If your EFI version is B01, and you can install 10.8.2 without updating the EFI, do so. Otherwise stay where you are until Apple releases a fixed EFI. If your computer happens to come with the latest EFI, then you may as well just update to 10.8.2 since it won't matter at that point.
where can I find my EFI version?
Thanks

When is that new EFI update coming. My system is completely unstable while gaming now. Reset SMC and it continues to act up. I had no throttling issues before, now it just throttles up and down. Gaming is completely out of the question now.
+1, want to know when 10.8.3 or whatever version comes next will be released.

Surprised this is being ignored... this is a serious issue. I'm affected by this now as well, and from looking around online so are many others.

I have to reset the SMC every single time I reboot, otherwise I literally can't play any games (10 fps on low settings doesn't count).

Come on with an EFI update Apple :(

I had to reset SMC for the first time yesterday and it was because I plugged in an external monitor and the screen resolution setting in the game went way up. I've been playing in 1440x900 (still great for battlefield 3 and 50-60 fps multiplayer) for 200 hrs and not one reset. If your sick of resetting it, back your resolution down.

I sometimes wonder why I've never seen this problem - not even once. I play loads of games on boot camp and osx and always put it to sleep when I'm done.

Latest EFI too, Very odd.

I have to agree with this post too. I do not wish to doubt my fellow MBPr brothers and sisters but I have not encountered this either. I play games on both Bootcamp and in OS X and do not have this issue.

Under OS X I just bought COD:BO and not a single issue.

Again, I do not doubt their claims, but I just haven't seen this.

It is odd.

I think how demanding the game is and screen resolution triggers the problem. COD isn't very demanding.

What games and res are you using?

No, I don't think it's resolution related.
I'm running:

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit at 2880 x 1800.
Diablo 3 at 2240 x 1400.
Street Fighter x Tekken at 2880 x 1800.
Crysis 2 at 2240 x 1400.
Need For Speed Most Wanted at 2240 x 1400.

And I haven't seen the EFI bug prop up again. I did have it before, but it's gone now for some reason.

I should've said combined, resolution and how demanding the game is. I'm sure you can play Tetris at 2880x1800 and be ok. I only play one game so I can't add much but I find it odd that I never had one problem w BF3 w resetting the SMC until my in game resolution setting went to max res when I plugged in a monitor. It seems if you can keep the fps up your ok.

How are your fps is those games?

FPS drop with WebKit r135516

I'm not sure that this is related to the problems you guys have, but I'll mention it anyway. I've discovered that WebKit r135516 slows down the framerate under OSX. I've been able to reproduce this about 15 times in a row.

Method to test:

1. Reboot computer, running only the necessary software.
2. Switch to discrete graphics with gfxcardstatus.
2. Run the Unigine benchmark and get the average FPS. For me it's usually 28 - 29 FPS @ 1680 x 1050.
3. Exit Unigine.
4. Open Safari with Webkit r135516 and browse around a bit. The Verge seems to pull things into slow mode.
5. Exit Safari.
6. Run Unigine benchmark again. The result for me will be anywhere between 18 and 23 FPS @ 1680 x 1050.

To get things back to normal, it is not necessary to reset the SMC. All you need to do is log out and start a new session (or reboot). If I stay away from the Webkit, each time I run the Unigine benchmark I get the same result of 28-29 FPS.

Currently, I'm running the following with all settings maxed and the screen resolution between 1680 to 2880 depending if the game supports it or if I can read something.

Under OS X:
BO
Guild Wars 2
Deux Ex
COD4
Sims3

Boot Camp:
SkyRim
Rage
HL2 et al

Also, I jump in and out when I need a break under OS X. So I leave all my other stuff up and running and jump into GW2 or BO when I want to break for 15 or 20 mins. So OS X can be running for days and days between reboot.

Hope this helps...

The Witcher 2 - 1680x1050 medium (sometimes brings the framerate to low 20s at times)

Dead island -Maxed out at 1920x1200

Skyrim - 1920x1200 high

Crysis - 1920x1200 high dx10

Thats what i've been playing for the last couple of weeks and experienced no EFI bug.

Question for you people with the EFI problem:

Do you still have the bug appear if you were to disable CPU turbo boost in bootcamp?

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit at 2880 x 1800 - 22-35ps (dropping down to 2560 x 1600 gives 42-55fps, but I like the sharp look at 2880 x 1800 better)

Diablo 3 at 2240 x 1400 - 60fps

Street Fighter x Tekken at 2880 x 1800 - 60fps

Crysis 2 at 2240 x 1400 - 24-32fps

Need For Speed Most Wanted at 2240 x 1400 - 18-33fps (dropping down to 1920 x 1200 gives 28-42fps)

I was running Need For Speed in the same... condition while I had the EFI bug. Now I don't have it anymore... mysteriously.

I'm running Diablo III on OSX at 1504x940 and after a time playing it goes down to 20-30 fps, the really strange thing is that fan speed is really low during this "slowdown" about 2500rpm. So I really do not understand why it slowdowns and the temperature is really not hot at all.

Regards,

today I tried to restart my RMBP without reset the SMC and Diablo 3 now run very well...

Temporary solution, now i have still the problem... A new reboot not change the situation...

Apple we waiting for update!!!

I get the random SMC lag when playing StarCraft 2. Hopefully Apple gets around to fixing it really soon, it's really annoying to have to reboot the computer each time I want to play and reset the SMC, even if the boot time is only 10 seconds.

Been playing SC2 quite heavily the last week or so. No issues so far but I did reset SMC when I first started Win7 in Bootcamp(only because it gave me a terrible rating for Video Graphics performance(5.2 vs 7.2))

I haven't tried playing in Windows, only OS X, so maybe that's where the glitch is happening.

I first installed SC2 in OSX and was getting about 30 fps and lagging very hard on custom maps like Marine Arena. In Bootcamp I get a solid 40-70 fps no matter what. WAY better performance in Bootcamp. I don't mind switching over to windows when I need to get my SC2 on!

Good thing to know. When I reset the SMC and all is going good, I can get a solid 50 fps on 1680x1050 with everything on Ultra. It's just every time I want to start it goes to the toilet, unless I reset the SMC first.

I may try to use Windows instead, and see how that goes.

I personally find it is related to the machine going into a deep sleep.

Though since the last couple of updates I do get the problem A LOT less. But again sometimes when it has been asleep and I wake it up, the problem occurs until I reset the SMC and restart it.

I had to reset my SMC for the first time today after having unplayable framerates in an older Steam game. The cutscenes were even lagging at Retina resolution.

No big deal I guess, but I feel bad for the people who haven't seen this thread. When my performance sucked I knew exactly what it was.

Apple is really cementing Mac's reputation as a terrible gaming computer. I bought a maxed out MBP Retina precisely because I *thought* it would be a great gaming computer. Instead, I get a machine that can't run games any faster than a $400 PC laptop ... unless you are willing to reboot once daily to reset your SMC.

How, seriously, can they let this happen?! Does Apple not have ONE person doing any testing when they do firmware updates? Ludicrous.

Does this happen suddenly while your playing a game under Bootcamp? Or does it just happen while playing in OSX?

Ive must of played over 60 hours of Skyrim and Dead Island the last few weeks in Bootcamp and Ive never seen the SMC bug... in fact, Ive never reset the SMC even once since I got the laptop
