Wow, I didn't realize that.

Seems kinda ridiculous to replace all of that for the battery... But perhaps this is only temporary? (i.e. perhaps they are rolling out special tools / etc to help replace batteries, and this is only until then?)

Crazy, anyway.

I very much hope so. What's the point of all this "future proofing" if the battery won't last as long as the parts?

I just really hope Applecare covers the battery as well, because 99% of computer warranties don't - you usually need a separate one for the battery.

Future proofing is stupid and a waste of energy.

Applecare has always covered batteries that don't meet Apple's performance standards.

So you'd essentially get a new chassis and battery for $200? That's really not all that bad. I guess that means that if you ever need a new keyboard or trackpad, you'll also end up getting a new battery with it.

It does seem like bad engineering to make it so that the battery cannot be removed even with some kind of solvent. They probably should have just used a weaker adhesive or held it in via friction. Works fine for the iPhones.

It sounds like a bit of a plus to me. You see all these old Macbook pros advertised for sale with obviously stained keyboards, trackpads, and wristrests (unless owned by OCD fanboys). ISTM that provided we budget to replace the battery in three years or so, we end up with not only a shiny new battery (so I don't really have to worry about protecting the battery status for the next three years), but also we get a nice shiny new top case, keyboard and trackpad. It'll look mostly like a new laptop. Great deal.
