You mean they actually do have them in the States? I just assumed it was some made up spin nonsense popularised by Fox News :D

And I'm fully in agreement about calling them chips. I remember being on a business trip up in Blackburn a few years back with a colleague from London. As we ordered food, he asked the waitress if the restaurant did fries and she looked at him blankly. I had to explain he meant chips. She gave him a right look :)

We were totally going to order the fries in french from the pizza place. But it was raining, and we're poor so we didn't leave/eat out.

So the freedom/french thing really didn't have anything to do with your decision?

I do wonder how many of these places got caught up in the hoopla and just don't want to bother changing the menu back. A lot of places that I frequent use the same menus as long as they can, until they are falling apart. Moreover, if a large number of the people in the ghall area disike the French (for whatever reason), it may be commercially sound to use a different name, and that has a bit of kitch value to it. I don't really care about the fries one way or another, but my French experience was less than pleasurable.

I've never seen them on a menu either, but considering the reason why some restaurants dropped the "French" references from their menus, and what happened after, perhaps we should be calling them "They Were Right After All Fries."

Yes, it was part of a long drawn out pre-emtive strike called Operation Enduring Potatoe. :D It's a collaborative effort between Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and Dan Quayle.

Order the Freedom Fries, but ask for their bottle of Impeachment sauce. If they say there's no such thing, tell them, "Yeah, well there should be."

I love it!

I'll use it the next time I hear someone say freedom fries.

I wouldn't eat there strictly based on the fact that they sell "Cheese Styxs."

Are they catering to 9 year olds? What's the deal!?

Haha, yeah, that's funny too.

I should go scope out the place one day and see what it looks like.

Am I the only one who's sick of the American media and government's contrived use of patriotic words like "freedom"? Or the more fitting Bushism "freedoms"?

Honestly, they're starting to make me feel sick to the stomach. When I hear "freedom," I think "America," and everyone knows that's just silly. ;)

[Edit]: Hmm. What I am posting below was originally in another post and a mod deleted it... maybe because it was another post or maybe because they didn't like its content. Seems like mods/a mod are/is deleting a lot of my posts lately. What's the deal?

According to a statement released by Ney, this move was a symbolic effort to express displeasure with France's "continued refusal to stand with their U.S. allies" (see Iraq disarmament crisis). The statement further read: "This action today is a small, but symbolic, effort to show the strong displeasure many on Capitol Hill have with our so-called ally, France."

The French embassy made no comment, except to point out that French fries come from Belgium. "We are at a very serious moment dealing with very serious issues and we are not focusing on the name you give to potatoes," said Nathalie Loisau, an embassy spokeswoman.

You're not alone.

The words "freedom", "patriotic", "9/11", "support the troops" all make me sick to my stomach. There should be a 10 year ban on using any of those words.

I agree, especially with "support the troops." I was a troop tired of hearing how much everyone supported the troops.
