Buddy bought the new iPod touch two days go at radio shack, didn't buy any protection plan with it. Ysterday he was running about and the screen just shattered after falling out of his pocket.

I'm wondering perhaps how much apple will charge to repair it? The screen itself and touch screen still works but the glass is completely broken, looking like a spider webbing of broken glass.

Either 99, 149 or 199 depending on GB.

this makes no sense. all three use the same front glass, no?

Well technically they don't just replace the glass, they give you a refurbished unit. iPads are all differently priced as well for Out of warranty replacements.

Yeah but Apple can't replace the screens in-store (it would take too much time or just not possible like the current iPods). Once they are fixed, I guess Apple has to sell them off as refurbs ... or as more replacement iPods.

I guess its just a pointless way for Apple to get more money.

Always, ALWAYS just go to an Apple store and ask what your options are, before you do anything else. Depending on their mood, time of year, customer attitude, and moon phase, they might just give your pal a replacement, no cost.

yep

If he bought it with a credit card, don't they offer some sort of protection on products for 30 days or something along those lines? Or am I on drugs?

Yep you might be on drugs. Sounds like good stuff too.

Option 1: If he bought with AMEX, go with AMEX and repair.
Option 2: Ask apple to see what can be done.
Option 3: fix the iPod touch.

Next time, tell him to buy a case and he needs one like otterbox. iPod touch is not really meant to be used for jogging. Honestly, it is his fault that he did not take care of it enough, so he should be ready to pay for premium to fix it.
