Facebook is absolutely a monopoly. It is scary that 1 company owns 4 of the top 5 social media/chat platforms: Facebook, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram. If any company needs to have antitrust brought down on them it is Facebook.

And that is a major reason I am not now and never have been a member/user of any of them.

Its about time they broke Facebooks monopoly and that something else, something better comes along.

On the other hand, should Snapchat have some kind of exclusive right to create a product in that format? I assume they didn’t (and hopefully can’t, IMO) patent the format.
They probably can't patent that, but it would be a different matter if they found records showing Facebook planning or threatening to copy them.

Recently the chat logs over the IG acquisition were leaked. The founders seemed to know what was up, thinking Zuckerberg might enter "destroy mode" if they refused.

None of them are US companies.
Meanwhile many of the smaller companies bought up by the larger ones have been foreign created.
Apple alone is probably worth more than all of those combined. Of course not all tech companies are in the US, but the US is where it's at, and I really just mean Northern California and a select few other parts.

Capitalism at its finest. The American way. Then when you get too big and powerful the gov't comes after you to shut you down.

Yes, what on earth could be the downside of having monopolies? 🤷‍♂️

It won’t be long until same lawsuit are files against Microsoft, Apple and the rest.
Yes and then they'll come for the mom and pop shops, then you and me, and finally the blue sky, am I rite?

I know I'm a "boomer" now and all, but I still can't believe how social media changed our lives forever. I remember actually calling each other, making plans to meet at the mall or whatever, and keeping track of one another by simply agreeing to be somewhere at a given time. I'm not saying social media is bad, I'm just blown away at the pace of change. As soon as I began to accept "it's just the way the world works now," I come to realize lawsuits, antitrust behavior, misinformation campaigns, and etc have changed the game AGAIN.

Ok, I'll go back under my rock now.

I just want Facebook et. al. to be legally responsible for anything posted on their App.
If you are defamed, bullied, libeled on Facebook, go after Zuck (Dumb ****)

Now hopefully they can take care of the App Store monopoly/duopoly (whatever you want to call it)

Users want sideloading, developers want a way to publish apps that Apple blocks for whatever consumer-unfriendly reason...

As much as I hate FB I am with them on this one "crushed or bought out its rivals in an attempt to get rid of competition." is how capitalism works, it works by competing against the other until you destroy it. iPhone and Android destroyed Nokia and Blackberry. Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo destroyed Sega. Japanese car manufacturers lead to the demise of the American car. Bluray took HD-DVD down and VHS took Betamax down.

If the gov. has a problem then they should put regulations saying that once X amount of companies left in the market no 1 can buy the other

eeehhh... not exactly.

While I hate facebook and wish them and their business model death, none of Facebook products is a necessity. People choose to use them because they want to. It does not control anything really, and in addition there are other free -and open source- alternatives.

Instagram = Pixelfed
Whatsapp = Telegram, Signal, Element
Facebook = Diaspora, Freindica, VK

Facebook products are a "want" - like a toy- its not a necessity or a need

Ha! Sounds like these big companies are after the small fish. Killing the competition.

Facebook is always playing it dirty. Unethical business model.

I hope Facebook gets fined and they actually get to pay for it this time around.

Problem is, Facebook can afford to pay for its crimes. Their stock value is near all-time highs. Sad but true.
