That plug is so big, it most likely will not work with most cases. Add to that the fact that you can't charge the device while listening to music, this is ridiculous. I've never minded most of Apple's design decisions, but this one, if true makes me rethink upgrading my phone at the moment. I'm not interested in buying crappy bluetooth headphones, I already have an excellent wired pair. Hopefully Apple has some good surprises awaiting for us.

Bad idea to remove the ubiquitous 3.5mm audio jack that works on laptops, desktops, automobiles, music players, mobile phones, even the in-seat audio connections on airlines.

Millions of people have spent good money on high quality headphones and earbuds that use the 3.5mm standard to be left out in the cold.
Meh.

I'm ready for better. Then again I already own Lightning headphones, because I care about audio quality.

I think the infuriating thing isn't that Apple is eliminating the headphone jack in itself, it's that the alternative is in no way an advancement on the current standard technology. While it would be total B.S. to say that the introduction of USB C is illegitimate since everyone uses USB 2.0, for example, I have yet to see ANY advantage to eliminating the phone's headphone jack. That's why it's so maddening.

People were mad at a lack of cd drive in the macbook pro, but guess what? It still sells. The App store is the new norm, even on windows pc's. 3.5mm is outdated. We are moving to a wireless world. Everyone wants wireless charging now, and wireless bluetooth speakers. Your precious 3.5mm headset manufacturer will make a superior bluetooth/lightning version of your headset with better quality, more features, a lighter design, without pesky cords getting in the way. Guess what? You'll buy them and forget 3,5mm even existed telling all your friends they need to move on. Innovation is taking over. **** or get off the pot.

For users there isn't. For Apple they get to save money and effort by skipping the required hardware in an iPhone, and forcing users to either buy adapters or a (potentially) overpriced pair of their upcoming BT headphones.

There are good reasons and situations to use BT headphones, but there are also plenty of good reasons to be able to use wired phones too. When sitting down on a long journey wireless isn't a benefit, but the ability to charge your phone while you are listening is. Next will be the iPad.

That's going to be great improvement for long-haul flyers.

"..turned up in our office.." ?

OK, I'm calling fake. As in, not an Apple product, but a 3rd party manufacturer has created these.

I'm keeping my money on wireless EarPods being in the box with the next iPhone.

If true, this will be the first time I don't opt for the newer Apple product and actually be happy that I'm saving money. My 5S is on its last leg and was looking forward to the 7. If the 3.5mm jack is officially gone, I would have no problem saving money and getting a 6S.
How is your 5S on its last legs except for maybe the battery being depleted? My 5S is still fast on iOS 9, nothing has gotten worse with time.

I wouldn't be bothered if they removed the 3.5mm port in favor of a usb-c but not for a ****** lightning port that will only work on apple devices.

Also other than thinness what else is the reason for the removal of the 3.5mm port? I was thinking waterproofing but other phones still managed to make a waterproof phone and kept the 3.5mm port.

Any chances we can plug these in to the back of the new Magic Keyboard to listen to music on the Mac? Although that would be really annoying have a cable coming down straight over the keyboard. Could run it underneath but that could make it wobbly depending on the height of the feet on the keyboard. I don't have one so I'm not sure.

If my logic is right this could fray and damage easily like the Lightning cables from Apple. Or it could be worse because this has thinner wiring. If I'm wrong then this proves that Apple intentionally designed the Lightning cable, to break easily so they can make more money. If you tell me otherwise then it's either you're blind fanboy or have a personal interest with Apple. Since I used them from iPhone 5 to 6S Plus same problem every year. We all have iPhones at home and I'm not the only person who has the problem and I have friends that has the same problem. My 1st Gen. iPhone 30 pin cable and old color iPod Nano is still in my garage. It's still intact and no indication of possible fraying.

Yep. These will be included in the box.

Lightning to 3.5mm adapter? $19-$29
Wireless EarPods? $129-$149

Waterproofing? Included with the iPhone 6SE. Worth it.

This^ Seems very likely this will be the options provided with price points.

Apple removed the 3.5 inch floppy disk. They're doomed!
Apple removed the CD/DVD drive. They're doomed!

I think we might want to wait to see how this all turns out after the phone is actually released before we all panic. On the other hand we seem to like to panic early. Go ahead and panic. Samsung will be copying Apple again in 18 months or so.

Please explain to Samsung that they actually need to eliminate the 3.5mm headphone jack to waterproof their phones. They seem not to be on your wavelength.
Well, they did have problems for years with their "waterproof" phones not actually being waterproof. So…

I'm perfectly happy losing the old TRS port. I expect within a few years the other manufacturers will have followed suit. Eventually as battery and wireless technologies improve the whole concept of having to plug in a listening device is going to seem antiquated.

By the time battery tech has evolved to that point you will be dead.

Batteries are the weakest point of all portable devices and despite the endless reports about radical new technologies (I'm looking at you graphene) the consumer end has barely inched forward in a decade. The usual solution to battery capacity is just to make them larger.

So enjoy losing a port, you can enjoy having maybe 24 hour charge capacities in your hearing aids. Until then have fun sitting at the wall outlet.

As long as I can use them on my iPP also, and only have to carry around 1 set of earbuds, I'll survive this move by Apple.

The same could be said for floppy disks.
