We all know that the next generation of iPhone X will be coming (in up to three variants), but how will Apple retain a uniform naming convention now that the 'X' has been implemented to signify the next (current) generation iPhones?

In my opinion, iPhone and screen size is my choice. But that does offer some confusion between the LCD 6.1" display and the OLED 6.5" display.

iPhone 4.7
iPhone 6.1
iPhone OLED 5.7
iPhone OLED 6.5

iPhone Xs or 11

Apple will likely retain the numbering convention which encourages annual upgrades.

I wonder if Apple will do what they did with iPads (and what they have kind of done with Macs) and separate the line into “iPhone” and “iPhone Pro”. The 6.1” LCD model would just be “iPhone” and the “Pro” line would be the OLED models and would be differentiated by screen size. That would mirror very nicely what they’ve done with the iPad line:
  • iPhone <=> iPad
  • iPhone Pro 5.8” <=> iPad Pro 10.5”
  • iPhone Pro 6.5” <=> iPad Pro 12.9”
  • And you would still have the very confusingly named iPhone SE and iPad mini 4 clinging to life at the bottom of each lineup.

Whatever happens, I sincerely hope they whittle down the lineup a bit this year and get rid of the numbers. It has gotten out of hand with the current lineup.

Is the iPhone in your example the 6.1"?

The numerical naming of iPhones has gotta stop one day. Does anyone really think that some day there's going to be an iPhone 19? iPhone 29?

Personally I think that they would have looked into the 'Pro' naming before settling on 'X'. You are very correct though, that the product line is becoming very scattered.

As JPack mentioned (As I have shared similar thoughts in other threads), the numbering scheme is actually crucial to the iPhone. It also does encourage upgrades as that member stated, but it also ages the older model iPhones under the newest iPhones with the latest/highest number. The iPhone has always had the numbering system and it likely will continue onward until Apple devises a new plan later in the future. But for now, it makes complete sense and it shows the consumer the latest models from the oldest.

I Believe the iPhone “11” will be the next number used in line.
