Also, what is the benefit of carrying around this tablet AND an iPhone?

Size of screen. Can anyone honestly say they enjoy browsing the web and watching videos on the small screen of the iPhone? I know I don't. I do it, but it's because that's all I have. But I would much rather have a larger screen.

If it costs more than $499, it won't matter who makes it.

Thanks for that insight Mr. Balmer. Trust me, if this device is more than and different from a mega-iPhone it will have a market at $799-899. It may not be the biggest thing since the iPod, but it has plenty of potential with the Apple brain trust behind it. Remember the original iPod, the one with 5GB of storage and no iTunes as a selling point was $399 and plenty of Apple FanBoys mocked it. Good thing they were not on Apple's management team, eh.

You know the drill - High price to early adopters, followed by new model w/ steep price cut. Plus if Apple pawns off a subsidized model to Verizon or ATT it could be a stampede out of the gate. Don't give short shift to a tablet just because M$ failed. M$ is the WORST marketer of all time because they have big biz boxed in with Win and Office giving them a lifetime supply of profit which Apple doesn't have backing it up.

I would say $499 would be about right (assuming it is an e-reader/media device), which means that Apple will charge $699--and I'll buy it anyway!! ;-)

Depends on its features...but that's still a lot of money for a third electronic device that basically is just duplicating features I have already invested in on other hardware.

Seems as though the tablet is just a big magazine reader in the eyes of Apple. This is just an accessory to a new part of iTunes Magazine Section in the making.

Sure but the times I use my iPhone to browse are the times I don't or wouldn't have any other device around -- while shopping, on the subway for a short trip, waiting to board a plane, waiting in line at the grocery store. So in that aspect a tablet doesn't solve anything. Where a tablet works is when I get on the plane or longer train trip, or maybe want to sit outside, or read in bed; basically anyplace I have a laptop to do basic tasks, but don't need the power, heft, noise of a laptop.

If it runs the same os as the iPhone, then I would consider it to replace my iphone with this device and a bluetooth ear piece. But I would consider the device if the price was similar to the iPhone price plus maybe 100.

At prices like 800+ I would expect the OS to be full OSX with multitouch added and full functionality along the lines of a MacBook Air.

Not paying 800+ for a color Kindle that connects to iTunes.

SSD HDD = Silent Laptop.

My 128GB SSD and my Unibody MBP are silent.

So basically you want them to take a MacBook Air, add a full multi-touch screen, make the enclosure smaller, and then sell it for half the price?

I mean, yes, it's probably going to be smaller than the MBA, but how much smaller and underpowered and underspec'd is it going to have to be to meet a reasonable price point?

I don't think we are going to see a "reasonable" price point. And by reasonable I mean $500 or less, basically netbook level...

1. It wont have a phone radio.
2. You would replace a cell phone with a device that has a 10.6 inch screen and carry that everywhere you would normally carry a cell phone?
3. It won't be a color kindle that connects to iTunes.
4. I hope you don't want full OSX because there is one OSX program that you want to use. A tablet would bring a whole new meaning to "there's an app for that".

Those are unreasonable expectations though. You want to take a netbook and add a multitouch screen without increasing the price. Netbook margins are already razor thin.

With a new unlocked iPhone 3GS (32GB) going for $900, there's no way in hades this would be under $1K, assuming it exists at all. Netbooks are cheap because they run a 10-year old OS and use the cheapest components and housing possible. An all-new tablet device using a 10" touch screen, SSD, and all sexed up by Apple will be $$$.

If I remember correctly, I said 800+ and did not set a limitation. A macBook or MacBook Air like device multitouch (tablet), no DVD, for around 800-1200 I would consider with a 2GHZ processor.

I'm guessing e-book functionality will be exploited thru iTunes?

Also, what is the benefit of carrying around this tablet AND an iPhone?

A screen I can watch 720p or higher videos on, read my eBooks for class, browse the internet, have a bigger, higher res screen for VNC/RDP/SSH, edit Google docs without scrolling as much, etc.

You can't really go by what an iPhone costs unlocked. The 64GB iPT is $400, and it's an iPhone without the camera, phone, and GPS. Not a lot of a difference, hardware-wise.

Ya, other than that the deleted hardware costs another ~100 in component costs.

Foxconn sound like utter scum. Nice choice, Apple. I guess crappy working conditions are okay so long as your costs are kept down for maximum profit.
You're saying this as if it's something new. :p

ASUS and Foxconn have made Apple hardware for years. Even my Gigabyte motherboard had a few Foxconn labeled components on it.

You seem to suggest an overgrown iPod Touch for 800 bucks?

Yes, I would carry this device if it had the functionality of a laptop and full OSX with me as I would leave my laptop home and would be willing to pay 800 to 1200 for it.

Most times I would carry it if it has full laptop functionality, minus keyboard, minus dvd. In the rare occations I would not carry it, I would move my SIM to my iPhone and just carry that. However I can see me carry it just like carrying a standard physical pad of paper. Just one thing ... I am thinking about the convenience in a business situation and since I have my own company, I am always at work even when sleeping.

I have no use for an iPod Touch replacement, but could use it as an iPhone replacement for the advantage of the larger screen to write into and for the ability to see more of a web page or document in size large enough to read without zooming. One large pad of electronic pad of paper that gives me phone capability also.

An overgrown iPod Touch would not be of value to me given that I already have an iPhone. Would not buy it even for $50 bucks. But replacing the iPhone or even better replaceing a laptop and iphone with this would be of great value to me.

$900-$100 (deleted components) = $800 iPT. Oh wait, that's still double (and that's for the 64GB, which the iPhone of course does not come in).

Somehow I doubt that, as even just an iPT for $50 is a really good value. :D

I suspect you are spot on with your estimate. Now, also imagine that Apple has figured out some way to tie the new device to a service that will subsidize the end-user price down to $499.

I'd love a device that would let me see animated graphs of my 401K tanking at real time.

Ah thank you, I was looking for that number. I sure its not reasonable to expect, but I think that's more of less my point. People are expecting this thing to be cheaper than a computer, and it won't be, yet its being marketed as a E-reader. E-readers are under $300, CrunchPads are around $300, and any netbook can be got for around the same price. At upwards $600, double the price of any of those products, what features am I gaining that I haven't already invested in. Mobile media? That's a tough one to sell me on considering you already sold me a laptop and an iPod touch. Honestly I have to make an effort to use my iPod touch most of the time over my computer...I can't see this changing for a tablet.
