Dead wrong. I'd buy two and ditch my and my wife's iPhones if Apple came out with 3G Touches. We don't use the iPhone for talking - we use it for everything else. The phone part is the most useless part of the iPhone to us. I could live without that.

So, you'd rather carry two devices along with you at all times, keeping track of them & worry about having both charged?

If you need a cellphone & have an iPod touch, the natural progression is combine them. It's the same reason why people are buying iPods less & less as their smartphones serve as music players.

I'm not saying 3G iPod touches are dumb (they're great for certain people) but it seems asinine to go from an iPhone to a 3G iPod touch & feature phone.

Surely the majority of people carry a mobile phone right? So why would you want a iPhone without voice and txt capabilities? That just means carrying about two devices which to me seems crazy.... I can't see a big market for this, but I have been proved wrong before

So you don't text? Thats mostly what I use my iPhone for.

There's apps (now) for that (so that people with iTouch and- say- mifi modems can text via 3G). This would just move the mifi modem inside the iTouch.

If this rumor pans out, it would be HUGE for the tweens+ as well as anyone comfortable with Voip and texting apps- especially the crowd making the current iTouch double as an occasional 3G phone/texting device by (also) carrying along a mifi modem.

I sure hope that this it true. I would so love an iPod Touch with 3G connectivity. That why I can use talkatone and make VoiP calls and get an most of the features of the iPhone at 1/3 the price.

This is a dumb rumour, why would apple sell what would effectively be an iphone with voice/sms service disabled!?

Because some people don't use voice/sms but would like to have data access with them at all times??? - for much less cost

tear drop case?

Well that explains the iPhone5 rumors... its not an iPhone 5 , its the iPod Touch 3G. Since the "smaller touch screen tablets are DAO in the market" lets make a smaller one but slightly bigger then the iPhone...for games for kids.. 3g allows Gamecenter anywhere, or a eReader etc..

I bet that is what is tear drop shaped, not the iPhone...

Maybe iPhone 6 will get a sexy tear drop next year... but it would be top heavy like an SUV. Hold that on your shoulder. fall, crash, break, repair $$

The iPod Touch is dead. Apple, let's focus on the iPhone only please.

Nope, I like my iPod Touch thank you very much. It complements my Android phone really well. The number of quality gaming apps available is just astounding. Not to mention the emulators and old-school games you can install once jailbroken.

I hope that the next generation Touch will get the dual core A5 processor as well, maybe even a larger screen as rumored. 3G support is also welcome.

The answer is in the math... the financial math. iPhone = cost of the phone plus cost of a fat contract. A 3G capable iTouch = cost of the iTouch plus cost of the only-when-I-need-3G, data-only (iPad plan-like) contract. The wallet impact differences between the 2 over 2+ years is substantial.

Given the option of 3G or not, I'd opt for 3G. It'd be great to buy a months worth of Wifi for when I need it and not be tied to another phone contract.

Plus with iCloud I can imagine all of Apples devices to at least have a 3G option.

Similarly why would Apple invest so much into the iCloud that won't be fully usable on one of its most popular products?

Why not just discontinue the ipod touch and replace it with a slightly cheaper iPhone? my point was more that the hardware in the ipod will effectively cost a comparable amount to that which is in the iPhone, it's just ridiculous to maintain two product lines that have almost identical hardware under two different brand names.

It would make far more sense to simply discontinue the ipod touch and sell a cheaper lower cost iphone to cover the demographic.

Wrong....use VOIP, and then bye bye iPhone it is rather.

Thanks for the info, shockingly I already knew this. I was specifically referring to inbuilt phone service.

Why would Apple sell a 3G iPad?

For obvious reasons, it's a different device that is more capable than an iphone, a 3g ipod touch is stupid because it would cost almost the same to build as an iphone and provide a slight subset of of the functionality.

Except you don't NEED those things. iMessage alone is texting without sms, not to mention the 3rd party options.

Want to call someone? Use Skype. All you need is data.

Data only SHOULD be where things are going really. SMS and voice plans are are an utter rip off.

In an ideal world sure, though not everyone has an iMessage capable device, VOIP is inconvenient with 3rd party apps and for the same cost as a pure data plan you can generally get more minutes/texts than you know what to do with.

I'd dearly love everything to work over the data connection and merely be charged for the data I actually use, but that isn't yet a reality and it doesn't change the fact that a 3g ipod touch would be a stupid product for apple to bring to market.

Because some people don't use voice/sms but would like to have data access with them at all times??? - for much less cost

Easy, buy an unlocked iphone, get a data plan and use it as you would. The issue here is that a 3g ipod touch would be almost as expensive as an iphone and the saving would not be from the missing voice/sms functionality it'd be from the cheaper parts used in the ipod touch, like the tn rather than IPS lcd.

The only way iPod Touch will be dead if AT&T and VERIZON OFFERED UNLIMITED DATA. Next time if I were you do a little research and find out why iPod Touch will still be around and just because Apple talks about iOS as part iPhone and not as much to the iPod Touch does not also make the iPod Touch dead.

Is it me or is Apple trying to stick 3G on everything? Not much point since WIFI is cheaper, much faster, and much more abundant (unless you live in the woods which I understand).

If someone wants a 3G "ipod thingy" they should get an iPad or an iPhone. 3G requires a contract, too. So why would someone buy a Touch for $299 + contract when they can get the iPhone for the same price which provides more features(the phone)?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-gb) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

What is the point of a 3G iPod touch ... I mean wouldn't you just get an iPhone instead or would you have an iPod touch and a phone ??

Should yes, but as long as we need to rely on the same carriers (who do not want this to happen) things will move slow.

Because this rumor is saying the data plan is iPad like, which is use it when you need it (not continuous). As such, one only pays for the data when they need it, not every month whether they use 3G or not.

People won't pay for a iTouch plus a iPhone-like contract. But I bet some will be all over an iTouch 3G with a "use-it-when-I-need-it" 3G data plan.

So that's where all the new case dimensions came from.

Hope not as I'd rather have a 4"(+) iPhone.

1, I just broke my iPhone.

2, There is nothing 'the carriers' can do. If they do it's market interference and illegal.

3, When people mention 'the carriers' they basically mean At&T and Verizon. thankfully not everybody lives in the states under such a restrictive telephone market. So those two only cater to the US market. Apple is international and will be thinking larger than the both of them together, not because they can, but because they have to. They make more than 'the carriers' combined as well.

4, UK carriers won't care, especially 3.

5, So I eagerly await the September event, if this is true, I don't have to buy the iPhone 5 without contract now.

6, Apple are happy to cannibalise their own devices and markets.

Wow... over and over. Class pay attention...

iPhone + continuously billed contract (whether you use any 3G or not) is substantially more expensive than iPod 3G + "use it only when you need it" data-only 3G plan.
