How long before we see a 512GB version of the GSkill or another brand with similar performance? Q3 2009?

Most likely Q2, I believe Toshiba said they would come out with 512GB by summer.

I am sure they can double the storage if they switch to 3.5" but I just think the price won't be justified.

My TITAN 256GB replacement drive arrived today and SUCCESS. :)
After experiencing the same format problems and applications hanging under Windows XP Pro having read post of folks successfully utilizing the TITAN 256GB, I knew something else had to be going on.
Sure enough it turned out to be the Newer Technologies (both original and second gen) USB 2 Universal drive adapter. For some reason when connecting the SSD via this device it will not format properly. So after installing the drive internally in my MBP everything worked like a charm. The OS X install program did hand once and I am not sure what may have caused that. Also do not believe the estimated time remaining during a Migration Assistant session. Other than that no problems so far. VMs are not as fast as expected but the processor may be playing catch-up with the SSD?

Who can post impressions about Bootcamp with SSD; performance and speed.

Thx

Benchmarks doesn't mean anything right now for jmircon based SSD. They almost never prove that SSD doesn't stutter and also many of the benchmarks doesn't talk about steady solid state where many SSDs does suffer some kind of slowdown after the drive has been filled. Intel has been known to show steady solid state since Intel does a full drive write test before shipping to users.

This drive does not begin to "rival" the Intel drive in any situations even if it is three times faster than Intel in both read/write because there has been many reports of stuttering for Titans. So it does not matter how much speed it has, if it does not fix the stuttering issue, it does not rival the drives like Intel. However in most cases for regular casual user, it is a better deal for the bucks since the user does not do much on the computer to notice the stutter and unfortunately most of the time, the users shouldn't spend the extra cost for the SSD if they don't use the PC that way.

The problem I think is that these devices behave so differently it's difficult to actually assess their performance. I posted in another thread on this forum the concept of steady state and people who had either already purchased or were otherwise interested seemed to have never even heard of the concept.

It makes it very difficult to judge how these devices really perform in real life. I hear from these folks how in real life they just fly (and that is more important than any benchmark) and yet others report stuttering, which would drive me insane.

I would so like to plunk down money on one of these things, but 80gb intel is not enough space, the 160 is too expensive, and the g.skill just seems to be too much of a wild card. It's driving me insane, as I'm getting my new octocore mac pro today.

There may be an issue with the “Put the hard disks to sleep when possible” setting. After leaving for a few hours I found the MBP asleep and it would not recover (power off required)…still testing.

Also Bootcamp with XP Pro boots much faster BUT completing of the whole boot process (services started etc) takes almost the same time as with a fast HD.

Hmmm interesting - I have not had this issue. I have had my computer in and out of sleep a few times a day for the past few days... and have not seen this issue.

@pprior
If you do really consider getting the Intel SSD X25-M series keep in mind that bootcamp does not work on those. I've read a few people saying that the process hangs and is not able to finish installing.

The X25-E I have no idea, haven't really read anything in regards to MB/MBP and Bootcamp, probably because the drive is so small.

@shortarc
I have the Put hard disks to sleep when possible and haven't had any issues waking up my MBP from sleep mode. That does sound rather strange I will say.

Also regarding XP, it might be best to do some tweaks to the services/registry. But the tweaks itself would help an SSD or a conventional HHD.

Went into Energy Saver Prefs and unchecked "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" and the problem went away. With it checked, after 40min or so, I would hit the space bar, the superdrive would come on but the screen would remain dark. Only a hard poweroff will do.
Very strange.

spaceballl,
I just noticed your post on the TITAN 256GB. GREAT!
You seem to be able to do what I could not. My Newer Tech USB2 Drive Adapter would not allow my to format the SSD properly.
Also the power-up from sleep seems to be causing some issues in general.
I will try and reset the SMC and see if that helps.

I am gonna wait for the OCZ Vertex that claims to have 64MB of cache on the controller which may increase the spread of write performance, this might make the difference in price compared to Titan/Apex worth it.

Yes, Toshiba and Micron will come out with very very fast 512GB models and these will be premium priced for a while (a bit like the Intels). In fact, they will blow away the performance of the Intels. Some preliminary numbers I have seen indicate somewhere around 270MB/s read and 220MB.sec writes.:D
