That's not how the 3G data plans work on the iPad.

Ok...well then tell us how they work and how they compare to my statement(s). Don't just make broad claims of how things supposedly work.

And you get warnings at certain % that you are getting close to your data limit.

Nice fear mongering though.

1)How does one get the warning? email? popup on the device?

2)I'd be willing to bet, after seeing how many kids (and adults) ignore warnings and popup boxes and just click OK, that a LOT of people using a Touch's 3G service will go over, and get raked over the coals for usage. I'm sure the end user will learn their lesson after 1 or 2 times, but I'll bet you my house that a high percentage of folks will somehow not see (or care) about the 3G usage and keep on streaming their 6MB songs and their 30MB Youtube vids and downloading their 4MB games and sending emails with 3MB attachments until they get the bill. If I were to get the 3G service, I would sign up for something in the gigabyte range/month or unlimited/month.

I wish there's a way to stop carriers from ripping us off so badly. With telecommunications technology where it is right now, and the infrastructure in place long ago, they hstill charge us over $70 monthly for the basic ability to talk and surf the net with our phones. Makes me sick.

Preach it brother! Don't forget about Google Voice!

Ha, yes and Google Voice! If this happens this is where I exit the contract game. But my wife, no way in hell will she be satisfied with VOIP. So it goes both ways.

Also while I am at it, the price: I bet, just like the iPad, 3G+GPS will be a $130 upsell. So a 3G iPod will be $349. Nothing for the carriers to worry about in their continued press of the subsidized phone addiction of the masses.

You watch, the iPhone 4 update whether it is called iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S is the similar casing device.

The other device is this new iPod Touch Always On, with its tapered case and larger screen and a data only device. Case protector leaks and virtual photos included.

Data only is the future. Wouldn't it be great if you could order a bucket of data from AT&T and another from Verizon, and use them according to who has the best reception or how much overhead you have remaining on your plans?

The iPod Touch Always On could be the rumored "low cost world phone".

Rocketman

I'd buy this if the carriers charged reasonable data charges. £10 for 1GB per month? Outrageous.

The absolute maximum I would pay for 1GB per month is £5. £10 per month should be unlimited data.

How am I making a broad claim. I told you straight up that the way you are describing the 3G plan is not how it works and then told you below how it works which is you get warnings to avoid the issue you describe.

1)How does one get the warning? email? popup on the device?

2)I'd be willing to bet, after seeing how many kids (and adults) ignore warnings and popup boxes and just click OK, that a LOT of people using a Touch's 3G service will go over, and get raked over the coals for usage. You get a warning that will pop up when your iPad 3G has 20%, 10% and no data remaining. The iPad data alert also gives you the option of topping up your data. Users who go over their data limit are hit with either a $15 charge per each 250MB increment on the smaller plan, or a $10 charge per each additional 1GB on the larger option if you continue to use more without topping up.

Its not AT&Ts fault if you ignore the pop up or your kids do.

User error is not their fault...nor is user stupidity.

There is. It's called competition which AT&T and Verizon don't have at the moment with iPhone. Come October with T-Mobile & Sprint getting the iPhone 5 and 4S and you might see us getting better rates.

We're also ripped off on Cable TV..not enough competition and we're paying for services/stations most don't want.

What power does a carrier have to oblige the developers of the already many, many voip and sms apps to dumb down their abilities? The carrier has no way to thwart the use of an app that already exists. They don't monitor what's happening with their data (well, except illegal tethering) and block your phone.

I say they have none. Apple would have to threaten to remove non-compliant apps from the app store, but even they can't delete an app from your iDevice or computer once you've already bought it. And I don't see them making that threat in the first place. Apple doesn't move backward.

new device->new restrictions->no such apps. no biggie for Apple to set that up if they want to. would take some effort to keep it clean, but thats about it.

An iPod Touch 3G 32GB should cost the same as an iPhone 4s 8GB. I hope the price is like 300 o 350 US$. Unlocked, clearly.

Well that explains the iPhone5 rumors... its not an iPhone 5 , its the iPod Touch 3G. Since the "smaller touch screen tablets are DAO in the market" lets make a smaller one but slightly bigger then the iPhone...for games for kids.. 3g allows Gamecenter anywhere, or a eReader etc..

I bet that is what is tear drop shaped, not the iPhone...

Agreed. This seems the best way to reconcile the conflicting rumors of an iPhone 4S and an elusive teardrop-shaped "iPhone" about which no parts have leaked out. It's easy to imagine how someone looking at the hind leg of the elephant (i.e. seeing a leak of a spec or a part that includes 3G) might mistake this for an iPhone, when it is in fact an iPod Touch.

It might also explain the article's sense of a rush to get this out in time for the iPhone 5/4S launch, in the sense that if the teardrop-shaped device isn't released, it might hurt sales of the new model, as some might suspect another model is coming soon. Releasing this iPod Touch simultaneously would effectively debunk that rumor, and those who want an iPhone would buy the iPhone 4S.

people that think Apple will take out front camera and mic capabilities from iTouch are deluded! Above all Apple make good kit and iTouch has traditionally been given top of the class spec! Expect more of the same and to seriously compete with other gaming platforms (even Nintendo 3D), iTouch will be seriously well endowed and will have a bigger screen, more RAM and A5. If it has 3G as well then it continues its domination of the category. The iPhone will get an 8MP camera and if you want device convergence, that's where you go. The best camera is the one you have with you and for many people that is good enough reason to trade up to iPhone. As well as Evernote users who really need high spec camera capability. Plenty of space for both devices and Apple needs to stay ahead of the competion rather than worry about cannibalising niche segments of its own sales. Plenty other niches will emerge to take their place if the kit measures up

I'm still using my fifth gen white 80GB and after five years the battery still gets about 11-14 hours of run time. Two years in a row I tried to switch to the iPod touch but all the ones I bought had defects like light leaking or stuck pixels so I gave up. Apple probably won't release a 128GB version, so if they lower the price of the 64GB unit to $299 I'll try again. I'd prefer sticking to an iPod touch for the next five years instead of a classic.

OK,

Let's put all the Rumors together and see what we get??

Rumor #1 Cheaper IPhone Maybe the 4s
Rumor #2 Cloud Based IPhone
Rumor #3 We see these cases for a Thinner TearDrop Based Larger IPhone
Rumor #4 3G Ipod Touch

We add all those and we get

A larger IPod, with all those features with Voice capabilities, it's like a Cheaper IPhone, but it's Cloud based and More like an Ipod than an IPhone.

Hey, everybody else has a theory, I'm throwing one more that takes a little bit from every previous Rumor.

Y

Wait... what the hell? really? now it really IS an iPhone without a calling app. and you can just use skype anyway. What's the point? hasnt apple been trying to kill off products lately to only have what they need? why make something exactly like the iphone when they're already making a new one of those? whatever apple want's to be idiots just leave the macbook pros alone and i don't really care what you do.

Once they jailbreak this thing, I wonder if they flash it with iPhone firmware and use a regular sim card.

Is this really possible?

Anyway, I like the idea of 3g in an iPod Touch, too, but is there any possibility to receive SMS on the iPod Touch yet?

Might work

This might be great for countries where iPhone is not officially on a carrier. This way people can still use iMessage, Skype, Google Voice etc. Plus with iCloud, I feel like Apple needs everything to be connected to internet (which is the future, either if you don't like that)

Yeah, but will it have iPhone's camera?

Currently, iPod touch camera is absolutely rubbish.

Can't ditch my iPhone just yet (yes, because of the camera). And yes, I do have a DSLR.

Agreed! The best camera is the one you have with you!!! And an 8MP camera for iPhone 5 is a HUGE differentiator so I can't see people not wanting to buy this. Which makes me think Apple will release iTouch 3G because iPhone 5 still would represent a decent up-spec

The iPod Touch is dead. Apple, let's focus on the iPhone only please.
Dead wrong. I'd buy two and ditch my and my wife's iPhones if Apple came out with 3G Touches. We don't use the iPhone for talking - we use it for everything else. The phone part is the most useless part of the iPhone to us. I could live without that.

I would as well. This would be a much cheaper alternative. The wireless carriers can't be happy about this as it is the first stone removed for the destruction of talk plans and everything being data only.

The ripoff part of my iPhone right now is the voice service that gets no use but is much more expensive then the data use

iMessage. Google Voice. WhatsApp. Google+. FB Messenger. You have been awashed, you're welcome. Go forth and spread the word.

So you don't text? Thats mostly what I use my iPhone for.

Imessage baby

What's the point? Given the price scheme of the iPad, the 8GB touch with 3G would theoretically cost $400, which is absurd. If I wanted cell service on my touch, I'd get an iPhone.

The thing is I don´t know that much people with iOS devices, I am not on FB and there is no Google Voice in Germany-.-
