Honestly, I think Beta 1 is pretty damn stable. Have had no major issues whatsoever, besides the occasional lag and glitches (expected).

Always have a bunch of non-developers install it on their everyday phones and then complain when things don't work. They don't seem to understand what 'beta' means or why Apple tells you NOT to install it on your primary device.

I really think this is a misaligned quote. I'm not a developer and have been installing iOS betas on my device as long as I can remember. I'm a huge Apple/tech fan and I look forward to playing around with the new features as soon as they come out. However, I also recognize the fact that this is a beta and things will inherently might not work because of that fact. So of course I'm not going to leave bad app reviews (which you can't do anymore anyway) or complain on the forums about something that doesn't work or isn't fully working like demo'd at WWDC.

But the fact that I'm not a developer so I shouldn't be able to install a Beta is ridiculous. I paid my $99 just like you did.

You people need to work on your reading comprehension. He's not saying non-developers who are in the development program shouldn't BE ALLOWED to move to iOS 8, he's merely saying people who ARE NOT in the developer program, or people who don't intend to use the beta to develop software for it SHOULD NOT (not SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO) move to iOS 8.

He's not saying you shouldn't have the option haha, just cautioning people regarding the beta.

I think it's you who needs to work on their reading comprehension (and perhaps alot more than that).

His quote was "Non developers shouldn't have betas installed period." I take that to mean that anyone who is not a developer should not install the beta on their device. Whether or not they "should not install" or "should not be allowed" to install is irrelevant, the end result would be that the non-developer would not have the beta on their device.

And in terms of it being a cautionary remark, I think it was anything but that. There are many developers on this forum who have the same thoughts that non-developers should not install the beta simply because they are not developers. However, I certainly agree with anyone who says that a non-developer should proceed with caution.

Hopefully, you are able to comprehend my stance now that I have (hopefully) cleared up any reading comprehension issues.

This is the problem, however not all non-developers act like this.

Is anyone actually using iOS 8 beta without their UDID?

I might know someone. ;)

Apple has fixed an issue with the activation servers so those using downloaded ipsw files without devices accounts will get a nice surprise when they next restart their device if they haven't backed up. ;)

Why not? If we pay our $99 we should be allowed to beta test with y'all big boys.

Exactly - just what annoys me, as previously mentioned in this forum, is people who aren't devs who download the betas illicitly and expect them to work flawlessly, the go and whine to Apple (who will obviously send them on their way) or leave bad reviews on apps when they inevitably crash, giving perfectly honest and hard-working devs a massive problem, as happened with the iOS 7 beta where Apple allowed anyone to download it from a 3rd party mirror and didn't require activation.

Anyone who needs to work for a living on these devices (including OS X) such as myself would never install beta or pre-release software, for obvious reasons of losing everything or bricking a $3k+ device.

Non Dev here. Installed iOS 8 I'm just complaining bugs as I see them.

Listen people, it doesn't matter if your a dev or not. It takes more than devs to find all of the bugs in betas. Keep in mind DEV's themselves hold betas tests for their apps so they need to install the latest iOS beta's their own non dev beta testers devices.

So for the ignorant people out there that constantly say that non devs shouldn't have beta os's installed period. Use your brain. If all of the dev are testing for bugs. Who is gonna develop the software?

And for all you ignorant non dev's report bugs. Don't cry about them. Theres only one way to get them fixed. REPORT!

Non developer who paid the $99. I absolutely love to screw around with new software of any kind. I'll spend hours and hours fiddling with every option and feature and I consider myself a great beta tester.

I downloaded 8 on my mini first and after everything was downloaded it worked with very few problems.... and nothing major.

After a few days I installed on my 5s and restored from my icloud backup as I've done with every single upgrade in the past. Since iphone 2 I've never done a clean install.

Needless to say, my phone was very very (very) buggy. I messed around with it ALL day, rebooted the phone a hundred times and finally decided to start over and do a clean install. I had already downloaded all photos from iCloud backup and then switched on the icloud album so they all uploaded there so I decided to just do it.

I feel like I have a brand new phone. It's super fast and, well, clean. The only system issue has been that settings issue and a few apps that have quirks... But all work.

But if you payed the $99, wouldn't you be considered a "developer"?

No he's considered a non developer with a developer account. Fyi, developers develop software not bugs. If anyone wants to pay to be a beta tester they should be able to. Just as long as they follow the terms just like the developers.

I think Beta 1 is pretty stable and I haven't really had any issues with it; still it's installed on my backup phone.

I'm a registered developer and using it on my everyday phone. No major problems so far for me.

Same here. But this time around since I am beta testing it on my main day to day to use of the phone, i have not installed all my apps. I only installed LinkedIn which is what I daily use. I have done a couple bug reports.

With Betas, I tend to only use one frequently used app to see how it performs and so far LinkedIn runs well and my frequent usage of the phone, surprisingly does well (with a few hiccups with the lock screen not coming up after first button press, but that is to be expected)

Not major problems for me, something I can live with while beta testing iOS8.

Seriously two lessons from this thread... If you're not a developer or don't know how to solve issues that crop up, don't install beta software onto your phone. Also, please don't install this on your daily device and then complain about how you can't open certain apps or whatever... It's the first release of beta software incorporating very new ideas for Apple, it's bound to be rough for the first few betas.

Folks don't be fooled by the "no issues here" comments. They may not be using any apps, or they may be using the 500 apps that you don't. What is a deal breaker for some folks others couldn't care less about. I've got some apps that I don't want to live without and they may not work for someone else who feels it's not an issue.

Very good advice. This very reason is why Apple says to not use your daily use devices.

So many apps etc is also a reason why they do this. THe main one is the developer preview but the other is so that developers act as a wider beta test group to cover a few more of the zillions of combinations that may exist in the wild

As for this great debate my feeling is this. If you are not a developer gunning to have something out or updated the moment iOS 8 is live then you have no reason to be using the betas. You are impatient period. But if you can't wait that badly do it right. Pay for your own account, source the files from Apple and at least participate in sending bug reports. Nothing is more annoying than someone that torrents and whines about bugs, apps not working etc. Apple doesn't read these sites so you aren't helping anything by such behavior

Pointing out that a bug exists does not equal complaining. I have seen almost no complain on here in the wake of the beta 1 release. Similarly, discussing bugs is not complaining and it certainly doesn't hurt you. Trying to find workarounds in the time being is not complaining.

IMO the people who only post "it's a beta" or "you don't know what a beta is" are the ones that aught to be banned, not the other way around.

How about actually reporting them to Apple rather than going on a 3rd party forum and complaining about them where no one will ever see it and correct it.

Actual developers deal with it and report it. It's the people that just want to play with the new tech that goto forums like this and complain.

Seems you didn't grasp my post in the slightest, no wonder this is so much drivel in here.

Running iOS8b on an iP5 and so far is quite stable. There are minor glitches (Slingbox app con not connect, MyLifeNow does not show the numeric keys so login is not possible, HBOGo crashes...) but the many of new features are long awaited.

Developer, non-developer opines aside (yawn) those with access please join me in trying to help Apple get this thing as ready for prime time as possible.

I agree with you. Being a non-developer does NOT mean:
1. We complain (torrent, whine, etc) about bugs
2. We don't report any of them
3. We don't pay the proper fee to Apple

It's somewhat insulting to read these posts but I guess we all know that will happen sooner or later on here.

I'm running 8 on my daily driver 5s and it works fine. There's been a few UI bugs and the settings app crashes constantly (but works after a reopen), few bugs in Messages (but nothing showstopping to me) but other than that it's been very stable. Much more stable than the iOS 7b1.

Personally, I always give up my jailbreak for beats for 2 main reasons:

1. I don't healvily rely on a jailbreak. Sure, I enjoy the UI tweaks but I don't have any major tweaks that I rely on daily.

2. I paid $99 to become an Apple Dev. Because I don't write apps or anything, I only use my Dev account for the betas. Always running latest beta is simply getting my money's worth.

I'm a non-developer but I paid the $99 to get my account just like any other dev. I beta test firmware, I report bugs that I find, I post on this forum to see if others have similar bugs, I read this forum to see if I can help and learn from others, I enjoy checking out all of the new features, and I show off the new beats to my friends a little. There is nothing illegal, immoral, or shady in any way about what I do. I'm sure that there are tons of other people that do exactly what I do with my dev account. Nobody should have any problem with the way that I use my dev account but if anyone does, please feel free to comment on this post. I would love to hear what you can come up with :p
