Freespace 2 OS X!

End of Game?

Upon Blowing up two of the four turrets, you should be able to proceed to the next level. The level after that one requires you to destroy the Sathanas, after blowing that sucker up and cleaning up the rest of the baddies, there are no further instructions, no "return to base" orders, no more baddies no nuthin'! Just empty space, I waited around and finally jumped back to a scolding for leaving the field of battle, I tried it again and again with the same results.

is this the end of the game? i just don't want it to be over, any tricks or steps i'm missing? has anyone else encountered this?

also, I'm on an Intel mac and i have a lot of missing graphics for ships, and the nebula are very "blocky" do i need to enter the -jpgtga thingy??

any help would be great!!
 
Freespace 1 and 2 on widescreen

Hey all.

I have been looking every where trying to find a way to get both of these games to view correctly on a widescreen flat panel monitor. I know i shouldnt have gotten one when i love vintage space games. (freespace1&2, descent 3, homworld 1&2 and homeworld cataclysm) All the rest i have figured out but freespace 1&2 just wont budge. I am also running windows xp which i know doesnt belong here but i have not found another place that may be able to help.
Looking at what was posted a few pages back i would say if any group could, this would be it.

That's not the end of the game. Far from it. Normally, the Colossus should appear and be destroyed, and the mission would end. How many times have you played the mission? What version of FS2_Open are you using?

It would also be helpful to post your command line.

I haven't had any problem getting freespace to run on my widescreen iMac. Hey Soulstorm...it looks like we all got some sort of moniker added to our nick. Not sure what it means but whatever.

Widescreen resolutions aren't really supported yet. It's just the way that the code works, the fact that we are still using some of the old software rendering path in the engine, and it just wasn't designed for that sort of stuff. It is going to be fixed though, but I can't really give an ETA as to when. Initially it will just be the FOV stuff that messes up the targetting brackets and the object culling. After that we'll move to getting the interface graphics to work better widescreen.
 
Hey, I just installed FS2_open the other day, and it runs fine except for one problem... it keeps crashing when I'm in the middle of a mission. I will post the crash log here (I'm sorry, but it's really long). I'd be really grateful if you could help out, because the game is really cool.

Well, I thought I might as well make a new post in this old thread to notify about the changes that have happened in the FS2_Open Launcher for OS X.

The application has reached 1.1 status, and it's available here. Changelog is available here, and the readme is available online here.

I strongly urge everyone to download the newest version. This is no more a beta. It has tons of bug fixes, more comprehensive documentation, updates checking, improved mod support, and many more things that I am really bored to mention here. It was about time Mac users have a decent launcher with which to run FS2_Open and take advantage of all its new features without having to mess with the command line file.

Perhaps the greatest addition is the "Check for Updates" option, which uses Sparkle for OS X. It's a very nice new feature, and that's why I recommend using the latest version. If you find any bug, pm me or send me an e-mail.

I strongly recommend you use this application instead of messing with the .cfg file, since the cfg file may give you a lot of headaches.

Nice, thanks Soulstorm. Am I correct about the possibility that this launcher is going to be supported fully in the next version of FS2_Open, or actually become a working part? I thought i read somewhere that Taylor wanted to use it in the next FS2_Open because the mac didn't really have a launcher before

In IMG forums, Taylor mentioned that in the next version of FS2_Open, he wishes to include the OS X Launcher with the release binaries. I contacted him a few minutes ago via pm, to see if he really wishes to do so.

I would really like the launcher to be included with the release binaries, of this version or the next (although I am not the one to decide that). Mac users have long had problems regarding the command line management. I remember trying to run FS2_Open for the first time a couple of years back. I didn't know Cocoa back then :) . I have been using the Launcher extensively now, and I believe that everyone will find it pretty useful.
 
Apologies, I haven't read through the thread, but can anyone tell me what kind of hardware we're looking at to play Freespace 2 at the highest graphics quality (With all the fancy graphics plug-ins mentioned in the first post of this thread)?

I mean, will a 15" 2.33 GHz MBP with 256 X1600 do it, or do you really need a Mac Pro with the X1900XT?

Oh, and god damn, this game looks sweet! Congrats to all involved in the project! And thanks for collating all that stuff in the first post. Shall be back here real soon, hopefully with something somewhat faster than I have now.
 
I am running Freespace 2 on very good settings on my computer, your MBP will handle it very nicely.

You might have a problem with the controls though, unless you have a joystick (Or like the trackpad)

Well I don't have one, and I don't intend to get one until the Santa Rosa revision. Oh, and I have a spare 1 button mouse lying around, so that takes care of that. If not, universal keyboard controls.

it's really really annoying...especially when you are just about to jump out, making you have to redo the level.
 
3.6.9 is the version you all must download. It features a number of stability and performance improvements, and it works with the latest media .vp's. The FS2_Open OS X Launcher is also designed with 3.6.9 in mind, and I haven't tested it with earlier versions.

Note that with 3.6.9 you will also need to download the latest media .vp files, as 3.6.9 will not work with the ones you are using now.

3.6.10 version is rumored to have a lot of performance improvements. However, 3.6.9 will run just fine with all setings set to max in a decent configuration. My G5 in my sig runs the game flawlessly in 10.4, in 1280x1024 resolution. So, don't worry about it.
 
Freepace 2 assorted queries

Hello all,

Firstly, thanks to all you guys who built and then spent time helping all of us get this game running! It looks fantastic!

Couple of questions:
1) Where do I get the mp-710 vp's? If I already have the other ones, do I need them? I tried the three links on the hard light media vp's section (the ones that end in .rar), but my browser refuses to load them.

2) When I have -env command entered in my configuration line there is a bug. If the mission takes place inside a nebula, after I click accept the mission should start straight away. Instead, everything does start except my display does not move past the last page of the mission briefing. I can shoot my guns and here all of the sound effects, but I don't see anything unless I remove the -env command.

3) Smoke trails coming off ships after I shoot them are surrounded in black boxes. As well as the sun graphic in nebula's. Also, When I shoot at ships shields, they just turn black. Is this normal? Is there a fix?

Aside from these minor details, the game looks great and plays awesome! Thanks again to all of you for your hard work.

That's the first time I hear something about that. Can you please run the debug version of FS2_Open and post the file in "~/Library/FS2_Open/data/fs2_open.log (with "~" being your home directory)"?

It is rumored that a new version is coming next month with plenty of fixes for graphics stuff.

Post the log in here (please use code tags), and maybe I can find someone who can help.
 
Just put them into your freespace 2 directory and they will be automatically loaded. Or, you can put them into a folder, lets say, "mediavps" and use the launcher to launch FS2_Open with the "mod" option se to "mediavps".

Note that in order to use them inside the game, you must use the Launcher to use the additional graphics options provided by the FS2_Open application.

Look, guys, don't mess with manual install options. There is a very handy installer that will automatically install all the necessary files in order to play FS2_Open.
 
All is well

I finally got those mp_710 files installed. They fixed all the graphics issues that I was having. Thanks for all the help with all of this! Now I just need to find the Original Freespace missions and I'll be set!
 
ah i got the Mvmedia files installed, but i still get black boxes around those purple clouds in the beginning missions, and sometimes my lasers disappear, or my HUD greys out when i fire the prometheus laser. :confused:

also the first mission with the ion clouds, i hear audio (i press tab and i hear afterburners, where the guy says "iota wing, go" "alpha wing" etc...) but the screen is stuck on the mission briefing.

any solutions?
