Not if you count medical biggs that they don't have to pay in Europe. In the US insurance is really a form of tax

. It is a tax that in the US system the government outsources to a for-profit company.

But at the end everyone pays himself so it make you worrie about. When the system covers it anyway, then why to worrie? This is only making lazy people.

I'm single and healthy and right now my medical insurance is quite cheap. Of course that will all change with Obamacare when the costs are shifted to the healthy.

In the UK you can have an iPhone 5 with unlimited data (no capping or throttling), 7000 minutes, 5000 texts for £36 per month. All from these lovely people http://www.three.co.uk/

I see some stories on MacRumors and other sites, and you US based people really do pay a lot don't you?

Well la dee da, that's just too bad. I'm just about to cry tears of laughter. Carriers in france are blaming the customer for being frugal? It's not the customer's job or responsibility to keep you guys in business. Hear this. :p

I doubt a bunch of cheap frenchies is going to make any real difference to Apple or Samsuck.

USA is the only place in the developed world where consumers of telecom bandwidth are paying the highest prices. Cheapest rates are found in China. What does that mean?

Europe is Apple's #1 cash cow, France is a big part of that.

What Richard is not explaining is Why his telecom isn't making the huge profits it used to. The answer is simple: Free Mobile, a new telecom, which came on the market and offered an unlimited phone plan (voice, SMS, 3G, MMS, eaps, et al.) for 16€ a month, no subsidized phones. They also released a 2€ plan. Both these plans forced competitors to switch their plans from 100€+ to 30€ or less. Basically, they lost all their margin and are in really bad shape.

For the consumer however, a lower plan means a lot more money saved up to buy newer devices more frequently. I actually believe the tendency will be to buy high end devices more frequently.

I feel for you guys in the states, your plans are ridiculously expensive. You can pick up a sim only plan with 2000 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data (truly unlimited) with tethering included for around $37/month.

Where?

I always get a big kick when it comes to US smart phones market.

The "price" of an iPhone is around $200 with a two-year contract (has been that way for a few years now) and the "frugal" customer is expected to pay about $100 per month (for average usage plans).

The supposed price of iPhone is less than 10% of total cost of your phone bill in those contract bound two years.

Would you really care about the $200 that you paid?

People need to realize that you are really buying a $2400 phone instead of $200 phone.

The cellphone is the biggest rip-off here. The landline and home internet costs have come down but mobile phone cost is still way up there. The data plan alone for cellphone is like $40 and voice is like $45. Do you think this is really a fair price?

If you look at other countries, most consumers would not pay $100 per month for cellphone usage.

Yep we get totally ripped off... T-Mobile shaking it up is good. I use straight talk to facilitate my needs and its generally good. Ill go to T Mobile because of the HD Voice and LTE option for 5$ more

People are broke!
#fact Economy is hurting. Between internet at home and cell I spend almost $1400 then the cost of the phone, its pretty asinine. If I had tv another 800$ a year. For what to mouth breath watching a box, bad enough how much time I spend online.

Agreed. Where?

Check out http://mobile.free.fr

15.99€ for unlimited plan, including some international free calls.

Including unlimited international calls to about 100 countries (Canada, USA, India, China...)

Sounds great, but they don't brag about the cost of their international texts (19 cents/message) or the fact that their data SUCKS to the point of being completely, utterly unusable. Ever had to deal with AT&T's data throttling? It's about the same. Worse than EDGE speeds.
Free forced all the carriers to cut their pricing in half, but at this point they offer one of the worst deals on the French market if you need data.

PCs
Laptops
HD TVs
MP3 Players
Smart Phones
Tablets

Are all going to be or already are commoditized products. Apple, Samsung, Google, Amazon will all pay a huge hit.

There are no winners in this game.

Not really. We are 6 on a family plan, and everyone pays their own data + their share of minutes and text. Ends up being $50 for everyone with unlimited M2M, texts (and for half of us data; others 3GB).

$30 vs $50 is 66% more, and again, not everyone is on a family plan.

Don't worry, you won't stay healthy forever, nobody does.

I'm currently on this, in the UK:

250 minutes
Unlimited texts
Unlimited web

$18 a month - 1 month rolling contract.

I have no idea if that's a good deal or not!

I plan on doing the same thing, but not switching carriers, staying with AT&T, just that their $36.00 fee plus the $199 phone is just a waste every year, so I will wait every two or maybe more to see what comes out from Apple. I have the IP5 and I am happy, plan on waiting for the IP6 or whatever next years model will be called, perfectly fine with what I have. I know a few friends doing the same thing even though in the past they upgraded every year, the Activation fee has many annoyed and sticking with older hardware for VZ and AT&T from what I hear.

I can afford to buy a new iPhone every year if I want to do so. But I don't.

I don't replace my primary computer every year, either. Sure, a two- or three-year-old MacBook will be somewhat slower than the latest, greatest models. But it's still completely functional and able to run any software I throw at it.

My iPhone 4 is still a great phone, and I've got a reasonable voice-and-data plan to go with it.

And the money I save can go toward other nice things that I don't already have.

$26 for unlimited calls, text, and 3GB of Data?! Woahhh!
Why can't it be that way over here? :(

Btw, us, the customers, will be the ultimate reason for Apple's downfall.

I don't consider the iPhone (or any Apple product really) for "frugal" people. I consider them premium products for people that can see (and afford) the value of high end products.

iPhones are the exact same price as other phones, ranging down to "free", which is even cheaper than the old Android BOGO deals.

You are likely remembering the days before Apple started making most of its money off of mobile gadgets.
