Its a nice idea to have a display as a mirror as when the display is off, the mirror still can be a nice part of the decor compared to a black screen stuck on the wall which serves no other purpose. It makes sense to try to turn the mirror into a display, and this looks like a pretty nice example with a pretty cool wow factor being that it looks like an Apple product.

Whether people need or want it or if it serves some purpose that isn't already served by a phone or wearable, I dont know, but maybe it is more convenient than a device.

Would be neat to have smart panels in the house sometime in the future.

I'd imagine this one would say several phrases :D
  • Ooooo arent your just gorgeous
  • My you are the thinnest you've ever been
What else would it say?

User: Mirror, mirror, on the wall......
Mirror: um, NO.

Hands free Siri would be great for that one:

Mirror mirror on the wall, order me hookers and the best coke I could snort.

Except for the (to me) sad use of regular app icons, it reminds me of the mirrors in Corning's Day Made of Glass concept videos.

The mother using one in the bathroom at around 00:35 in the first one:

And the daughter using one on her closet mirror at 00:30 in the second one:

Or outside of concepts, the actual 55" commercial usage transparent window and mirror OLED displays you can buy from Samsung for about $2200.

Forget carrying around a small screen all the time; if these companies have their way, we'll be surrounded by screens in the future :)

"A web developer and graphic designer has created a fully functioning touchscreen "Apple Mirror", offering a reflective look into an imagined future where Cupertino builds smart screens for the home."

Interesting concept. Some variation, sans mirror, may be lurking down the road.

I spend maybe 2-3 minutes in front of the mirror every day. I just need it to warn me about appointments—especially early ones, remind me to take my pill, and tell me the weather. But I can do all that in five seconds with a swipe down in the today view on my iPhone. I don't need to watch Netflix in my bathroom mirror. I wish people would stop thinking they need to be entertained at every possible moment. We already have smartphones! Those are enough distraction. It's nice to just be at peace for part of the day without a device in my face.

How would Jony make it thinner though? :p

Jony would separate the mirror from the frame and connect them with a $99 a lu min i um dongle.
Practically magic.

I love how everyone imprints their habits onto everyone else. I spend most of the day doing my job away from a TV. I use the time in the morning listening to the morning news, catching up on the previous day's events, while I do other things which precludes holding and reading from my iPad or iPhone -- the iPhone which is sitting on its charger anyway so as to be ready for the day when I walk out of my house. Many of my morning activities take place in the kitchen and bathroom. I have a TV in the living room, streaming my local news channel, and a small LCD TV sitting on a table on my bedroom, streaming out of synch with my main TV. When I'm in the bathroom, I can't see the screen, and depending on the news story, have to step out to look. I would have a TV in the bathroom except for space. So this would be ideal to hang on the wall and do double duty. in fact I might get a second one for the bedroom, to free up that table space from a device that only does one thing, and replace my dressing mirror that only does one thing. A mesh network could drive the video on them so the program would be in sync.

For many this is an ideal solution -- it saves space, it puts a persons visual attention naturally where it needs to be for activities at hand, and eliminates a black screen that serves no other purpose when not in use, allowing greater design and decorating options, and reducing unnecessary clutter.

Apple's solutions involve using my hands, keeping track of the devices, and taking my phone and watch off their chargers in the morning, not that the Apple Watch could even stream my morning news. Apple TVs have to be individually tuned for each dedicated device they're connected to, and can't be synced. So this is a big step forward in home info-tainment ergonomics. People laugh at smart refrigerators, but they serve a similar purpose, utilizing available space in the most efficient manner for the way people lead their lives. Two mirrors and a refrigerator integrated into my Apple devices would go a long way to reducing clutter and simplifying my life while serving my daily routine.

Anyone else think about how realistic interacting with this would be with such high reflection? Yes it's a mirror, but people here have been complaining for years over the lack of a matte mac

Looks like a pain in the butt.

That's not that bad. I know many white females that luvz that know what i mean?? I eanna buy thiz mirror 4 my friendz where can i buy it?

Not going to happen. People don't replace their mirrors every 3 years with another disposable mirror. Cool it is, outside the box it is, its just not in Apple's core competency of making products to fill landfills.

I love it and i know many ppl who would buy it now. I don't care bout the price

I'm surprised by some of the negative comments. It's not perfect and everyone has some valid points but I love this idea, especially the first video above. When done right, these are essentially multipurpose interactive displays. Hardware could be updated very easily and cost effectively:

- Many Smart TV's have upgrade kits for future processor/hardware upgrades
- Simply run the necessary cables to one central hub.

Panel pricing would settle as the market dictates, much as OLED panels that were once five figures.

When I built my homes I worked with a few designers and developed touch screen smart panels as mirrors in some of my bathrooms, almost exactly as the video. I can watch live TV in a window placed anywhere I want, daily reminders, applications, etc. and the interface is voice, motion, and touch screen driven. The antiglare glass has a smudge and steam proof coating and the few times it needs a good cleaning a microfiber cloth and glass cleaner work perfectly.

These are brilliant ideas, especially the glass windows that change privacy levels and more. I wouldn't dismiss these ideas, they need work yet they would be brilliant as interactive panels for connecting to a central hub for home automation, televisions, communication as video and voice calls, etc. This is a brilliant idea.

That's fine, but most people use their devices. Having single-purpose and very expensive devices in every room is not only wasteful but not likely to gain much market traction until the panels and computers running them cost barely more than a mirror itself (such as Tesla's new solar roof tiles that look and cost similar to a slate roof). Don't expect this to happen anytime soon from Apple. I mean this is the same company that considers the Apple TV to not be a serious product segment and they sell tens of millions of them. They're even rumored to be halting production of the Airport and have stopped making standalone displays. IDK why anyone in their right mind thinks they're going to start making smart bathroom mirrors. Not gonna happen, lol.

Nice idea. Usefulness limited. If i'm standing in front of my mirror I could be at my iPad, desktop or iPhone and have mobility.
But it has its uses

The only place that I would find a use for this is in the bathroom. Open a news app while I'm brushing my teeth, reviewing my calendar for the day, checking the weather. However for an estimated $800-1,300 the cost wouldn't justify the purchase. Cool concept though.

When you started that sentence I thought you were some weirdo who wanted to watch yourself poop and get some touchscreen productivity in at the same time. The rest of us seem to settle for laptops or phones for that purpose.

You can tell this is a tech website, most of the people here (i.e. single blokes sat in front of their computers in their underpants) are unlikely to have wives or girlfriends or daughters who spend literally hours in front of the mirror getting ready, and this has only got longer since the advent of distractions like the smartphone. To combine a phone with a dressing table mirror would be a massive time saver in my house!

People used to have phones that where 25+ years and not replace them. So that's a bit of a lame argument.

And you could prevent that by just having the mirror eeeehm mirror your phone and let the phone do all the work.

For all those that want Siri to smarten up, how much data are you prepaired to share? Just like google? You can have all the smartness you want, but in the end they own the data and your sorry behind.

Or they would never leave the bathroom again!
