The thing is I don´t know that much people with iOS devices, I am not on FB and there is no Google Voice in Germany-.-

Ah. Well, then, I guess look up at the stars and imagine a time when the people you know or the country you live don't hold you back!

I'm kidding. We have plenty of problems in the ol' USA. Surely there must be some app. There's always email!

Wish my girlfriend would think like you ;-).

I would LOVE to be able to have a data only device. I wonder how fast voice calling would eat up that data.

I currently pay $45/month at verizon for 300 min/month ($35 with unlimited nights and weekends) with 200 text messages/month ($5). Add in all my special fees and taxes, and I'm up to $45 for very basic service. It hasn't performed well for me lately, either.

Crappy. I've been wanting to dump that plan for some time without spending more. Hopefully this would let me do that. I doubt it, though.

Believe me, man. Voice calling is on the decline. It's rocketing towards messaging and data.
Besides I prefer to leave conversation to more personal face-to-face time when possible. Feels more valued to me.

Agreed. Not sure how people don't see how voice is declining. It's actually something the carriers are fearing.

The majority of people I know text probably 75% of the time and talk 25% of the time.

Texting gives many more advantages (just like email). You can respond to it when you have time. And conversations can go back and forth over a period of time where voice has to take place and that person has to be engaged with you directly.

I see in 2 years that voice calling is something that is more of a thing of the past and we are doing more things like Facetime and texting as the main sources of communication.

Did you see my chart on Page 3. Its ridiculous how much we pay for smart phones.

Most people would be better off with a PAYGO phone. It's ridiculous how much you save with just a Virgin Mobile phone on bills and taxes.

Why wait, get a MiFi card.

If you want a pay as you go data plan for you iPod Touch why wait get a Mifi card and do it now. If you purchase one of these devices outright then you can get some really good pay as you go data plans. You also have the advantage of being able to connect up to 5 devices to your MiFi.:) The big advantage is you can purchase a MiFi from the best provider in your area reguardless who that is.

Why does the US still have a third rate wireless internet infrastructure? Shouldn't there be more hotspots around? Why is Starbucks the only place I can get free wireless internet access? I don't wanna have to drive around looking for a coffee shop and buy overly expensive coffee just so I can surf the net while I'm out of the house.

Voice is decling, but in Europe (where the damn thing started) texting is declining even more! As someone said, iTouch 3G is already possible with mi-fi and many providers (Voda & 3 in the UK) provide on PAYG or contract (£10 or £15). So all Apple is doing is putting the capability in the device rather than having to carry a fob. It's a no brainer and brings the iTouch up to date and iCloud compatible

Looks like an iPad Mini. But I really prefer Samsung's 7" or 7.7" form factor for mini tablets. It fits perfectly in small bags.

Also, it reminds me an iPhone minus voice and sms. Apple is making contract-coupled devices. There is really no hardware or software constraint hindering the inclusion of voice functions. The constraint is mainly imposed by US carriers. Possibly most carriers in the world does not fit the model proposed by Apple + local US carriers.

In Brazil, contract-coupled phones cost the same price of unlocked ones bought in major stores. Only uninformed people buy carrier-customized phones.

Also, earlier 3G data plans were too liberal about using them for talking, so I have a 3G unlimited 600kbps symmetrical data plan with voice feature enabled. I pay for voice calls only when I use it. For the unlimited 3G I pay around USD 40,00 monthly.

In short, I'd like to say that looks like Apple makes their devices targeting the north american reality. That's why it is not as successful worldwide as in the USA (e.g. Nokia and Samsung sell well worlwide).

Ooohh! Ooohh! Me me me! I know.
Okay, becauuuuse 1) in my experience a wifi-only device like a current iPod Touch will lose connectivity when it goes to sleep thus missing notifications and 2) Because the carriers still charge a higher data plan on-contract for a mifi than say, an iPad month-to-month.

Yup, I did see that. That's the reason I don't own a smartphone. I don't want to plunk down a couple grand in costs per year. I'm on wireless all the time! I'm seriously thinking of going to one of those el-cheapo plans at walmart.

Looks like an iPad Mini.

That's funny, because when the iPad came out, people said it looked like a big iPod Touch. ;)

Agreed. Smart Phones are such a rip off. People don't know how much they are getting screwed.

US has the worse $$$ costs associated. Best thing that can happen is TMobile and Sprint get the iPhone and they put out serious plans that compete.
.

Just wanted to say Canadian plans aren't nearly as good as US plans. My iphone = $110/month and its not even close to unlimited. And its a 3 year contract.

I think you guys have much better plans...

So, you'd rather carry two devices along with you at all times, keeping track of them & worry about having both charged?

Absolutely. Battery life on the smart phones just isn't high enough yet, and when the iDevice runs out I still need to be able to make calls. Not to mention the ability to only turn on 3G when I'm traveling and have lots of choice for phone service instead of just the options that come with iPhone. I'd have bought an iPhone years ago if the contracts weren't so expensive.

Why not just discontinue the ipod touch and replace it with a slightly cheaper iPhone? my point was more that the hardware in the ipod will effectively cost a comparable amount to that which is in the iPhone, it's just ridiculous to maintain two product lines that have almost identical hardware under two different brand names.

This actually does make some sense, although I'd describe that as merging the two products instead of discontinuing the touch. Instead of adding 3G to the touch, just sell the new model without a contract (at a price much closer to the Touch) and make it work without the 3G enabled so people can turn it on when needed like the iPad.

Is there really any reason the iPhone is that much more expensive than the touch ($649 unlocked)? Looking at the actual differences in technology, it seems like the phone price is jacked way up because they can get away with it.

If someone wants a 3G "ipod thingy" they should get an iPad or an iPhone. 3G requires a contract, too.

No contract for 3G on iPad. Doing the same with touch is what's appealing.

While I don't disagree I don't think the boundaries are that defined.

You would be very surprised to find out how many Touches are used in business. They replace DayTimers and other things as a compact PDA.

Wrong.

Apple sells about two iPod touches for every three iPhones. The user demographic for the iPod touch is considerably younger (13-24 year olds) versus the iPhone owners (the lucrative 25-49 year old age group). Steve himself has said that the iPod touch is training wheels for the iPhone. Note that iPod touch users actually download more apps than iPhone users do.

While overall iPod sales have declined, today the iPod touch is the biggest selling iPod. The iPod touch generates significant revenue, brand awareness, and customer loyalty. As these younger users graduate from school, get jobs, and sign up for smartphone plans, many of them will migrate to the iPhone.

Is that Canadian dollars? If so, its equally bad as the US. Except the three year contracts. That sucks.
Umm...just wondering, do you guys get anything for the 3 yrs contract?

Do it. You won't regret it and the $$$ you save can be used for lots of other entertainment per month.

When you realize how little you use voice (unless its for your business), you realize how much you are wasting.

Where do you live?

I ask because WiFi is basically non existent around here.

Is it me or is Apple trying to stick 3G on everything? Not much point since WIFI is cheaper, much faster, and much more abundant (unless you live in the woods which I understand).

If someone wants a 3G "ipod thingy" they should get an iPad or an iPhone. 3G requires a contract, too. So why would someone buy a Touch for $299 + contract when they can get the iPhone for the same price which provides more features(the phone)?

This. If the carriers have a brain (often a good question) this is more dangerous to them than a 3G iPod. No revenue at all vs. data-only service.

I purchased my iPhone with little thought of using it as a phone.

It really surprise me how people expends so much money on phones and they don't make any calls at all. People sometimes forgets that phones were meant to be ... phones.

Seriously I looked closely at Touch but it didn't have the right feature set.

Is this the case? My iPad dings all hours of the day while closed. It is a 3G model but the 3G hasn't been activated yet.
