If there had been any indication that he needed his machine, my post would have been skewed differently.

people can do what they want with their money!!! It is not for you to decide:mad:

Y'know that old saying "if you don;t have anything nice to say.... your name is Tallest Skil:cool:

Why? The OP can buy any computer he wants. I bet a lot of Mac Pro owners don't use theirs to near the full potential.
I would also bet nobody with an Murciélago actually needs one of those either. If you've got the money, then buy whatever the hell you want. I know if I could blow the cash on a Mac Pro, I sure would.

Change your desktop image from a still (JPEG) to a movie. Might be interesting to set up so as to watch it for awhile, but you'll have desires for those clock-cycles someplace else after awhile.

Here's one tool to do it with: DVDesktop 1.1.2; there's probably others.
-hh

Interesting. Thanks!

Now back on track:
Create a 100GB file and open it with nano; see how many minutes it takes for it to crash (I've actually had to edit 8GB textfiles.. Boy am I glad I had plenty of memory and fast network storage)

Ha! Nice. I've actually done something similar before by accident. I was ssh-ed into a Linux web server when I accidentally opened a large binary file with nano instead of the text config file I meant to open (I was a little too eager with my tab auto-completion). The server stayed rock solid, but it sure crashed my session pretty badly!

Hope: I would now be able to play Bioshock on my Mac
Truth: Nope... Using Windows 7 x64 and the Bootcamp 2.1 drivers it crashes pretty much immediately. Bummer...

A Mac version of Bioshock is rumored to be on the way. Although it might be of little consolation for you if you've already bought the Windows version: http://www.macworld.com/article/138126/2009/01/bioshock.html

I read the first couple of things and immediately thought, "He has no clue what that machine is for and doesn't need it."

Although I am going to do what I said... just because it will be possible. :D

And then go back to real work.

Speaking of real work, will my new Mac Pro be able to run 2 instances of calculator at once? Sometimes I like to keep a running total of how many times I've been flamed on a new forum on one instance while adding up my office staffs' Chinese take-out order on the other. I'd be willing to pause my DVD background while adding up the lunch order if I needed to...

You know Jobs and company were in a meeting when they realized "Hey, this is the best porn viewer ever!" with regard to the iPhone. They might not acknowledge it, but everyone knows it happened.

LOLLL, I can see everyone at the conference room sitting on their $2000 executive chairs squirming and looking at each other with the incentive of knowing that pr0n is their priority!! HEHEH

load windows vista 64 on one of the other three harddrives you are jonesing to put in, load up a kickin windows game and go to town.

the most fun you could have is going out to owc and ordering a ton of ram and put it in when you get it.

benchpress?
makes a great doorstop, although it takes up a LOT of room.

run benchmarks (everyone likes doing that)

Lies. You won't be able to do that on the Gainestown Mac Pro. Not even Blue Gene can handle that right now.

*sigh* you are right...

but thats what you get for wishful thinking i suppose.

rumor has it that you will be able to surf the internet AS WELL AS view dvd movies on your system by the time sandy bridge hits. they are just rumors though.

Wait a minute... What's the internet??

a magically world...such as disneyland and michael jacksons ranch all rolled into a virtual reality like place.

to the OP. it is a silly topic, so i am glad you arent getting as "hurt" as others can get on replies. if i had a new mac pro at my door... the first thing i would do would be syncing up my mobileme.

then i would have a software install evening.

also...picture and post on macrumors community section.

Said what I was thinking

If there had been any indication that he needed his machine, my post would have been skewed differently.

Who are you to decide what he needs the machine for? Just because he didn't provide you with an adequate amount of information as to what the primary function of the machine would be?!

But this is Tallest Skil you're talking about, all his posts are angrily sarcastic.

I agree . . . It seems that Tallest Skil is in a race to make the first post in most threads, and is generally rude, degrading, judgemental, or not contributing anything positive to the thread.

Which leads me to the question, what do you need your Mac Pro for? Seems all you do is spend time on MacRumors posting to threads . . . .

Perhaps you've never heard the saying, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." But, hey, whatever keeps your post count up . . .

EDIT: Just read Tallest Skil's profile . . . 19 years old . . . it all makes sense now . . .

To the original poster . . . CONGRATS! I love my Quad Core Mac Pro. I don't do any serious editing on it now, but bought it for the pure upgrade -ability. Fantastic machine, enjoy!

Some of us buy Mac Pro's not for the 8Core Power but for the internal storage and RAM possibilities...

I fell in that 'mid-level tower' group that doesn't have a product, but I'll never complain about having to cough up more $$ for a MacPro.

Right on - I don't use my Mac Pro for anything CLOSE to rendering video or doing "real work" on it. I do use Photoshop and Lightroom, but that's (at least for the time being) strictly for my own enjoyment and not to make money.

I came from the PC world (thank god I'm away from that now), where you had nearly unlimited choice of what to put in your PC tower. I don't like all in one machines that much, and no mid-tower from Steve, so the Mac Pro was really my only option.

I had the cash for it (plus an association discount), so I grabbed one and couldn't be happier with it :)

All I know is when the little pip squek dog (like a yorky) is hanging out all curious about the big shiny object, don't accidently knock it over on him  Vet bills are expensive for broken legs... Don't ask me how I know and really don't ask my wife

I do HD video rendering and video conversions etc... I have yet to find anything that will 100% stress the CPU's...

Sometimes surfing dem modern flashy sites with Safari does make me feel like I'd need a Mac Pro just to access properly this thing you call the 'Internet'.

PS and Lightroom/Aperture etc. most definitely qualifies for a MP.

My 24" iMac chokes somewhat on my collection of photos, either because of slow disk, insufficient GPU or too slow a processor.
IOW, I'm looking longingly at a MP.
Anyone who tells me I shouldn't have a MP unless I use it to 100% deserves a Mighty Mouse and a riser card up where the sun doesn't shine.

I have yet to see an argument in which playing the age card is an intelligent idea.

AutoCAD (prior to that, Rhinoceros and Blender), Xcode, KICAD, CS4 (maybe 5 later), and Logic Studio, simply because I like to write music.

Happy? I'll also have a fairly large media library and I want to be able to have an internal disk backup for all of my files as opposed to a Drobo or something of that nature.

I'm not some kid looking for the cheap thrills of having the fastest workstation on the planet just to brag to my friends and play Crysis for the pretty.

I'm a computer engineering major with a concetration on hardware systems design.

Right on :)

It annoys me no end people who have this thing that because Apple have consumer level and 'pro' level products, 'pro' products the sole domain of professionals who use their computers for work (eg, creative design etc). What's wrong with buying a Mac Pro just because you want one? Same logic applies to people who buy an Aston Martin or any other fancy car - they usually don't NEED such a high performance car, they just wanted one and had the money to buy it.

I think most ppl who came here to bash the OP are under the false pretext that just because the machine is expensive, the amount of 'professional' work done on this machine should also be 'expensive'.

For those ppl, haha, it's only a computer. Relax
