I did a bit more research and found this video on creating a boot disc for Leopard:

No idea if it’s working but currently it’s restoring the external drive I have from the Leopard download file I have. Will see if I get a bit more progress.

Can I do any damage by booting off the USB drive? I assume not as I’m not really doing anything to the HDD in the Mac. I assume if I get the installer working off the drive, then I’ve pretty much done it and can just install the OS on the HDD in the machine?

Ooooh, is this a good sign? I’ll close it all down tonight and have another go tomorrow, but fingers crossed I have what I need to install Leopard.

Good stuff, Ed. Think that should work.
Just a small note, and the majority of people here would agree with me, Snow Leopard (10.6) is a better OS than 10.5. Once you've installed 10.5, it would be very easy to update to 10.6, without losing any of the functionality of 10.5. The best part of 10.6 is that some developers are still releasing web browser support for it.

And I assume I can use Time Machine as a way to roll everything back if I find it doesn’t play nice with Logic or my audio interface?

I think it would work, just wanted to start on 10.5 to be safe.

Yes I think so. Another safe choice is to get an app like SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner, using that you can make a perfect clone backup of your 10.5 install + files, onto a firewire or USB drive.

Well this is disappointing…

I’m sure it’s me doing something wrong. Hopefully just keep plugging away to fix it.

I think it’s because I have emulated the DVD on the USB drive but then not sure what to do next. If I try and boot from the USB I get that error. If I try and install the DVD, it asks to reboot the computer but doesn’t give me an option to install on a different drive. Just reboots back to the screen I was on before.

Currently trying to create a bootable drive using Balena Etcher. If that doesn’t work I’ve downloaded a copy of Snow Leopard (10.6) and will try that. Maybe it doesn’t play nice with the copy of 10.5 I have?

Good luck.
Again, if you need me to make you a 10.6 install USB, I can do so. Keep in mind the 2008 Mac Pro might not like 10.5, that might be too old (not entirely sure). You may need something like 10.5.3.

By shear luck I’ve managed to get here. Exciting:

It won’t let me install the OS on the main HDD. So I’ve started installing on the external drive on a partition.

I think I missed the option to format the drive, so I’ll have a go at that in the morning.

That’s very kind. I was very close to having to pull the pin and ask for help, but I think I’ve actually had some progress finally using the 10.6 install.

Ok. Install on ext drive worked. Will have a go at doing it on the actual hard drive in the morning.

Wish I hadn’t seen 10.13 because it’s a serious step back in the beauty of the OS, but as long as it works for Logic, that’s the important thing.

Success! Jeez that must have been painful for some of you to watch ;)

Now to see if I can get Logic installed.

Latest update. It’s all setup and working!

Logic installed without any issues and I updated to 7.2.3 and it’s all loaded and I’ve spend the past few nights setting up the configuration and auto load. It worked immediately with the midi controller but the software for this is part of the Logic bundle which is good.

I got a new audio interface last night but have to organise a power supply for it (easy) and I have a FireWire cable on order, so at this stage I’m waiting on hardware to finish up everything (including a load of patch cables).

I’m also hoping to use the FireWire cable to try and bring over my audio HD from the G4, will update on that when the time comes.

Also have to repair my Supernova II as the DAC has failed in it. But that will get on the soldering bench this evening.

Then the plan is sit down with my 8 year old daughter and play around with it all. If she really enjoys it I’ll weight up the option of upgrading to Logic Pro X and OS 10.12 if the machine can handle it.

Supernova II DAC is repaired. My goodness that is the smallest component I’ve ever soldered. 2 soldering irons to remove the old one and careful soldering to place the new one and get it on the board.

All went fine and it’s singing once again.
