Today's Discovery Download is the first "free tune" (but not a tune) in the Comedy category. I like humor but I'd rather have a real song.

I guess Apple wants customers to sample a little of everything.

That's why it's a "Discovery" download!:p

Austin SXSW

Not quite iTunes but a hole bunch of free mp3 songs brought to you via Austin TX, SXSW. Just click on music at the top or click on SXSW BANDS button on the right and pick a day or alphabetical listing page and you can download a hole fracking load of music.

Is anyone else still seeing “Nine Black Alps” and “Assassin” on the homepage? They do link to Dynomite and Engvall respectively, but it seems the links themselves weren’t updated.

Thanks, joepunk.

I went ahead and spidered the site and built a complete download list here:

http://www.flawlesswalrus.com/sxsw.html

Anyone with a download manager will appreciate this. Or anyone who hates navigating though all the ads just to get some music. There really are some great bands and songs here. 3.6 GB of music in total.

Thats cool. Is there any songs that you'd recommend to download?

It was a nice break from the ordinary though, and maybe I'm alone, but it was pretty funny...

Heeere's your sign...

reality :)

I can see some previous Song of the Week artists in the offering of SXSW MP3's: Brandie Carlisle, Controller:controller, Kisschasy, Metric, Moka Only, Nine Black Alps, Novillero, She Wants Revenge, The Melligrove Band, The Novaks, Tyler Hilton, We are Scientists...I am sure there are more.

The Metric and She Wants Revenge cuts are the same ones offered through iTunes...and are among my favorites anyway.

This seems to be a treasure trove...best thing to do is down load them all, listen a few times and weed out wants you don't like.

SXSW (South-by-Southwest) is a fantastic experience, the city of Austin literally explodes with bands each year in March. Every genre including some unclassifiable is represented, every open space in the city becomes a venue (I've listened to a band in a hair salon). Keep an open mind and you will have fun.

My freakin' goodness, there's a ton of songs there! How is anybody supposed to separate the wheat from all that chaff? I'm downloading songs from the 15 or so bands I recognize, but that's it!

Your welcome.

And thanks for the complete list uninhibited by ads and such. Got any recommendation for a download manager?

Any shot of getting access via FTP.. I would love to just pull them all at one shot.

access via FTP

I'm just linking to the files publicly available on their server.

Free and legal.

FTP would require some kind of hack, and I'm not gonna even try that.

Download Managers are great for getting this stuff all in one shot.

Try one out.

Has anyone else tried using Automator to download all of those files? I used the following actions (sorry that I don't have my Mac here to get the names exactly right) to create a workflow that almost works.

1. get URL of active window in Safari
2. get URL's of all links from the source page (defined by URL in step 1)
3. download files from URL (defined by list of URL's in step 2)

This works for a time and I get about 10-12 files downloaded. Then the workflow fails with an error, but no explanation. It's not the first 10-12 files either. Could it be that multiple connections are being denied by the server where all these MP3's live, and I'm only getting the files from successful connections? Is there a way to tell Automator to download one at a time to test this theory?

Any other ideas?

Could the “Back” link at the top of the page be causing the error? Try saving the page locally and deleting the first link. I’d try it myself, but… well, I’m lazy.

No, the html page gets downloaded just fine along with the MP3s. The files seem to get downloaded in almost a random order. I'm not sure what's going on. I'm trying FlashGot for Firefox now, but that didn't work the first time either. It got the first 75 files and stopped.

I think there are Javascript bookmarklets around that download all the links on a page when clicked. Or maybe they can only open the links…
Don’t some web browsers have an option to save all linked files? Or you could use a spidering program to do that. I’m too short on disk space (and iPod space) to even attempt it right now…

Wow, I missed the post that stated there were 3.6 GIG of music here. I started it using a download manager (thanks for the rec) and walked away. I came back a couple hours later and it was still going?? I am almost done. There is some pretty good stuff and a lot of variety..
