Its gone now. getting "the item you tried to buy is no longer availible" error.
Without using a link, go to the iTunes Store home page and search for heffron. You should still be able to find the freebie for another day or two.

I can find it, but then when I attempt to purchase it just tells me iTMS has kindly refreshed my cart and the unavailable items are just that. :p *shrug* oh well.

already tried it that way - still unavail. i think this may be the first one i've missed in a while.

I can still search for it and find it free.

Do you see it there, but with a price? If you put it in your shopping cart, does it still have a price?

Finally, are you using the U.S. store?

I can find it and add it to my car-- the whole time it is listed as 'Free.' But when I try to check out, it tells me that certain items in my cart are no longer available, they've been kindly removed, and to review my order before I submit...

which leaves me w/ an empty cart and no free song. :p

What happens when you switch to one-click purchasing?

Believe me, you didn't miss anything... this is one of the few "songs" that I got from the iTunes Store and deleted, actually the first one I deleted right away... :p

Here's a peculiar one: a free 20-minute audio "energizer nap" (ambient music with some voice at the start) from Pzizz:

http://www.pzizz.com/
(look on the right)

Trivial technical Q: why cannot I not change the tags (title, album, art etc.) of that MP3? I can add new tags but not change existing ones in iTunes. Just curious. Inquiring minds want to know.

I had that problem a while ago, it was because iTunes didn't recognise it as a MP3, but as a "QuickTime Media File" or something like that. The only solution was to convert it to a AAC (or whatever you prefer) directly in iTunes.

If anyone knows why it's like that, I'd like to know it, too, but at least you know how to fix it now :D

That's exactly correct. I've downloaded many a .mp3 from the net like that. Another solution is to download this nifty little one trick pony of a utility called iLikeYouMore, which I found at http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7686 and just change the file Type and Creator to match with an iTunes .mp3 file. Works much easier than I explained. And by the way, I'm not the creator of the program, just a fan. It's a free program anyway...

[:(
I've missed out on all the freebies boo that :p
Interesting thread tho..
I was on holiday last week in London and saw loads of the coke promotions for free songs, but none here in rain soaked Ireland...

I remember that, it’s a program that generates customized files like that. I tried it once and didn’t really like it, but it’s interesting anyway.

Handy tip from Rob Griffiths at macworld:

Highlight this text:
itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewRoom?fcId=188575544
Drag it to the Finder (to the desktop or into any folder) and rename it to Free on iTunes.inetloc.

From now on, you can double-click it to go directly to the "Free on iTunes" page in the iTunes Store, without having to go to a URL in your web browser first!

I like the song title and artist title of the Single of the Week this week. Mute Math is obviously named after one of my favorite subjects: mimes. Oh wait, make that math. And Plan B is no doubt named after the Plan B operating system (no, not after the controversial drug).

If you listen carefully, you'll hear them mention Plan C too. I'm not sure what that refers to. Perhaps it has something to do with the Dutch railway museum, which isn't quite as geeky as math and operating systems.

When I did this, I got taken to a store called "Exclusively on iTunes" and the songs listed are not free. Is that link correct for the U.S. iTMS?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I found this myself while testing it. Sometimes it would take me to the "Free on iTunes" page, and sometimes to the "Exclusively on iTunes" page. Even in iTunes itself, on the home page, I could click one link and be taken to the other one!

So, apparently, either of these may work at a given time:
Free (or maybe Exclusively) on Itunes:

Exclusively (or maybe Free) on iTunes:

Thanks for the tip. It was only a matter of time before I needed something like RedEdit for OS X, and maybe this will serve :)
