It's really a surprise because i tested a lot of time with a lot of driver for Mountain Lion but nothing.

Hope Nvidia give us a driver for the GTX 980 and Apple give us the 60Hz soon.

Hi, I sent you an email but want to help everyone while answering you here.

CUDA drivers have nothing to do with anything but CUDA.

We have had large red text above product info with the message that drivers need to be installed first. Hopefully Apple will take a moment from designing new emoji bracelets and include current Nvidia Drivers in the OS. Meanwhile, you will need to install them yourself.

The first page of this thread has links but hasn't been updated with latest.

Once you have installed the infamous "Security Update", then you will be able to use the latest driver from Nvidia.

Please note the large red letters where this is spelled out.

Please read ALL information on all links. You must install drivers for this card.


Anyone using any of the following cards needs to check in before updates:

GTX750
GTX750Ti
GTX780Ti
GTX Titan Black
GTX960
GTX970
GTX980

Due to Apple's insistence on retaining "retro" drivers from more than a year ago in OS X, none of the above cards are included in 10.10.2.

This is especially true for people with unflashed cards as they will see NOTHING, NADA, BLACK SCREEN without these. With EFI versions you will see computer boot but lock or boot-loop.

I will try to come on here and link to our Blog with future updates and best means of updating without causing a complete inability to use computer.

To find out which OS build you have, look in System Profile and click on the main "Software" bar to see "System Software Overview". The top line is "System Version" which will be expressed as "10.10.2 (14C1510)" This shows that you have latest OS and thus need the driver specified for that build.

I updated my Mac Pro 4,1 to the latest security update (10.10.2 14C1510) which has a GT640 and a flashed GTX570. It restarted ok, and I logged in, but it then almost immediately crashed and re-started. I did this a few times, then powered off, replaced the 2 nvidia cards with an Apple 5770, and restarted. This worked, and I was able to use the nvidia System Preferences pane (NVIDIA Driver Manager) to update to the latest driver (343.02.02f03). I shutdown, replaced the 5770 with my 2 nvidia cards, re-started, and all is well again! No update or need to update CUDA (which I use and is working great).

I needed to do the above procedure because I did not do the suggestion from the other thread (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1853748/). For my Mac Pro 5,1 with a GTX970 and GTX750, I first installed the beta NVIDIA drivers that netkas gave the link to, restarted successfully, then used the NVIDIA Driver Manager to update to the latest driver (343.02.02f03), then restarted. All is well! Much easier than pulling out/putting in cards.

As MacVidCards says, it would be a lot easier if either Apple included the NVIDIA drivers, or if NVIDIA let us install the latest drivers on the previous build (14C1509).

Mac Pro 2008 / UHD / CUDA / OpenCL

Hi. I've been reading for hours and hours, but I still don't fully understand this so I'm finally gave in and decided to ask it here.

What video card would be best to upgrade a
• Mac Pro 3,1 / early 2008
• Running OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite
• in order to use it with a UHD resolution monitor (Philips 40")
• at 60 Hz (so it needs a Display Port connector)
• preferably with CUDA support (for CS6 / CC)
• OpenGL would be nice, for Steam games etc.
• Now using a 8800 GT, might want to keep it also to use a 2560x1600 as a secondary monitor, but that is not really needed.

What I don't understand from the first page of this thread: If any card with an nVidia chip works, that means any of the 4K nVidia GeForce cards works.

Yes except the incompatible mobile versions of course. 4K has been available since the GTX6xx series, however the problem lies in the driver support and monitor technology. You may have searched the wrong place for your answers, and this link is probably more appropriate for your case. As long as you use an SST monitor which you do, you can choose either one from your cited link without issues. Just be careful that some of the newer video cards on your list require the web drivers to run. People using the MST monitors have had more issues as discussed in this one.
 
5.25" GPU Power Supply

Hi everyone, I purchased a visiontech 450W external 5.25" PSU and I have a few questions as I know some of the users on this forum use 2 power supplies:

Did any of you have to cut a hole for the psu cables to fit? I mean everything was going good until I realized (stupidly) in the end that the pre-made hole in the 2010 Mac Pro literally can fit only one cable. How did you guys route 8-pin cables through such a small hole if you accomplished this without cutting into the case? I know the 2008 chassis has a larger hole than the 2009 and onwards so I'm just curious if it's possible to do it without cutting a larger hole.

*PS: The 8Pin cables are the ones that came with the external psu so they are sleeved in rubber. Did you guys buy aftermarket skinnier cables, even so I don't see how it can be done without making a second hole in the case or increasing the existing one near the front.

Yes, but I was wondering if the upper slots were fast enough, since they are x4 instead of x16 (if I remember correctly, not near the machine now).

It will work, but if it's anything like mine, it will not work *well*. When I got burned by the security update snafu, I popped my 8800GT in slot 1. It worked, but the fan was insanely loud, and it was noticeably underperforming.

Just switched the 8800 GT card for the GTX6600 MTI, connected the 30" monitor (for now) with a Display Port connector and except for the lack of the startup screen, it works fine! 🙂 I think it's even more silent than the 8800 GT.

mini-test: Scrolling through iPhoto library thumbnails seems much smoother too.

You mean: Don't update to security update 2015-003 1.0 until there is a better version? Or don't try to use the card at all in the upper x4 slot?
 
Hello all. Thanks to this thread, I have an EVGA GeForce GTX 660 3GB working on my MacPro4,1. I've only tried it under Yosemite so far. The only issue I've had is when I installed Security Update 2015-002 without realizing it would disable the NVIDIA driver, but luckily I had screen sharing enabled.

I meant don't patch the security update until there's a matching driver, to avoid the BS that just happened.
 
Can anyone tell me why I'm not getting any resolutions above 1080p? trying to get to 4k.

Mac Pro 4,1 2.26 GHz 8-core (10.10.2)
EVGA GTX 970 4Gb (Web Drivers 343.02.02.f04) HDMI
Sony S9 4K TV with HDMI 2.0

My rMBP with the same cable to the same port on the TV gives me 3840x2160 but its very slow, but the Mac Pro doesn't show any available resolutions beyond 1080p, I assumed the 970 was 4k capable.
 
So after ten days, my GTX 980 macvidcard works (one of the two 6 pins cables was out in fact).
With i could have my 40'' philips in 3840x2160 @ 60z with last Yosemite 14C1514 with last nvidia driver 343.02.02f04
And very important de DP cable must be 1.2 certified...

World is perfect now.

Defective cable.
I have two mac pro and tested the card on the 2.
Yesterday i decided to use the HD5870 cables (same) and it's worked perfectly.

A week ago i said one cable didn't "click" when inserted it, that's the problem.

So I have a Mac Pro 3.1 and I got my GTX 750 TI working. I am running OS X 10.10, NVIDIA Web driver: 343.01.01f03. I would like to upgrade to OS X 10.10.2 (with the dreaded security update) how should I go about this? Do I download the NVIDIA Driver for OS X 10.10.2 and then upgrade my OS then upgrade the NVIDIA Driver from the downloaded file? Will I have to find the old graphics card that originally came with my mac to get an image up on the screen to be able to update the NVIDIA driver after I update my OS? any help would be awesome, thank you!
