I’m still very curious about this rumored HomePod/Apple TV combo device. I mainly wonder what type of connectivity/IO it will have, along with other unique features. It seems like it may be a very supercharged version of both devices.

My pair of minis sound nice, but the WiFi chip is abysmal and recently they've had a bug that occasionally causes slightly out of sync stereo audio that can be fixed by pausing and restarting a song.

Sonos is expensive but their speakers are leaps and bounds ahead. I’ll take some Era 100s over a HomePod with a blurred curved display any day.

Exactly.

I cannot believe the engineers at Apple are not able to understand the fundamental failure of a screen in this location.

So you have a Speaker on a shelf, on a desk etc, and you would like to see information on it's screen.
Perhaps the time? Perhaps an answer to some question? Perhaps lyrics for a song that's playing.

So where would you want a screen to be?
1: On the side, so you can view the screen from where you are sitting?
2: On the top, facing the ceiling, so you cannot see anything unless you walk over to it, and look down onto the screen.

Please for the love of god, tell me, that at least someone at Apple has the intellect and perhaps bravery to stand up and explain this would be a dumb place for a screen in real world usage.

Sure, it will look fine in a store display when you are standing next to it, and also fine in a demo/presentation when you are standing/sitting right up next to it.

But in real homes with real people..... Nope.

Please Apple, stop and actually think before you build it.
Apple engineers usually are a pretty smart bunch, they don’t always focus on the same criteria as everyone else (DPI vs raw resolution, efficiency vs big numbers on spec sheets, etc) but this one is a very stupid moment for them.

It seems like something Microsoft would put out. I’m still unconvinced this is an actual screen that will be used for much besides a fancy Siri animation.

My theory is at this “HomePod with a display” is actually just going to end up being a new accessory for the OLED iPads.
Given that they’re OLED and have variable refresh rate, an always on standby mode is exactly the kind of upsell they would try to make for people to upgrade.

Now, an Apple TV HomePod that’s some sort of Atmos home theater set up from Apple? That sounds exciting.
But also makes absolutely no sense in their line-up.

A screen that doesn't do anything a screen should do. Innovation for the sake of added cost. Lean principles in my line of work have us constantly asking, "is this is value added for the customer?" Lean is only a thing at One Apple Park Way when it comes to RAM.

I would love a HomePod that will only respond to my voice when I say "Hey Siri". It's why I have it turned off. I don't need it going on at random times because it has to respond to everyone. This is something they should have had years ago.

HomePod was too little too soon.

Like, why make anything rely on Siri to the extent that HomePod does when Siri is anything but reliable?

Only a "GPT"-level AI Siri could make HomePod attractive.

And it must(!) have a feature to block out voices that don't belong to the owner or members in your Family.

Hopefully it releases soon, I need to switch some Echoes to HomePods. Alexa takes a long time to respond to commands now. Siri response is now immediate and it doesn't require the internet (for home automation)

Imagine some stranger yelling from outside: "SIRI unlock the front door".

SIRI on my iPhone only responds to my voice.

Just allow us to use HomePods or HomePod mini as surround speakers, we’ve been asking this for such a long time but Apple never seems to listen.
Exactly. And this should be possible with just a software update. They can already make two HomePods a stereo pair.

or none of the above. Siri works great for me, price is competitive for quality, I do not have any reliability problems whatsoever, and sound quality is fantastic. (way better than the cheaper Sonos, not as good as the expensive Sonos) I have two original HomePods, got updated to 17.2 (I wasn't expecting they would be updatable). 4 minis, and just bought 2 second generation HomePods refurbs - sorry haters, they are awesome!
I agree. Siri isn't the smartest when it comes to general info but for things I use an assistant for like making appts/reminders, texting people, setting alarms, listening to music and controlling HomeKit stuff she excels. I have Google Home/Hubs, Alexa Echos and several HomePods and for the things I listed above Siri does better than the others. Well except reminders. Alexa is the best as that. And HomeKit is definitely the best of the 3. Google Home has become a complete joke not to mention Assistant gets more stupid by the day.

I use two original HomePods still and leave Siri on mostly for my family. If it was up to me I would turn it off and use these as just speakers. Knock on wood I haven't had any hardware issues with these two.

I have seven HomePods - 5 Originals and 2 Minis.

The first one I purchased was when HomePod was released almost 6 years ago at the Stanford Apple Store, where the HomePod engineering/development team was there to answer questions. And then purchased the others over time.

In a word, they're superb, and use them everyday; especially for music. Excellent sound, zero hardware/software issues, and Siri works fine.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what future HomePod devices Apple comes up with.

I gave up using the HomePod a long time ago, when I discovered, that I had to create an extra German account, because Apple refused to let me listen to Swiss Radio stations with a Swiss account. Alexa does this for me now.

It should be working now, but after years of waiting i gave up. Do not add to many restrictions, because it might drive away your customers...

And the extra super display will not make me come back, because I would use it for Audio.

Combining a speaker and a screen may be an interesting product.

Adding a small round screen to the top of an existing device does not seem to be adding anything useful.

I don’t know anyone who cares if they can see a 2” version of the album artwork.

Is there any rumor about Apple working on some kind of surround system using a combination of HPs/HPminis? Thats what I'm interested in rather than a useless curved LCD display that I almost never look at
