For previous iPhones that I've purchased directly from Verizon, I've needed to enter my account zip code and last 4 of SSN for it properly activate when it's first turned on, whether a Verizon or other carrier SIM is inside the phone. After this first time, this information doesn't need to be entered ever again for that phone. I don't think this is needed for Verizon iPhones purchase directly from Apple.

No, same for Verizon phones ordered through Apple when pre-ordered. Not so when purchasing through a walk-in

Does this mean the phone for the rest of its life is going to request this verizon account info even if it's fully paid off?

You will need to enter friends account info if bought under that. Just keep hitting next then will be okay. Will need just first time.

I have never had to enter my zip and SSN with iPhones purchased directly from Verizon. I just take the old sim out of my previous iPhone and insert into new iPhone. Phone activates without any input from me. Always use the old sim if activating new phone on the same line. The old sim is active. The reason why you have to enter zip and SSN is because you activated the new sim card in the new iPhone.

The Verizon iPhone X has to be active before popping other sims in.
I handed one of my Verizon iPhone X to my friend, he inserted the T-mobile sim and turned it on.
The phone stuck in the activation screen with my phone number.
This is categorically false. I bought my iPhone X on my Verizon account, popped my AT&T SIM card in, and turned it on. I was able to complete the activation without using my Verizon phone number.
