say that uses 1/10th of a charge cycle. Now what happens if it "smartly" just decides not to charge the phone until it goes to 90%. Isn't that the same 1/10th of a charge cycle to reach 100%?

A charge cycle is a full discharge/recharge cycle, not the number of times you bring it to full capacity. If you discharge it 10%, 10 times and recharge it each time, that's 1 cycle.

Apple cannot wait with this release till next year September.
This must be released by spring time. If it wants to satisfy people and investors.

Do it... do it...

They'll add wireless charging and no more lightning port then.

And that's why Apple is not going to switch to USB-C on its iOS platform. eventually, all Lightning connectors will simply go away as device gain wireless charging, like the Apple TV Remote, Magic peripherals, and Apple Pen. This may be why we didn't see a Lightning port on the new MBP.

I just got my iPhone 7 that I upgraded from an iPhone 5 so I'll be sitting rather content regardless of what ever update comes in 2017.

However, if the 2017 iPhone is merely an iPhone 7S and not the fabled legendary super redesigned uber advanced iPhone 8 that many in this forum and the rumors are hoping for, I'll be laughing at everyone believing these rumors for the next year!

I'm already excited for this phone! Everything will come together around wireless and then I predict people will stop complaining about the loss of the headphone jack.

can't wait to see the cost of this one. Apple I think is getting out of my price range.

Powerful radio waves will beam out of China and charge your iPhone 24/7.

Or you can charge it in your microwave.

And drill a hole for an audio jack.

Could be a simple iOS 11 implementation. Kinda like the sleep cycle thing in iOS 10

This is not correct. A battery doesn't have to be drained to 0 and recharged to register a charge cycle. If that were true then my battery would register about 2 charge cycles in 2 years because it almost never gets to zero.

If only it were as you claim. In that magical world, as long as you never let it get to 0% charge, you'd never have a charge cycle and your battery could last forever without any ill effects.

Well if you can charge from a foot or two away, it's no longer useless.
How is being able to charge from a foot or two away any better than having a charging mat? If the phone can be charged from anywhere in a typical room then your argument would hold weight. If you have to be 12-24 inches from a charging base, you're no better off than putting the phone on a charging mat. A two foot charge radius would be, ironically, just as useless.

Please note. I'm just using your words. I don't think current wireless charging is useless.

I bet it won't be included. Tim won't push suppliers because he lefts his suppliers push him around. The guy is a complete failure.

Apple hasn't put out any impressive hardware wise since Steve left.

Why not let customers set the charge parameters? Automatically charge if phone goes below X. If you know you're going out, gaming, or doing something intensive, toggle to manual setting if needed. That doesn't seem like a complicated scenario.

So iPhone8 won't accept any wired headphones then?

No, there will always be a need to attach a wire. It will just be a magnetic inductive connection, like the smart connector, instead of an actual port.
