Is it possible for someone to do a hash (MD5, SHA1) on their copy of the following song?
Tue Jul 4: Rockie Lynne - Red, White and Blue - Country

Mine is skipping (to the next song) at the 31st second on my iPod Photo 40GB.

I've tried reset the iPod, deauthorize and reauthorize my iBook, delete and put the song back, but to no avail.

Thanks in advance!
I don't have a hash for it, but file Red, White and Blue.m4p is 3,611,780 bytes long. Check that for starters.

Thanks for the replies, everyone...

I forgot all about the DRM and asked for the MD5... :p

Anyway, the size is 3,611,788 bytes...

FYI, it played OK on both my iBook G4 and PC's iTunes... it just skips when I play it on my iPod photo 40gb...

And... it also skips on my iPod shuffle 512MB! I just tested it right before posting this message... :(

Just to be sure, in the Options tab of the track’s Info in iTunes, is Stop Time unchecked? Because that’s the only thing I can think of, aside from a bad copy to the iPod (which you already ruled out).

If that’s not it, see if you can check someone else’s copy (not mine, sorry, I didn’t get it), or on a different iPod, or tell the iTunes staff about it and ask them to let you re-download it.

edit: When you say delete and put back, do you mean you took it off the iPod, and then copied it back on? And have you tried restoring the iPod with the utility? If none of those things worked, I’d be at a total loss.

Nope... Stop Time was not checked... otherwise, it would play for exactly 31 seconds on both iTunes too (Mac and PC).

I deleted the song from the iPod (using iTunes) then dragged the song back in...

I'm not trying the restore option since its going to be quite messy... it occured on both my iPods... so, I guess its not the fault of the iPod...

Anyway, I've lodged an email to Apple support... I hope to hear from them soon... Thanks! :D

If they help you resolve it, please post back here and tell us the answer.

I have a question. There is music in the Australian itunes store that I would love to have, but I know that you cant purchase music from other countries music store. So I was thinking, and came up with an idea. If I bought a gift card to the australian music store, would I be able to redeem it in the au music store? I called my local Apple Store and they didnt know.

I think that’s how it works—gift cards etc. are only redeemable in the one store. You won’t need a credit card because of the gift card, but I think you’ll have to make an AU account with your name and address. (That’s how some of us are able to get SOTWs and such from foreign stores.)
I know of at least one Canadian who, frustrated by Battlestar Galactica’s absence in Canada, bought a U.S. card so he could purchase and legally download episodes.

25 free iTunes every week on Facebook

There is already a Macrumors thread about this:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/219093/

Summary:
On Facebook, just become a member of the Apple Students group.
Check your Facebook messages, and there will be a redeemable Apple iTunes certificate which is good for downloading a batch of 25 selected iTunes every week all summer (250 songs total).

Enjoy!

My latest reply to their default answers...
Hi there,

I've mentioned that it played well on both my PC and Mac iTunes.

It doesn't play properly on both my iPods (photo 40GB and shuffle 512MB). It skips when it reaches the 31st second.

FYI, I've tried all the steps you mentioned prior to sending this email.

Please advice what to do next.

Dear XCool,

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble playing your purchases on your iPod. Please know that we are aware that this is an audio issue, not a video issue. Here are some resources that might help.

The most common reason items don't play properly is because either iTunes or the iPod software is out of date. Here's where you can find the latest versions:

Download iTunes
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download

Get iPod Updater
http://www.apple.com/ipod/download

If you have never updated your iPod before, this article will help:

Instructions for updating iPod
http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n60944

If you already have the latest version of iTunes and the iPod software and you still can't play items to your iPod, read this:

Instructions for when songs in iTunes don't copy to iPod
http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n93867

You'll also find a wide variety of helpful iPod troubleshooting tips, tutorials, and service information at http://www.apple.com/support/ipod.

I hope these resources help to resolve the issue you are experiencing.

Important note: If you still need assistance, you might consider calling Apple technical support at 800-APL-CARE (800-275-2273). Help is available seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. central time. There may be a fee associated with the call.

Thanks.

The song mentioned above stops playing at approximately the 31st second when played on an iPod (both my iPod photo 40GB and my iPod shuffle 512MB).

It played OK on both iTunes on my iBook and PC.

I've tried unauthorize, reauthorize my iTunes, I've also tried deleting the song from my iPods and reloading it. I've also tried resetting the iPods. None of them worked.

The only thing I've not tried is "restoring the iPod". Since it occured on both my iPods, I don't think restoring will help.

Thanks.

Japanese store

I just noticed: this week, the iTMS-J has free stuff on the front page. Just go to the main page and see the word “Free” in fancy letters. It’s apparently in celebration of their first birthday in Japan.

Japanese birthday

I was apparently too lazy to check my email before today. Here’s the text about iTunes’ first birthday in Japan, from the New Music Wednesday email (remember, they’re on the other side of the International Date Line):
祝 iTunes 1周年

今週で1周年を迎える iTunes から感謝の気持ちを込めて。ワールドプレミア(世界初公開)となるBeckの新作ビデオ"Nausea"や Ken Ishii 新曲、また筒井康隆のオーディオブック「最後の喫煙者」などを8月2日から1週間、無料ダウンロード。
SysTran translation, since I don’t know nearly enough Japanese:
Celebration iTunes 1st anniversary

Including the feeling of appreciation from iTunes which this week attains 1st anniversary. The new work video "Nausea" of Beck which be comes the world premiere (worldwide first release) and Ken Ishii new tune and in addition tube well healthy Takashi's audio book "last smoker" and so on from August 2nd 1 week, no charge download.

Anyone had problems with the latest download?
60. Tue Aug 08: Tres Coronas - Mi Tumbao - Latin [DD]
59. Tue Aug 08: The Feeling - Sewn (Radio Edit) - Rock [SOTW]
Mi Tumbao is skipping on mine (iPod only) but plays well on iTunes...

As per my previous posting, iTMS has promised to look into it, but will only be able to get back to me 2 weeks later. :(

Can you recommend any particular tracks? I like the track from the opening of "Ghostworld" (Jaan Pahechan Ho by Mohd. Rafi)—anything like that on there?

Somehow, that message seems more like spam than free iTunes stuff… Maybe it’s just me.
When a site's purpose is legal distribution of free music, links to it are fine.

Trivia of the day

This is the first time I've seen Apple list the two free weekly iTunes in the "wrong" order on the iTunes Music Store home page. They have the Discovery Download first, then the Single of the Week, and they haven't done it that way before. Previously, the artist for the Single of the Week has always been first.

People who notice such things probably need to get a life, so I'll start working on that right now.
