Here's my opinion, plastic for the computers, and metal for the phones since you're phone is something that you have with you pretty much all the time, you don't want it to scratch.

In my view, scratches on the back are bound to happen, and they are on the back, not the focal point of the device. Now if it were to be a plastic-based screen that was prone to scratches then that would be different, but it is not. Granted, having had two iPod touches, I can certainty say that the glass that they use is not scratch proof, I have had a chip in my first one (although I am not sure where, I think I may have dropped it), and now two scratches in the second one, one scratch from when my friend took it for a weekend when I accidently left it in school (even though I left it in a locked room that only me, my friend and two teachers had a key to), and the second from when I dropped my keys in my pocket once, pulled out the iPod right away and there was a scratch.

What happened to the "Apple supports greener products scheme"

I guess when you try to tell the phones for $199 you don't care about how green they are :)
hello blackberry bold!

hmm...still, I would rather have a phone that looks like metal and a "texture that makes it so resistant to scratches" than a shiny, fingerprint magnet, cheap looking backing such as the LG voyager. If apple made it with a matte plastic, I think I might have bought it. Plus, the matte finish will give you extra grip.

Funny I never had reception issues with my original. The metal back was GREAT. This new plastic job is LAME! YOU ARE DEFINITELY A FANBOY if you can't see that. I have the original and I was nothing but happy with it when it came out. Great design with great innovation. This new one though lacks in so many ways. Another poster seems to make the most sense when he said that this new 3G is clearly a 1.0 version phone and the original with the metal back was a beta. PLASTIC SUCKS!

I have thought that all of the products that apple have made in the past couple of years were great! This one, it seems to be a step behind in technology as material wise goes.

Compare your reception to anyone else with an AT&T phone and you'll see the difference.

And also, for the love of God, quit calling people fanboys. It's annoying, douchenozzle behavior. Grow up.

Listen im only calling it as I see it. This new model reeks of BASE model syndrome. Look at the accessories. It doesn't even come with a dock just some very cheap very un-apple power plug. PLEASE. The only hope is that this is in fact the starter iPHone and something much better with all of whats missing is around the corner.

I thought the definition of a fanboy was someone who cared a lot about little details, like what material it's made out of.

In other words, someone like you. So it seems odd for you to be using it as an insult, is all I'm saying.

yep, i am one of those disappointed ones. see for yourself courtesy of ilounge:

Please copy and paste this picture with arrows pointing to scratches you see on this phone. For all we know this could be just some immitation back anyway. Apple told us there was a shiny back on the phone. Now everyone assumes it will definitley be a scratch magnet. No one has actually had the chance to feel the material just yet.

The first generation iphone back wheather you agree or not was so far from scratch proof anyway and lets not forget about that damn silver ring that stiil exist on the front. That thing just pisses me off.

The same power cable that the top-end iPods come with, yes?

You're getting more phone for half the bucks. If it means that much to you, go buy a Vaja Case and a dock and you'll still come in under the price of the original iPhone. You sound like a petulant child.

He's right, the Dock is no longer included. It just comes with a USB cable, as the iPods do.

The more that I think about it, Apple should have probably released two versions of the iPhone Monday, this one, and one that had a different look with a metal back and somewhat different design with maybe one or two smaller features that make it a more advanced phone, and sell it at the prices that the original iPhone is at now. When you compare each side, the older iPhone looks much better than the iPhone 3G. I'm not even really sure where to stand on this now, but with the exception of GPS and 3G, there are not really any new features that are exclusive to the iPhone 3G.

not saying you are wrong, but why is it still listed on the website and where is this new info coming from?

JML! Thank you! I am not hating on apple im just being objective. I love my original! It IS a great advancement in both design and technical innovation but this new 3G is CLEARLY a lesser model. I don't understand how that consensus isn't unanimous at least with current iPhone owners. LIke I said before the only thing that would make sense is if they drop a proper iPhone 2.0 on us before the holidays. Cheers!

i don't see scratches on the image. i'm simply pointing out the possibility of getting them. people who manhandled this one probably didn't have time or bother testing the plastic.

i do my own test by purposely making a line or mark with my fingernail and see if it leaves a scratch. also, the lighting on the image is "flourecent" (i hope i spelled that right). you need a very bright incandecent light shined on the surface to see the fine scratches.

as i mentioned earlier, if this has the same material they used for the sony PSP, then i am ok with it. the PSP does not scratch easily by cleaning it...it's pretty tough and you can actually maintain it. :)

They offer a Dock separately, but if you read the 'What's included in the box' section there's no longer a dock listed there.

It says dock connector to USb cable for "In The Box". Is that not a dock connector?

There's a difference between a USB cable with a connector and the Dock itself. The dock allows the phone to stand up.

It's entirely aesthetic, but some people like it.

eh im not worried about the plastic back

i would think it was more smudge prone than scratch prone.

The bottom of the old iphone was plastic and i never got scratches on that...i mean i plopped that thing into a dock constantly (granted it's not shiny)
