i read this on engadget earlier and sorry to sound like an idiot, but...
what exactly is so great about this/VOIP? i thought VOIP like vonage and stuff was just clearer than normal landlines and used wifi to connect. so what's the benefit for the iphone?

Well, if you have friends who live abroad (like I do), get them to get skype or whatever you have and then it's free (as it's skype-to-skype not skype-to-phone for example).

I talk to my girlfriend in America every night for 5 hours ish - couldn't do it without VOIP.

So this basically lets you make free calls over the net then... And do Skype and MSN voice chats... COOL! To bad this wont work on the iPod Touch :(

Does i only make calles via WIFI? that sux, I want to be able to make voip calls via via my phone/isp provider.

I plan to use ONLY a data plan, but they charge 1996 prices for calls to mobile phones with this plan. I hope to find a VOIP provider that has resnoable prices to swedish mobile phone providers.

I believe you can still have text chats like in MSN through the iPod/iPhone keyboard. I think anyway lol, you can in all the desktop versions of the programs.

OK cool, I might install it for that then, as a native MSN app will be good, cant use the VOIP on my iPod Touch though :(

Installed this app and its amazing!

For some reason cant connect to my skype account but msn works a treat!

I think a must have app...

Is MSN good? Can you do most of the stuff you can do with the dekstop version of most MSN clients? I have been needing a native MSN client on my iPod Touch for a long time.

I would test it myself but I have no WiFi access ATM, and internet Sharing is broken like always.

It looks like it supports basic text chatting, adding buddies (but not deleting them or blocking them at this time?), and a whole ton of services. But not much else at this point. It seems to support voice chat on services other than Skype, but I haven't played with that.

I think right now, it's most compelling point is that it's a multi-client installed IM app that can receive IMs in the background, which is something we didn't really have before....

OK, cool.

We could with Apollo, but that sucks, very buggy.

is this app not showing up in installer for anyone else? i'm running a jailbroken 1.1.4. i've refreshed the source list multiple times and it's not there.

yah so i got this app.. but it dont work over edge....anyone no if its supposed to or not. it works on wifi but it always says reconecting on edge.

This guy doing the video is a legend!

Apple should get him on the case to do the official videos, I'm sorry Bob, but you're just not as showbiz…
:D

I tested this out yesterday, just made a account with Fring and set up my MSN account, then whenever I went to my buddy list it crashed!

Why not just get an iPhone instead of hoping Apple makes a mic for it(they won't why would the risk iPhone sales). Get an iPhone, simple....

It doesn't have to be Apple, some of the best iPod add-ons are made by Griffin for example.

What's this business about a Skype "phone number?"

Hi everyone,

I'm a complete newbie to Skype---just installed it for the first time and tried to make Fring work on my iPhone. I've got two accounts (with different Skype names) for my family going just fine on computer to computer. But how do I get free Skype to work with Fring? There doesn't seem to be a place in Fring where I can call a Skype Name, only a "number" via the dialer. When I go to the Skype page and sign up for a number, it wants to charge me $18 for 3 months!!! I thought Skype VoIP was FREE??

Am I doing something wrong?

(AIM chatting is working just fine with Fring...just not Skype)

Do you have these Skype contacts on your contact list? Don't they show up as logged in on the buddy list in Fring?

Nope, surprisingly, they don't show up as logged in. Also, the computers running those other accounts on Skype software do not see that I'm logged in on Fring.

After about 15 minutes, sometimes if I try to call the name logged in on Fring, it will ring and say "call refused," and the status will update (on the computer) to show online. But I still cannot place a call or send a text. But I know the connection exists, because the instant I exit Fring on the iPhone, the status on the computer drops back to offline.

Weird, eh? Some kind of proxy/other bug?

(The contacts DO show up right away when they are logged into AIM or MSN, but never when they are logged into Skype.)

Well....now it seems to be working okay. I have found that in order to get it to work, I have to exit Fring, then re-launch, and then I finally show up as online on my friends' lists.

But it's pretty buggy....crashes quite a bit, audio quality is not superb (though the latter is perhaps due to my miserable 512k upstream speed).

I'm sure the final version will be fantastic!

Yes, please add speakerphone support!
