Bring those jobs back to America, Apple. Put the people to work here who buy your products. We have a saying here, in America we have no art...we do everything as well as we can.

you could assign everyone in America that needs a job to a factory, pay them well and you still could not touch the availability and scalability of Chinese labor.

I'm confused. Phil Schiller told us that scratches and chips are normal when dealing with a phone that is painted aluminum

So many questions - did Apple create these demands before complaints or right after people opened up boxes and found theirs with nicks?

Was Phil's response the typical Apple one "nothing wrong here - move along"?

Etc.

That being said - if the workers feel they are being mistreated - good for them for standing up for themselves.

I do wonder what this could do to the supply chain though...

Lets Hope

Forget the fact that this deals with the iPhone; this feels like we're possibly witnessing labor strikes in China. If this is a part of a worker's rights revolution, this could lead to a huge moment in history!

I hope for that. It could also lead to a massacre that we'll either never know about, or hear about until the end of time, due to the Apple Connection.

We could at least split the labor between the two countries.

The first iPhone 5 I got had a big scratch on the back as well. I did sent it back, of course. It wasn't acceptable for a $700 product.

The replacement I received 3 days later was just fine. More then fine, perfect.

Does anyone actually know what Foxconn workers get paid and how many hours they work?

From a NYT article:

"A typical Foxconn employee on the assembly line makes anywhere from 1,500 renminbi to 2,200 renminbi a month, based on 160 hours of work. At that salary, the wage ranges between $1.50 and $2.20 an hour, based on the exchange rate of 6.3 renminbi to the dollar."

However, it also mentions that most employees work in excess of 36hs in overtime, and work 6 day weeks.

I would argue - does it need to match Chinese labor? If Apple wanted - couldn't they do both. An onshore and offshore hybrid?

This just made me feel really bad about complaining about the scratches on my iPhone 5. I can't imagine being one of those factory workers. Makes me feel like an ******.

Honestly this has nothing to do with Apple. Foxconn and the upper management is the issue. Apple pays Foxconn x amount of dollars to make said product. Foxconn finds the cheapest labor in the world and puts them to work for pennies. Foxconn gets pissed at the workers if they don't get the product done right cause that comes out of Foxconn bottom line. So then that comes out of the workers pay.(which is not right) Apple uses Foxconn because they have the lowest bid and can pump the product out fast. Not Apples fault at all. IT IS FOXCONN that is the issue.

Perhaps, they have started one in Brazil. - I think it would interesting to have Apple put a factory here and sell US assembled products at a $200-$300 premium, see if people would vote with their wallets.

Revolution: when the workers hold it wrong.

Huge moment = when China's economy is ruined by unions.

Uh huh. You are implicitly supporting worker abuse. I have an idea--how about YOU go try working in a factory for a while, then get back to us about how bad unions are.

Actually, estimates are that building them here would add $4-6 per phone, not $300. And yes, I would gladly pay that.

Yes, and the price of that Iphone will double.

This is a fallacy.

Yes - the cost would go up for Apple for assembly - but where do you get "double." And further - Apple could easily reduce its profit margin to cover some/all of those costs.

I'd love to see where you can find evidence about the realities of what the iPhone would cost if it was assembled in part of whole here in the US.

It seems that many people just make wild assumptions on why it couldn't be done here without any hard data.

It's scary that you believe this to be true.

There has been data. The US doesn't have the facilities required, nor the workforce that would be necessary to move all the manufacturing here. This has been gone over so many times...

Diversify

Foxconn appears to be losing control over how it manages these situations. It would be well served for Apple to line up additional manufactures

Foxconn needs to become more sophisticated on how it manages its employee relationships. It needs to be more professional in its HR practices, training, retention, etc... Apple needs to demand this

Regarding the workers, there should be a blanket rule that if you cause any damage or bodily harm to anyone, your done. Your out. And you'll never be hired by Foxconn or Apple mfg again

$6 Direct labor that sounds great but then you need to add costs of freight to get all the raw materials over here and other overhead such as the costs of the facility and management. So lets say that it is as low as maybe $10 per unit? Then you have a retail variance of 4x that - so $40 premium, with less availability. It would be worth trying.

Wow... it looks like Apple is beginning to get hammered for what is arguably one of the more marginal iPhone models in terms of quality since the originals release.

The purple haze that ruins photos. A new problem that didn't exist on earlier models.

The Apple Maps debacle

ScuffGate, and on and on....

is some of the criticism because of more exposure than ever before?
