It's not about him thinking Apple can do no wrong, it's about YOUR incorrect perception that Apple ever hyped this as a cheap iPhone. It was the ridiculous expections of Wall Street and media pundits who felt Apple needed to introduce a cheap phone to gain marketshare back from Android based offerings.

Apple has heard a lot of feedback from people who wanted more color choice, so they modded last year's 5 into the 5c... c, for color, not cheap.

Not cheap? Read this article here in Macrumors..

That was the intent of the phone to be CHEAP so it can sell in Asia can catch up with the low cost Androids!

Maybe they should change the name to iPhone 5 F, as in flop. :D

Maybe I'm an outlier here but...

I pre-ordered a 5c, blue, 32gb unlocked. I'm completely happy with it. Well, I wish the blue were a hair darker like the Smart Cover of the new iPad Air.

I don't do video editing on my phone, I don't need 60fps in the latest 3d games on a super small phone screen. I usually keep the latest iPad if I want that stuff anyway.

The 5c is super fast for me (iOS 7 issues non withstanding). I like the feel of the casing and don't feel the need to use a case.

I wish it had a 64gb option yes, but I can make due with 32gb.

Not super thrilled with the unlocked pricing, but also the $100 difference between it and the 5s is ~3 months of cell phone payments for me (T-Mobile $30/100min/unlimited data) as I'll never be on a phone contract.

At the end of the day... to each their own. I bought a 5c and am perfectly happy with it, it fulfills my phone needs and then some. I had a black 5 with a previous job and it was nothing but nicks and scratches.

I agree with your assessment AT US PRICES. But take a look at some international (online) Apple Stores and you'll realize that Apple is attempting to obscenely rip-off customer with dated hardware.

it's $100 cheaper. just as every year before, apple is selling last-year's phone (5) in the second-tier spot with a $100 discount.

not sure why people dont get this.

Because we don't care about subsidized prices in "God's own country"? :p

As soon as I get your PayPal info from the hacker, I'll send it to you.

That was me, man. Remember? You were the one who bet me 20 bucks I couldn't do it.

Oh, and speaking of which, you owe me $25 now. And don't even begin to offer me hot pockets as payment. I swear to god if you do...

"what on earth? since 2008, apple has always sold the last-year's phone in the discounted #2 spot. how is it any different today?"

You just answered your own question. If they simply sold THE iPhone 5 alongside the iPhone 5S, people would actually buy the 5. But the 5C, even though it's on par with the 5 in terms of hardware, simply is not up to Apple's design philosophy. Apple spent years trying to convince people the beauty of aluminum, unibody, simplistic....etc. The plastic crap/5C goes against all that. I don't see why people don't understand this.

Macbook Air: Aluminum
Macbook Pro: Aluminum
iPad Mini: Aluminum
iPad Air: Aluminum
iMac: Aluminum
Mac Mini: Aluminum
Mac Pro: Aluminum
iPod Touch: Aluminum
iPod Nano: Aluminum
iPod Shuffle: Aluminum
iPhone 5: Aluminum
iPhone 5S: Aluminum
iPhone 5C: Polycarbonate? WTF

Good point. It would have made more sense to simply keep the iPhone 5 at a cheaper price point alongside the flagship 5s. Why move back to plastic when they've moved all their products across to aluminium. Doesn't make much sense unless maybe they are planning to develop more of their products in plastic so that maybe their "consumer" products will come in colour plastic and their "pro" products will come in aluminium so as to better differentiate their product lines.

I can see a certain logic in that if they made a plastic colour MB (bit like the old black and white MB from a few years ago) to match your iPhone 5c while keeping the aluminium MBA and MBP. I can see the appeal for a certain demographic of a matching colour MB and iPhone.

...are you threatening me?

Of course not. Now back to the topic at hand. Are you surprised that the 5 C is having lackluster sales? I think if you could buy it unlocked for $300 or so it would sell much better. At a price point so close to the flagship model and such a different, un-Apple like style, people prefer the 5S. The 5 C doesn't ooze quality and engineering excellence like the 5S does. IMO, of course.

The 5C oozes quality and engineering excellence to me, and I'm using an iPhone 5 right now. 5C feels like a ceramic piece and has substantial heft. It also feels great to hold.

I strongly agree with you though that the price is far too high, because the internal components are much less advanced than the 5S.

IMO the 5C 16GB should be $399 unlocked and $0 on contract, and the 32GB should be $499 unlocked and $99 on contract. I think that the pricing will eventually fall to this level.

Yeah, you're not getting out of owing me money that easily.

You're right. I wouldn't say it's a cheap looking phone, but it doesn't seem as...for lack of a better word...professional as the 5S. It's more expensive than what you'd expect from something that's been more or less branded as a high end budget line phone, yet not inexpensive enough to make it look like a good bargain in comparison to the 5S. The mere one hundred dollar price difference between the two isn't enough to justify its existence on store shelves.

Why spend $549 for a not quite as sleek second best option when you can spend just a relatively small bit more and get the latest and greatest? In my opinion, it needs to be $100 less to make it truly appealing.

The 5c should have had a lower price point and the lack of sales is indicating that Apple misread the situation

They need to stop selling the iPhone 4S. Just drop the "free" and have everybody pay $99 for a while. That would also let them drop more phones at the next iOS release next fall.

Could it be that Apple also designed the 5C because it wants to discourage the selling of non-Apple third-market plastic cases for their iphones?

We know Apple likes to sell its own stuff only, i.e. their not-very-good iPad cases, and their own cables/adapters.

smiling at his own company failing in everyone's eyes???

Which invariably happens to every company that sticks around long enough. Like life, history, civilization, its a series of ups and downs. Every kingdom falls eventually.

Some caused by actual events, some just because people changed.

Maybe Apple released a dud. Maybe people just got sick of Apple, changed expectations, changed opinions.

Anyway, the strong ones recover, are reborn stronger.

That's probably because Steve would have had the balls to release it at a competitive price point, without quivering in fear at the though of potentially cannibalising the 5s.

We won't ship junk.

----------

Really? Steve Jobs was known for releasing products at competitive price points? Like the original iPhone and the MacBook Air?

Steve released insanely great products. There is a segment of the market that is willing to pay a premium for that. It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Old tech in a plastic shell is a different item. Apple tried it. Maybe the demand was not as great as anticipated. It happens. Time to move on.

Previously, it was stated that assembly partner Pegatron has slashed production from 320,000 units per day in October to just 80,000 units per day, with Foxconn operating at a minimal capacity of 8-9,000 units per day.

So assuming without Foxconn producing the 5C they're still producing 80,000 units per day at Pegatron 2 months after release I'd say sales aren't too bad.

If they cut all production totally there'd be more reason for concern, but 80,000 per day after this period of time shows that there are still consistent sales of the product. Especially considering it was released at the same time as a popular competing product (5S).

Definitely beats the Samsung Watch with a total of 50,000 sales.

Our family has finally started moving off the Verizon family plan. My dad was the first to jump ship to T-mobile with a Nexus 5. I would get an off-contract iPhone if Apple sold them at reasonable prices. Seeing as how I will probably be forced to buy a new phone (I've had the same LG Dare since 2008 or so), I am probably going to end up buying the cheapest Android phone I can, maybe the Moto G if it's out in the US. But I would prefer an iPhone—not interested in buying the iPhone 4S (8 GB) for $450 either when the Nexus 5 (16 GB) is $349.

I think Apple made a strategic mistake here, as I think more people like me are going to be looking at off-contract pricing. And given that the iPad mini with Retina display is $399, I think they could make an iPhone in that price range.

I don't know anyone with a 5C and only 1 person with a 5S. Most seem to be grabbing the nexus brand of phones since they want a bigger screen (and are relatively cheap).

Maybe instead of release 2 phones with same screen they should have admitted people want bigger screens and just build one.

Apple could afford to be arrogant under Steve, but not under Tim.
