The always-on display has made me really reconsider ever buying another Apple product. Each product has been worlds better than the previous version, except for the purchase of this years Series 5 ceramic.

My series 3 has virtually nothing wrong with it and lasts about twice as long on the same charge with 2 years of ownership and daily use. This series 5 is guaranteed dead by dinner time if I have used it since 6am and gone to the gym during that day.

My iPhone 11 Pro has a ultra wide angle lens. My iPhone XS Max had pretty much everything else I used daily that this new one has minus that lens I rarely use. I'm having a hard time understanding why I jumped to the newest gadget.

Having an iPhone 12 Pro, or whatever they'll call it, with an always on display just won't be enough to convince me to jump this time around now that I have seen how it works on the watch. I hope Apple has some new gadgets to convince those wondering the same. Has apple lost it's "why?" I think Simon Sinek would say yes.

Didn’t the teardowns reveal that both models have the exact same battery? I’m pretty sure it’s just typical Apple holding back on those software upgrades in order to sell the newer model.
Not holding back, it's more than a software upgrade. They can run the screen refresh rate on the 5 way lower than on the 4, because they built in different driver circuitry, even though the screen is the same basic technology. Of course, you might be able to get in there with a soldering iron and add in equivalent circuitry on your own, if you want to make your Series 4 have an always on display.

This will also be good for augmented reality glasses in the future. Longer time for Apple Eyeglasses :)
Except they won't be using screens, they'll be using tiny projectors aimed into your eyes ;)

Why did you upgrade this year? The rule of thumb is, if Apple discontinues previous year’s model, then don’t upgrade from that model to the next one. They can’t justify keeping both for sale with a $100 difference for the slight spec bump, neither should you.

I actually get more than 18hr batt life with AOD enabled on my AW5. I'm getting about a whole day and several hours.

I just hope they would have ironed out any possible battery impacts by then.

The battery hit on the iphone should be minimal. My guess is that this is more prominent on the Apple Watch because it had such a small battery to begin with, so any feature which uses extra power will have a greater impact.

I don’t need an always on display for my iPhone but I want complications on my lock screen like the Apple Watch. Why is that so hard for them to do?

Samsung Galaxy has AOD for about 5 years. All Android high end phones now do. The feature I really miss on iPhone. You can see your notifications, time, etc without turning the screen on. Apple as always late catching up

Which usually have technical reason, but whiners on forums always want to post trash like this. Apple is one of the very few companies which continue to bring optimizations even years after snd new features to old hardware. Very often users doesn’t understand the tech limit or the crippled experience Apple doesn’t want users to have.
Series 5 have a new display which can go down to 1hz.

But but but this is a useless gimmick Samsung just rushed to be first. When Apple do AOD on phones it will be perfection. It took Apple 5 attempts to get AOD in a watch but look how perfect it is with zero complaints of poor battery life.

I disabled my series 5 displays always on. It drained way too fast for me. I could only get about 24 hours out of it. Now that the display is off, I’m getting two days easily.

i am one of those people who just don’t trust batteries so no matter how much battery is left, I would never leave the house with a battery not being at 100%. Therefore I charge any device over night, no matter how long it may last. Same reason I always carry a Powerbank in my bag even though I rarely use it

you are aware no one forces you to upgrade every year and I doubt that’s who Apple is aiming for. I am sure they know that people hang onto their devices a lot longer now. Why do you think everything is so damn expensive now? They have to make up for it somehow. The Apple Watch Series 5 is a great purchase for people like me, coming from a Series 0

I owned both Apple Watch 4 and 5. And the battery life is much worse on Watch 5. I gave away my Watch 4 to my nephew and now I regret I did. Most people in this thread actually complain about Watch 5 battery life.

Apple implementation isn't good either. Apple Watch 5 AOD has no clickable regions. It's read-only. You have to make a tap on it to "wake up" the display in order to start interacting with it. Samsung AOD on the other hand had interactive widgets for about 5 years now.

I’ve been assured that Apple only releases features that are better than the competition so sorry but all your experiences must be invalid.

It will be just like my Nokia 6310 which also has an always on display 😂

This is great news and I hope it’s true. The always on display on my S5 is so useful and has only affect my battery life by 0.5 percent per hour. A great trade off

120HZ on the way...

All that is what an Apple Watch is for...android are still trying to catch up to the Apple Watch which will never happen

I've seen several comments about the issues with battery life and AW Series 5 with AOD enabled. I disabled AOD and also the environmental measures (decibel monitoring); the watch couldn't last more than 18 hours with both features enabled.

I had both S4 and S5 and the upgrade hasn't been worth it. My advice would be save your money and stay with the S4 until Apple releases a significant upgrade.

Apple's AOD is not ready for primetime and feels like a beta.

You know what the funny thing is?

The AOD just came to the Apple Watch this year, long after android smartwatches have sported said feature. Despite not having said feature for years, the Apple Watch has come to dominate the smartwatch space, and I don't think there is anyone who can objectively tell you with a straight face that wearOS is better than watchOS.

It's easy to say that Apple should have included a certain feature right from the start, but Apple's success shows that it is not that they are out of touch, but that their product managers knew how to prioritise the right things in the right order.

It's going to be no different here.

"You know what the funny thing is?" Apple used to own smartphone market. Now it's only at 16% market share. The trend is not great.

You can put that down to many low budget android devices. Individual sales? Apple is still as dominant as ever.

Yes, of course they are.
This is what Apple has become, see what Samsung does and a few years later just copy it.
Then during the announcements they act like this is the latest and greatest thing as if it hadn't been around for years before.

I thought Nokia was the first to do the always on display?
