Right then - this is becoming more of a project 😀 are there any restrictions on what kind of SSD, any specs I should avoid? I see there are 250Gb ones around for £30ish, I'm inclined to buy a brand I recognise (Samsung, Kingston, Crucial etc) but there are obviously cheaper ones out there...
When I upgraded mine I used a Crucial SSD. HERE's the link which also shows precisely where I positioned it piggy-backed onto the optical drive, which ensures there's no interference with the fan.

Unless you've recently done so, once inside the iMac I would also highly recommend that you remove the heat-sink, clean and re-apply thermal paste to the CPU.

On refitment also re-apply paste to both ends of the heatsink prior to reinstallation of the bottom housing.
There's also a useful link HERE, which details a 2mm thermal pad added to aid heat dissipation from the GPU.

After the SSD upgrade, I didn't notice a major change in boot time, although there was significant improvement in opening applications, giving a more slick feel to the iMac's operation in general. Well worth the efforts!

So... My airport extreme card arrived, I've fitted it, the Mac boots and recognises the card and takes me to network configuration, it can see my home network, says it needs WPA, I put in the correct password, and it just fails to connect... Any ideas? I can do screenshots if that would help...?

So here it is - now with 2Gb of RAM, WiFi and fully functioning Garageband... And in a random drawer I came across the old external drive I used for time machine backups so that's running now...
Can't thank you all enough for just talking through this with me - I've made so much progress with it in just the last week and I'm ready to make music again 😀😀
