I never use the physical remote. I use the remote app on my phone. It doesn’t have volume controls. I use my TV remote for that.
Don’t the volume controls on your phone work? They do with my Apple TV 4K... 🤔

OR you could just do what every power user does... add the TV device control into your existing Logitech Harmony universal remote and customize any button you like.
Why not just buy a harmony remote. You can usually find the 6** series on sale for like $40 and they are fully customizable.

Fully agree, Logitech Harmony remote all the way.

Sure if you have only one TV and the AppleTV as a device even I may just try and use HDMI-CEC to use the TV Remote to control the AppleTV device as well. Despite me hating HDMI-CEC even more than the AppleTV remote.

But come on if you have one or two big screens with Dolby Vision, a switching AVR amplified with some nice Dolby Atmos compatible speakers and several inputs like satellite/cable TV box, ATV, UHD player, couple of games consoles and so on then surely you have a Logitech Harmony.

Super family-friendly, and activity-based which makes a lot more sense than those all in one remote, or having a whole bunch of remotes lying around.

Boosh!

This! I’ve got two harmony hubs in my home and the only time I’ve ever used the Apple TV remote was to use Siri to return me back to a specific point on a movie. Once Harmony have this, it’s goodbye ATV remotes!

Given the new iPad cursor support, it wouldn't surprise me if Apple would double down on the touchpad approach for Apple TV.

Fast forward and backward with Harmony are much slower on ATV though, as great as the rest of the solution is.

Surely they are the same speed as the ATV is still doing the work. But granted, it can be less precise than the ATV as IR seems slower to react than Bluetooth. Especially if one relies on line of sight, but then again with the Elite series of the Harmony it is easy to just get a repeater to the ATV in a closed cabinet.

Somehow on mine, and somebody mentioned it here earlier too, the ATV itself knows more than one speed but our Harmony only triggers the slowest one. Plus, on the ATV remote thingy you can swipe down during playback and move the playback needle around very fast. Not a deal breaker, but nice to have for sure.

On my Harmony I've got it so that repeatedly pressing the fast forward (or reverse) button will make it incrementally speed up or slow down again.

And yes, agreed that moving the 'needle down' is good and provides more precision. Never actually tried that on the Harmony...

Scrubbing is a problem with a button remote, whether it is a Logitech remote or likely the above Button Remote too. With the current software versions, fast forward and review do work but the speed maxes out at a relatively slow or at best moderate speed on button remotes. In order to get full speed scrubbing, you need to swipe on the Apple touch remote or an iPhone/iPad.

I know this because I prefer to use my Logitech Harmony remote over Apple's disaster of a remote. This mostly works, except if you want to get maximum scrubbing speed. BTW, it doesn't work properly with Apple's old button remote either.

There’s a jump forward/jump back functionality though, right? (Without the included Siri remote)? That’s the main thing I care about. Amazon doesn’t have a specific button but usually left or right does it like you’d expect.

I like the current Apple TV remote the way it is.
For me definitely no need to improve it anyhow. Works like a charm, easily the best remote I ever had.
A device like the one promoted here may be useful for impaired persons, maybe with bad eyes or handicapped motor skills, but I don't understand why anyone without such restrictions would prefer it over a device like the standard Siri remote which is in my opinion far more elegant and superior in every aspect, especially in daily handling...

The Appletv remote is the greatest ever. Simple, easy to operate, gets it done. I hate those legacy remotes with all the buttons that you can't see in the dark, and practically have to study just to find a function. It is nice that you can use a conventional remote with AppleTV, I guess, for those who don't like the easy to use one

Really?! We'll have to agree to disagree, then. Not only can you not see the Apple TV buttons in the dark, but you can hardly tell which end is up to begin with (BTW, the basic Comcast remote has light-up buttons). Brush your hand across it while reaching for a pillow on the couch, and then have fun scrambling to get it to stop fast forwarding and finding your place again. If the dog steps on it, all bets are off. It's slippery and so thin that it gets lost way too easily. This doesn't have to be a binary choice between an overly simplistic sliver of soap and a NASA control panel.

Agreed. I've actually just ordered a Harmony Elite remote which will arrive on Monday. But still without Siri, so I'll continue to have 2 remotes to hand. Apple probably don't allow a licence to integrate it.

Looks much better than the Siri remote,,

I always keep loosing mine due to the small size.

Good question. My guess is there is no direct button for it, instead you long press menu which gets you home, then pick the other app.

It could be just like Apple's 3rd gen. aluminum remote, you cant access the switcher either. Clever way though to force users to use Siri remote.

No one likes leaves a bloat of apps to close. Particularly with AppleTV as it leaves the last one open even after restart.

Best Buy and Walmart both carry the One for All Streaming remote for $24.99. Also controls a sound bar and TV.

I don’t know if it’s any good, I’ve never used one.

Thanks for the links to this remote! I found someone selling 2 on eBay used for $22.50! They both work great on the Apple TV. The only negative is that it only controls the volume on the TV and not when using AirPods.

Is there any trick to get this remote to work? I got it today and no a single key works. The pilot light does blink but it does nothing else. The AppleTV remote works just fine. I have a last gen AppleTV (4K)

Mine arrived yesterday and I didn’t have to do anything at all for it to work.
I turned on the ATV with the stock remote and then pressed the menu button on the Function remote and it worked on the very first press.
Literally there was zero setup for me.
