They are allowing developers to add their own datatypes to copy and paste, so this doesn't seem too far from that. I'm guessing it would be possible.I'm wondering if Spotlight on iPhone/iPod works the same way as it does in Mac OS, where application developers can provide their custom importers allowing Spotlight to index third party application data.
Would be neat for people using data intensive third party apps.
Here's a little detail on how Spotlight on the Mac works: the operating system knows whenever a file is created or modified (because the OS has a role in doing that work) so Apple created a system that notifies other programs when this happens.
The Spotlight process picks up these notifications and locates an appropriate "Spotlight Importer" to process the file and tell Spotlight what metadata to index for that file. Spotlight comes with dozens of these importers, but developers can create their own to provide metadata for custom file types.
Spotlight takes all this data, and maintains a giant index of everything on the system. So when you type a search term, the lookup is very fast. If the iPhone works like this, it will be able to keep the entire device index up to date with very little impact on the device's performance/battery life, and the searches should also be fast, which seems to square with the reports I've been hearing.
1) Can Spotlight perform a KEYWORD search within the BODY of an Email Message? Everything I've seen points to only searching Email Headers. I am hoping that Spotlight searches the ENTIRE Email message, including the message body. Hopefully there's not a major performance hit for indexing all message bodies.
2) Can Spotlight search the iPhone's Call Log using a phone number? Say I search for 123-456-7890, will it find it in the Call Log so I can make a note of the call durations for client billing/expense reporting purposes?
Still no To Do sync??? Come on...
So this summer I'll be able to connect medical devices to my iPhone, play games with other iPhones, copy and paste over and over again, but I can't sync To Dos. Hmmm....

it's actually "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog".![]()
As far as I can tell, Spotlight only searches email headers, both on the home screen and inside Mail.
Searching for phone numbers doesn't find anything at all.
I think the point that is greatly looked over or pushed to the side is that Apple is new to the smartphone and smartphone OS game (And yet they are steadily making strides of improvements as well as innovating on top of what has already been ahead of allot if not most smartphone makers times). Thus far they have done an awesome job.I think once they get a couple more years under their belt , they will be the dominant factor within the smartphone market (Over taking Nokia). It's just like the mac, as the years progress, the machines get allot better.
