Amazon has reduced the price of the Kindle to $259. If Apple can produce a full-color reader and media device that doesn't cause eyestrain and is priced in competitive range with the Kindle, allowing for a larger screen and color, it may kill the Kindle. The question for readers will be can Apple provide as much content as Amazon.

If I had to guess, the tablet would be at least double the price of the kindle. An iPod touch costs the same as a kindle, theres no way a more full featured 10 whatever inch display tablet is going to cost $259.

Amazon makes its money on the sales of the books and I will bet Apple can gather enough support to have a good amount of distributed digital media behind this device, just look at what iTunes already has available.

Oh and how many rumors are we going to get about screen size and print media before we start hearing the parts that are actually interesting...

If some sort of reader device is really all it's going to be, no matter how fantastic it does that job, I have to say I won't get it. Those who really enjoy reading would love something like this from Apple though. This is where we wanted the future to go for the past 10 yrs. I guess. I could see people subscribing and downloading all types of books, magazines etc . . Not for me if that's what it does though. I'm still hoping for a lot more than that but . . oh well. If that's what it turns out to be, I promise there will be no more tablet rumors out of me ever again lol. I'm laughing, but so serious.

It's not like the guy can't be wrong, devious, change his mind, or lying.

He probably thought at one time that the Kindle would fail.
Well if you believe that…

Seriously Jobs made that comment in January 2008.
Of course Apple were hard at work (while he was speaking bullcrap) on their own tablet.

And yes, my vote is for devious.

I heard it was 52 inches and you rub your whole body against it and it vibrates

Wish is could pre-order.

Not needing to find your laptop to surf the web? Having one of these conveniently placed in your living room will mean you're always accessible.

Not good enough for me and I'm sure others. I use my laptop 95% of the time on the couch as it is.

It's not very hard to "find".

He'll say:

"No one reads anymore because the reading experience is terrible. Reading on the computer is not the same as reading a book you can hold in your hands, but a book can't provide dynamic and varied content you can get from a computer. Now we have a reason for people to read again. And it will fundamentally redefine print media: the Apple iRead. Isn't it cool?"

from http://www.fargonebooks.com/leary.html

"I don't think the novel, just as letters mass-produced in printing presses is the real way to communicate now. Anyone who writes a book now, half of it should be a videoed, multimedia book." - Tim Leary

Yeah, steve is going to have to work for his money in order to sell one of these to me... ;)

But exactly how much would you pay for that...you could just simply buy a CrunchPad for like $200 if that's really what you want.

So far I haven't heard anything about this tablet that isn't a duplicate feature of either my laptop or my iPod Touch.

redefine print...

I'm all for this tablet thing (probably), but there's not going to be a 'printing revolution' when this thing comes out (ie: interactive charts and stuff built into the text). Publishers already have a means of pushing this type of stuff to the consumer. It's called a web browser

Does this mean that Steve Jobs has finally gave the product the green light?

Oh and btw, it will be called iBook.

There are some great features that could be built into the 'Reader'. Think about it.

I read a very popular book on my computer, that mentioned many famous paintings. I searched and found the paintings and was able to look at them while reading. Now, if they built links into the text for such things, that would be amazing (but maybe just to me.)

Yawn.

I hope this thing comes out so we can stop talking about it.

I want to hear about more powerful laptops! I'm due for a notebook refresh!

I'm sure this thing is going to pwn anything else in the market though.

What's that noise?

What's that noise? Jeff Bezos and the Amazon board of directors pooping their pants simultaneously.
